Lights and HEAT

@dbrn32 asked all the right questions. The Support Ticket is important and will help solve any issues.

How are you measuring ph? Because being precise on the input ph is very beneficial to the growing plant and having a poor handle on it can affect the plant like this.

Ok. I appreciate the help. I will be home tonight and fill out the info.

I use a meter which has me at 6.5-7.0. I use filtered well water from the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s very consistent over the years I have been here.

Can you fill out the Support Ticket?

Soil? Media? What nutes etc.

I agree with thcinkc I grow open tent adjust your thermostat down and properly vent I grow in a 5x5 tent with a 1000 watt hps setup.using a 600 cfm can and exaust into the attic I use an air cooled hood.that being said, my temp average 73 to 75 during the say and may drop as much as 10 degrees while the light is off. I grow open tent so if and when the temp would go above that I would crack a window.with the 600 cfm fan pumping thru that hood Ican actually lay my hamd on top of my hood and is barely warm

  • What strain, Seed bank, or bag seed
    White Widow seeds
  • Method: Soil w/salt, Organic soil, Hydroponics, Aquaponics, KNF
    Fox Farms Ocean
  • Vessels: Pots, Grow beds, Buckets, Troths
Started in plastic pots, transplanted 1 week ago to 5 gal bags
  • PH of Water, Solution, runoff (if Applicable)
PH with meter is 6.5-7 (never over 7)
  • PPM/TDS or EC of nutrient solution if applicable
Currently on Bergman’s plant food “Growtime Fertilizer” week three. I plan to use Bergman’s throughout
  • Indoor or Outdoor
Growing indoors in a 32”x32”x60” tent
  • Light system
Viparspectra 300 watt burple light 20” above top of plants
  • Temps; Day, Night
78 day and 65 night (I run two cfl lamps in the background to keep the heat up to 65 at night)
  • Humidity; Day, Night
    Between 30% to 50%
  • Ventilation system; Yes, No, Size
Exhaust system with inline 220cfm into carbon filter outside the tent. Air entry through open duct at top of tent
I also have a clip on fan blowing between the light and the plants
  • AC, Humidifier, De-humidifier,
    None
  • Co2; Yes, No
    No supplemental

Note: I have a HPS 600w light that is 36” wide and will barely hang inside the tent diagonally. Should I go all the way the the burple lights or try to get the HPS light in and running? Without venting it, it raised the temps in the tent 50 degrees. I have a fan that I can duct through the light and exhaust in the room outside the tent to cool it. However, I would have to reduce the tent venting to 4” rather than the existing 6” because of a shortage of exhaust ports in the tent. I have 3 6” and 1 4” port.

@dbrn32 I’m still muddling along. You were right about the apparent nutrient burn, as it has not gotten any worse and was only on the one plant that I fed. My lighting is still a big question for me. In the mean time, I added a 50W/3300 lumen light to the side of the plants to help the areas that are shadowed by the leaves above, blocking the overhead light. My plants are now about 12” from the 300W Viparspectra light with no apparent damage. I would welcome comments.

Well a 600 watt hps is awfully big for your space, and your blurple is just a little small. You’re not going to be able to make it 50 degrees over ambient either way. So I’m not really sure where that leaves you?

I have been experimenting with everything to this point. I have a 440 cfm fan that I can run through the HPS light to cool it. Do you think I could get the temps down into an acceptible range? Ambient temp in the basement is 63 this time of year.

Probably. It’s still extremely high light levels for that size space.

@Mrbudley1213, My current budget (and inventory) is the Viparspectra 300w LED (149w at wall) and the 600w HID. With my 32”x32”x60” tent, I am thinking to try what you have done. The plants look good at this point, however, they are small, probably attributed to the limited light source. Dbrn32 feels the 600w is extreme. I agree with him. However, it still sounds challenging. I don’t have the funds to buy a larger tent or a smaller HID light at this time. If I don’t burn my plants, and I keep up with water and nutes, they might grow really well.

Another thought: When growing grapes and the sun is too strong, they reduce the intensity with the use of woven netting. Maybe raid the wife’s scarf collection

Id like to follow and see how it turns out.like I said I’m running a 1000 watt hps in a 5 x 5 tent with an air cooled hood and a 600 cfm can for exhaust and my girls are loving life

I’m going to pick up some additional ducting tomorrow. What I’m going to initially set up is my 440 cfm fan outside blowing into lower 6” ducting up to the light. Then exit the light and 90 degree up through the top 6” vent.

I will have to modify my tent venting. Depending on the temperature (closed tent or open). If I can keep the tent closed, I’m going to run in throught the 4” vent and out through the 6” vent drawn by my 220 cfm inline fan.

I will be documenting results. Here’s what they look like today. These are White Widow. They are deciding to flower when they are ready.

@mrbudley1213 Here’s what it looks like: 440CFM into the 600w light and down the other side. The temps are staying low. I can touch the glass and its not warm to the touch. (I double checked to make sure the bulb was 600w) I am seeing some spaghetti on the buds. It’s been going on for about 2 days. So, I used the flowering bulb and put the other away until next time.

My issue is that I couldn’t vent above in the 6” like I wanted to. The hood was in the way. So, I vented in on lower left and out on lower right. It leaves a 4” opening in the back (against the wall) and a 6” opening directly above the light. So, I abandoned the tent venting temporariy. I opened the top up and opened the top of the tent door. I’ll need somebody to chime in on how to rectify the tent air. With the tent door open, I have successfully stunk up the whole house. I don’t mind, but you know who does…

Are you using a carbon filter bud

I was, but I removed it to make space to cool the light. If I draw out through the 6” and run a 4” hose to the floor of the tent, it will drag air through the tent to the 6” exit.
Or, if I step down 6” to 4” and draw out of the 4” opening and run a 6” tube to the floor from the 6” opening, will that get more air into the tent ?

I’m over thinking everything. Gees…

@Mrbudley1213 @dbrn32 I have installed the 600w light in my tent. I vented the light with a 440 cfm fan (push) and then vented the tent with a 220 cfm fan (pull) with a vent tube in the back of the tent. As the tent fan creates vacuum, it draws fresh air from the room into the tent at the plant level. The exhaust is at the top (hottest) level of the tent.

My temperature is about 78-81 when running at night (I just went to 12-12) and the plants have grown over an inch since yesterday. I don’t notice anything negative (leaves look the same). Talk about perky plants ! From the LED to this…wow.

Sounds like your doing good what type of hood are you using? I’m running a xxl air cooled hood with 1000 watt hps in my 5x5 with a 600 cfm fan blowing in and exhausted into the attic it’s a warm winter here and my average temp runs between 73 and 75 while light is on and drops about 8 degrees when its off.my ladies love it.I have a couple blu God buds going and also a couple afgani kush.and one lonely wedding cake.iv learned alot here bud, this forum def rocks as the people here are very helpful.take it all in and happy growing my friend
