I’ve come to conclusion that it doesn’t really matter what you’re doing. If you’re serious about it, it’s going to cost you some cash.
I bought my son a little honda crf 50 for his 4th bday. By end of summer we checking out a few local mx tracks. The next season he started racing and before you know it I had garage full of bikes and we were travelling the country. Stock bike, mod bike, 65 to learn how to shift, all with custom suspension and motor work. When his mother and I split, so did the mx budget and that was pretty much over with. He eventually got into bowling and we spent just as much money doing that.
@Bogleg have you read the book “If you give a moose a muffin…”
Your fly rod/fly post is really my life story. It’s how I do things as well, and I start small, get into it then upgrade, after becoming knowledgeable.
Oh ya, I don’t reload…but should. Hunting in general is expensive. My guns weren’t cheap. Love my TC Encore and the interchangeable barrels. Now that Ohio allows
certain calibers rifles with a straight wall cartridge, I must get a 45/70 for deer hunting. I bow hunt also. Arrows and broad heads are pricey .
Everyone in my family owns a bow other than me and baby. I assume the munchkin will take over her older sister’s, and the older girl will take over my son’s. He’s old enough he can go buy his own haha. They don’t hunt a lot, but my wife enjoys flinging some carbon with the kids.
I think the 45/70 has to be shortened to fit within the Ohio overall cartridge length (following some hunters on a 45/70 forum)
I was a Nationally ranked skeet shooter once (top 100) so there’s $10K in gun alone. Plus loaders to feed all four gauges. I hunt so I have a very carefully selected assortment of long guns. One S X S 20 gauge for all my bird hunting. My favorite is the Sharps I own followed by a Cooper in 340 Weatherby Magnum. I just rebarreled my Ruger No. 1 to 257 Wby as well. I cast for the 45 and the Sharps too. So there’s ANOTHER technology: Lyman, Hensley and Gibbs and RCBS molds at $100 ea. (30 of them?) plus a Star Luber/Sizer and dies.
It’s pretty hilly around here. This is my backyard . I prefer to not blood trail a deer. Best to knock them down before they can adrenaline run
Hit them where it counts and I’m eating good
I sort of cheat with fishing. My buddy has a 350 acre farm with a nice 2 acre pond. The bass are plentiful. It’s great to take the grandkids there, they don’t get bored.
This would be a good deer in our area. He gutted out around 120 lbs. Eyeguards are unusual on these coastal muleys. 50 caliber muzzleloader (T/C Omega).
Very nice mule deer!! We just have white tails around here, but good sized. My TC Encore 50 cal is my deer gun. Longer range than a shot gun and more knock down power and 175 yards is the furthest I’ve a shot deer. Had a lucky 200 yard kill on a coyote once it was definitely luck on that shot.
Those Thompson Centers shoot. I ran mine out to 300 yards; shot 1 1/2" 3 shot group with the Barnes TMZ and 110 gr. of Blackhorn 209 with a WW primer. Our longest shot was a big hog at 215 yards. Folded him.
I’ve always wanted to hunt a hog. They’re further south. My hubby wants to spear hint them down in Alabama, it’s legal there. I told him I’ll be up in the tree with the Ruger 44 Mag. I have no desire to spear one

I have a TC Impact that’s spot-on for the first shot at 100 meters. Second shot you can hit the paper, but where on the paper is up for grabs… third shot, no clue where it’s going. Definitely need to keep the barrel clean.
