Light Diffuser thru the Photone app

Well, i cannot believe it but the light diffuser that you can purchase thru the Photone app finally made it. I haven’t run the courses with it yet but, i will be. I have a regular Quantum Par Meter also, that i will be comparing it with.
But, if anyone was wondering about this after the update thru the Photone app. It will make it to you. For 20 bucs what the heck, i said, “lets see”…

So far i tested the sun with the diffuser and without the diffuser. To see how much the diffuser makes a difference.

With the diffuser

Without the diffuser

I am going to compare my meter with the app next.

Here we go with the meter readings.

I’d say the Photone app matches up pretty damn good. Its worth the investment for their diffuser they sell.

That’s some good info. What type of phone are you using I read somewhere that Android didn’t need the defuser but Apple did not sure if that is correct or not

I read the difference now since the update to the app that its more accurate for Android phones with the diffuser. There was a recent update to the app that changed the temperance and its more accurate now. You see it matches up with my Quantum Par Meter so, your in the ballgame with the Photone app and diffuser without having to spend alot of money for a regular meter. This should help alot of folks that stress over the app and its precisness. Its a clear sunny day here. Not a cloud in the sky and i am reading proper amounts of PPFDs from the sun on a clear day. 2000 PPFD is what it is that reaches the Earth.
@JPhoenixX

EDIT: The Photone app is set to Sunlight mode for this test.
The Photone app is about 600-800 PPFD off lesser than what it is, without the diffuser on an Android phone.
If your phone reads 1400 PPFD without the diffuser its really 2000 with it.
@OGIncognito was it you who i promised i would post my findings for?

They told us not to talk to you about it

I’m thinking it has to be a percentage thing that it’s off and not just a straight 400 points off. Otherwise I would have to set the app at 0 to get 400 ppfd?

I had wondered how accurate a free app could be. After seeing it compared to an actual meter I’m sold. That little diffuser is now on my list of stuff I need to get.
Thank you for taking the time to test it

Mixed reviews in comparison with other light measuring devices. I don’t use it so I’m not going to take a strong stance for or against. I’ll just trust that you all share your experiences honestly, whatever they may be.

The proof is in the pictures i posted above. Unadulterated from photoshopping. The Photone app is pretty accurate after this latest update for it and with the light diffuser it matches up with my actual par meter i have. I don’t think thats coincidence. It was a clear day without a cloud in the sky and they both read 2000 PPFD exactly what its supposed to be.
@JPhoenixX i am sold also. I get the same readings with the Photone app w/ diffuser as my Quantum Par Meter does. I don’t think thats coincidence either.

In this video he shows how using the correct paper for the diffuser will make the Photone app match up to his separate Par Meter. Same thing the plastic diffuser, that you buy through the app does.

Again, thank you for the info.
I was using the app as a ball park and hoping for consistency more than anything. If I was running a big commercial grow I would want 100% accuracy for everything. I’m just growing for the wife and I so good enough is good enough in my book. Knowing I can put a piece of paper over the phone and be really close to a meter that costs hundreds works for me

Cool to see that they updated!

I’ve tried Photone on a few devices vs a meter and eventually just stopped recommending it. Every phone I’ve tried it on showed something different even with the paid led setting.

Exciting to see an improvement in accuracy! Nice share :sunglasses:

Yeah, the update with the diffuser corrects alot of those imbalances between devices ill bet. I am getting much better par readings with it on my phone now. My last grow suffered during the onset of flower due to the Photone app and the different readings i was getting.

No problem, i am glad i could save you some money. I think you will be good with the app and the diffuser or 22 grain typing paper.
