Medical Marijuana

I’ve never been in a legal dispensary, but for those who live in states offering medical marijuana:

Are all strains the same price? Are there “top shelf” strains that cost more than run of the mill strains?

I read that the average price of a gram is close to $10. Is there bulk rates for larger quantities such as a full ounce?

Thanks!

Im in Oklahoma. The dispensary I go to has $99/oz-$199/oz

What examples would be low end strains as opposed to top tier strains?

They are they same strain in some instances. It’s more about the quality of the grow. For instance I bought a $99oz of purple Trainwreck that had 51 seed in last week. Since it had been pollenated the weed wasn’t super great, good but not great. I bought the same strain for $175 at the same dispensary that had 0 seeds in it that was great, killer great.

Oh, that makes sense for sure. I hadn’t thought much about quality from a dispensary since I grow mine all to the same standards which I hope would be top shelf. I am surprised to hear they sold some weed that had seeds in it. Very interesting, and that reminds me of college days when sticks, stems and seeds were the norm. Only until I began cultivating my own did I realize the difference in quality.

But here is a counter-point to the seeds: Buying seeds from ILGM or similar is expensive, If you buy weed with seeds, those seeds can be used for your own grow albeit they are mixed male and female. Still makes an interesting point in that you get plenty of seeds plus the weed to boot.

Oh yeah. It’s common practice for dispensaries to buy lower quality just to have an economic alternative. Before it was legal here I was buying 1/4lb of shake from dispensaries in CO for $200. I think it’s really a cost saving measure. The avg lb cost $2300 here, we sell our for $1600 but only to dispensaries that will pass those Savings on to the customer. We don’t sell to dispensaries with extreme markups. We also don’t sell it with seeds either that’s to keep for personal. I go buy $99 now and then because I look at it as buying seeds for $2 a piece and I get a fee oz lol

Once I realized how the seeds would play out to your financial advantage, I realized this could be a big plus $ if you were looking for seeds to cultivate. Some folks claim to be able to examine mixed bag seeds and determine the female seeds upfront based on the crown shape of the seed. Since I am growing personal use only, I simply buy feminized seeds and don’t really look much at the volume aspect of things. But this does seem like a good deal with $2 seeds and free weed!

And those seeds inherit the ability to produce seeds when not wanted. Something else to factor in is a trait leaning towards hermaphrodite: not a good thing.

I live in California and have visited a couple of dispensaries out of curiosity and been given samples of product out of those same ones. Not impressed, not impressed with the top tier stuff either. The poor consumer doesn’t have a clue what GOOD cannabis is. (But we do)

I’m glad you mentioned “good stuff” that we grow since I have never been to a dispensary nor sampled anything from one. I feel we have a stigma attached since the word “home grown” is typically said in a disparaging sort of connotation. I feel like you, that our weed is top shelf altho I have basically nothing to compare it with from a dispensary. I do know that in college (25 years back), that I could smoke a whole joint and be pretty much ok. If I smoked a similar sized joint of what I grow now, I believe I’d be in bed til the next morning. Two hits usually does the trick with my own weed.

For sure we put the time, effort and care into our own cultivation. Just take a look at the Blue Dream I will be harvesting next. I feel disrespected when some of these local yokels have the nerve to call my weed (or anybody else on our level) ditch bank weed that isn’t worth much. How wrong they are. I’d put my or your weed up against any they can choose……

That dream is dreamy…

Also something to consider… the bag u bought was pollinated by ‘something’. No way to know wtf ur growing with those seeds. Yea u know half the genetics… but if the other half is poo… u get to play find the diamond in the shake bag

….which is a gamble at best.

True. I know this particular dispensary only buys indoor grown because we’ve dealt with them and they won’t take anything outdoor even if it’s greenhouse…diamond in the poo lol…lil man the Wayans movie just popped in my head when he swallows that big diamond and can’t poop so they give him laxitive.

Very nice, @MT3. Most places here have 3 tiers. The top shelf goes for about $300/ounce, or as much as $60/eighth (redonkulous). There’s usually stuff on sale, but I agree, I’ve seen the same strain on all three tiers. Just depends on how it tests, cannabinoid-wise. Because of the (mostly) uneducated market here, they just put the stuff with the highest THC on the highest tier, and on down. I’ve got some 18-19% THC (bottom or middle tier, typically), but with absolute fire terpenes, so it’s better medicine than a lot of the top shelf stuff, for me anyway. A lot of it has to do with how it’s packaged, too. From what I’ve seen, a lot of places bag/jar up their nice buds in 1/4s and 1/8s for the visual appeal, then put the so/so buds in grams or sell it in bulk and let the dispensary use their own packaging, then use the popcorn and shake for prerolls and whatnot. Not everywhere, because I’ve seen some nice grams, but it sure seems that way for the most part.

I’d love to go into a dispensary simply to window shop. I don’t have a medical card, but then again, I wouldn’t really need to buy anything. If I made it to New England (I live in a mid-Atlantic state), I could look around in a totally legal state and see what all the fuss is about. Maybe we are all closer to federal legislation than we think. Or at least I hope.

Missouri started medical back in 2018, but I have never purchased any. Started growing it myself and never looked back.
Btw, punctuation would make your post so much easier to read.
