Is there an actual yield difference when using a specific type of light? I am currently using some Flourescent lights for my 3 week old Clones and I am not sure if I really want to invest into an HPS setup because this is my first grow. I was specifically looking at a 600 watt Hortilux setup or a full spectrum LED off amazon.
thanks for the advice
I’m tagging in @dbrn32 for you. He will help you figure out the best bang for your bucks regarding lights
Is that the new ceramic hps you were looking at?
yes its like 500 dollars I think
Pretty sure @Alton66 has one. Let’s see what he thinks. Otherwise quite a few options around that price
Don’t compare the LED’s on Amazon to MH/HPS unless you target similar price points. It is an unfair comparison as those LED’s are really quite inefficient compared to the more expensive fixtures. I’m an LEd grower because I didn’t want to deal with the extra heat from MH/HPS.
I average between 8 and 12 oz per plant with a 4 1/2 month grow.
Okay thanks I appreciate the input! How big of a space do you give your plants to yield that average?
I use a home built grow box that is 4 X 6 X 6 feet. That gives me room for 3 flowering plants.
@Myfriendis410 is dead on about the heat. If you’ve got good AC or a dedicated fan just to pull air through the fixture. It’s nice to have the sunlight bright light of HPS but it’s hot in a smaller space. If not again @Myfriendis410 is right that you need to spend the money for a good light to get that same sunlight bright light. @dbrn32 can help you if you decide on LED @AlmightyHAM
@OldSkunk and @Myfriendis410 both have very good points. Was hoping Alton would be by, as I really don’t have a lot of information on that new light from hortilux.
What size space are we talking about here?
I have a 3 x 3 space but I plan on expanding it to at least 5x5
Isn’t CB using a LEC? Donaldj too?
Yessir. 315 cmh is good light in that space. Qb 260 kit, 250-300 watts of cobs good options too. All of which should come in around $500 or less.
@AlmightyHAM if you’re considering hid, check out those 315 cmh/lec. They’re a little more efficient than standard mh/hps and have quite a bit better light spectrum for our purpose. Just so happens to be pretty ideal for 3x3 space too.
If you use an HID with cool tube and pull the exhaust fan intake through it, heat is not a problem. If you use LEDs at the same wattage and don’t use an exhaust fan, your plants will get too hot. Directly venting the heat (HID or LED) out without mixing it with the rest of the grow chamber air keeps your grow chamber at a reasonable temperature.
Watts are watts: They can’t just disappear. A 1000 watt HID bulb puts out almost exactly the same amount of heat as a real 1000 watts of LED lamps. I should know: I have about 750 watts of COBs heating my house over the winter!
