Hey y’all. My first post here and I am stumped. I generally just throw some seeds in the dirt and they sprout. Last year wasn’t so great. Planted 15 and got 6. Dog ate 5. Would up with almost an ounce. But hey, it was good so I was happy. I had to repot a houseplant a few weeks ago and used some of my outside dirt and low and behold a week later 2 sprouts had sprung beside my Mother in Law plant! Then yesterday I went out to get my little shovel to plant some potatoes and found several had sprouted in my outside pots as well as ONE COMING OUT OF SOME STAGNANT WATER IN A TRASHCAN I USE OUT THERE!!! So I need to know what I should do with all of this. It is still way early here to be planting but there they are, seeds from the past 6 years just popping up willy nilly on their own. Should I go ahead and pit them up correctly or just destroy them? Will they be any good since they’ve been out there under the dirt and in the dark and cold since this time last year? And the one in that water, what about it? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
Welcome to the forum!
The one in trash can growing in water would be hydroponic if let stay that way. What you do with it from there is up to you. Be cautioned that it will be required to be treated differently if you leave it there.
The rest of then should probably be potted in a manner that you can care for them. That’s different for everyone, but you may want to let them develop a little more. My worry is that there’s not much for root structure, if you damaged what is there plants may not recover from it.
Thanks for the info. Weird how they sprouted up after a year out there. They were seeds from some real good pot. Do you think after a year they would still be worthy? I can beef up the soil around the ones, no problem but I have no clue about the one in the water, although it would be interesting to see what could come of it. Do I just leave it there? I mean it appears that nature is doing its thing without help from me. I mean idk what to do with it. I will go back and that part of the Grow Bible and see what it says but I can’t imagine it covers seeds that germinate on their own in a deep and dark trashcan with a foot of water in it. Right? Lol! It’s just crazy.
They popped, they are worthy.
The one in water will require some care eventually. It still has cots, but will need nutrients once they die off, and ph of solution it’s in will become important too. You could maybe research Kratky method, but I can’t really help you there.
Yep. Kinda how I see it too. Thanks for the good info. I totally appreciate it. Happy Growing!
