Let's talk DIY lights

Mouser com has 12 of them

If you have wiring and connectors to get them together should be good.

Possibly some small difference in output current. You can get a b dimming model. There’s also other places to get them as @Budbrother pointed out.

Being a newbie here first I want to thank you for this thread. I am sure I will need to read through the entire thread someday but there are already a lot of replies here. Anyway thanks for the information on my journal grow as well. Because of your comments I think I am even going to hold off on buying another 1500 watt light in my tent. I think I will have enough light as it is and this is my first grow. Who knows how I will do and if I want to do another.

This thread will be one I will read through. Thanks again for starting this.

I have a question for you. It appears you have a 4 by 4 tent. You are using a 4 panel unit all mounted together. I understand it s custom lighting system so please bear with me. I am on my first grow so I am looking at ideas for future grows so I am thinking ahead. By the way that looks like a nice bit of work good job.

So the questions are how do you like the flat fixture? I can see pluses and minuses in using it. So far I am just poking the tires on this. Also if you don’t mind answering a couple of others. I have the same size tent. Is 4 plants about the max? How many grows have you used the tent in and how has it held up? Thanks in advance.

Glad you find it useful! If you see something you like and want to give it a try let me know.

I was interested in possibly making some improvements provided I like what I have got so far. I like LED’s thus far and the heat they generate make my tent really get warm. Currently the units I have are keeping the tent at about 83 degrees and I hit about 70% humidity and think that is in the right range. I have two lights if you remember both I got from Amazon. I am going to finish this grow out with these even if I am growing 4 plants. I don’t know if they are going to be enough for this first but I will take any amount of weed on my first ever try. So I am kind of wondering if it is better to have a single panel in my 4 by 4 or if I should have one for each plant? Maybe two plants per panel. I noticed that greenjewels had a 4 panels mounted as a single unit to cover a 4 by 4. I was wondering what advantages that method would provide?

Everyone is a little different. There are several reasons one would maybe want multiple fixtures or a single fixture. I’m not sure, but I don’t think greenjewels tent is as big as you’re thinking.

Hello @Oldsoldier1976, nice to meet you and welcome to the forum. Thank you for the compliment on the build.
My tent is listed as 32"x32"x63" but inside pole to pole measurement is actually 30"x30"x62
I chose my light due to my small space, height included. The thin and flat design helps with my height restrictions. I have great coverage for my small area. If I chose to go bigger, I could easily add some strip lights or more QBs. I also have the option of building a different frame and run them 4 side by side, long ways if I ever needed. My future options definitely played into my decision. I also like that my 120’s did not require a heat sink for cooling. I could grow 4 plants but they would be crowded and I don’t feel they would grow to full potential. I would only grow 3 max for that reason and even that’s crowded. Also I only grow autoflower as of now. That’s changing, I will eventually be moving my QBs to my taller tent I recently bought. And I’ll give a try at a photo plant in the near future. So far my current Amnesia haze auto and my Blueberry auto are the only ones I’ve grown under them and I’m impressed so far. I built the light when my previous autoflower was already about 60 days old and late flower, so I really don’t count it as a QB grow. Before I used 2 Amazon blurples. This QB light is definitely more efficient . It also doesn’t run as hot as my Amazon blurple lights I started with. I’m liking how tight my current Amnesia hazes buds are getting. I’m not very experienced. I started growing last April. I’ve grown 3 strains of autoflower. I’ve harvested 7 plants total one was an outdoor grow. I have 3 growing now. I hope that helped answer your questions. Let me know if you have any more. :v::green_heart:

@dbrn32 I have a mw hlg240 with 2 dc output cables and two atrium 288.2 boards wired together. I connect the brown wire on the driver to the black wire on my power cord, correct? And white to blue, green to green?

Thank you. I appreciate the information and the welcome. This is an educational experience for me to enjoy. I am enjoying it immensely. My plants are just at the beginning stages. I basically almost killed two random plants and they seem to be making a slow comeback.

I was close on the size of your tent guess. I had a feeling that it was a tad bigger but we both kind of did the same in the beginning. I bought a 24x24x48 tent and decided that it was going to be too small once the plants really started growing. I bought one of those burple lights from Amazon as well. I still have it but I added a bigger light in the tent. I like that one but I am open for ideas that could make my grow tent have more light without more heat. Right now with the two lights on (the bigger one with veg only switch on) my tent gets to about 82-84 degrees. I have three openings open on the tent. Two side vents and one of the draw tie openings (the one on the top) is open at about 3 inches diameter. I have a vent fan that I haven’t started yet. With these seedlings just starting to grow there isn’t any smell yet so… having that turned on isn’t a priority.

My thoughts on the benefits of the single fixture like you have with its rigid frame would allow you to put the panel on an angle to give coverage for different height plants but that seems a bit cumbersome. I will watch and learn. Good luck on your grow.

I have Maui Wowie and Durban Poison as known plants growing in my tent. I have two plants of unknown origin growing. They were seeds I pulled from some weed I was smoking a year or so ago. I have no idea if they are feminized or not. I just know that I might have killed them but I am glad it was those and not the Maui or Durban. Best to make mistakes on plants that are perfect for practice. Hell if one or both turn out to be male, I will pull them out of my tent and grow them in the fabric pot out of the tent and put them outside when the weather gets better.

This is my first grow ever. I am 62 years old and I am having fun.

That’s correct. Although hlg-240 should only have one output cable. Make sure you’re not confusing dimming leads for an output cable.

@dbrn32
Ok thanks. Is it better to wire both + to driver + and both neg to neg or wire the boards + to -? Parallel or series?

What is exact driver model number, hlg-240h-c2100a?

Hlg-240h-24b

Those need to be wired in parallel. Driver positive to one positive on each board. Driver negative to one negative on each board.
