No problem @Bentstick welcome to the show!
20 days into flower cycle. Trimmed some of the fan leaves that were blocking light and air flow. Accidentally snipped a bud off. Man is it sticky and fragrant already!
Hasn’t stretched a whole lot so far which is fine with me, 28 " tall right now. Still several weeks to go but so far so good!
Super soil approach seems to be working well. Now that it is into flower whenever I need to do some top watering I’m applying a compost tea made from Nature’s Living Soil Girl Flower Power Bud Enhancer and sulpher free blackstrap molasses just short of runoff. Did a soil slurry ph test a couple of days ago and it came it at a perfect 6.5.
Looking for some help from all the experts here on the forum. Miss Maui Wowie is 4 weeks into flower. All seems to be going OK except for some of the fan leaves. I think this may be normal at this point but I wanted to ask for opinions.
I performed a runoff test using RO water and an AC Infinity PH/EC meter with these results:
PH 6.15
EC 560
She is planted in
- A 5 gallon fabric pot with a mixture of Fox Farm Happy Frog and Ocean Forest occupying the top half of the pot and Nature’s Living Soil Super Soil concoction in the bottom half.
- Watering is through the AC Infinity self watering base and as the soil dries out I apply a compost tea made with Nature’s Living Soil Girl Power soil amendment adjusted if necessary to a ph of 6.5 just short of runoff.
- Light intensity is at 750 ppf for 12 hours a day.
- Daytime temps hover around 80 degrees with 50% humidity.
By this time the Fox Farm nutrients should be consumed and she should be eating from the Super Soil layer in the pot.
Questions I have come up with:
- Is this leaf degradation to be expected at this time in her flowering cycle? The sugar leaves look just fine.
- Is she hungry? Is the Super Soil/compost tea not giving her enough to eat?
- Is the lighting too intense?
- Is the daytime temp too high? Not much I can do about the temp. It’s summer here and the temp in the lung room even with air condtioning hovers around 78 degrees. The tent is vented to the outside to draw out the heat from the light. So I guess a 2 degree difference isn’t bad.
Thank you all for any input you can offer.
For soil that PH is low and should be in the range of 6.3-6.8. Check that EC to see if that’s .56 if so that’s around 250 PPMs and she’s starving. The necrotic leaves are not normal and probably PH and lack of nutrients related. Definitely showing an advanced calcium deficiency
@OGIncognito. Is it too late in the flowering cycle to correct? If not what would you suggest? I’m thinking the Super Soil is not working for me this go round. I have both Jack’s 321, Advanced Nutrients Sensi Bloom A&B and Advanced Nutrients Sensi Grow A&B available to me.
Also what would you suggest to raise the ph of the soil. Will using one of the above fertilizer regimens work or do I need to do something else?
Thanks
If that EC is an accurate reading I would feed at 800 PPMs or an EC of 1.6 and the PH around 6.8-7.0. Jacks would be my preference
Thanks! I will give that a go.
Well I think I may have reached harvest time! Plant has been in flower for 8 weeks/56 days.
I am seeing a fair amount of amber mixed in with the cloudy. However, I still have white pistils coming out of the tops of most of the buds. I am not looking for a super duper couch lock smoke so what does everyone think about harvesting now? How hard and fast is the rule that all pistils need to be brown and pulled into the bud before harvesting?
Here are five pics from five different buds scattered across the plant.
I’d also like to share that I took the leap and purchased a Cannatrol Cool Cure dry and cure machine. Excited to see how well it works!
Thanks!
Well done Grow Bro, @Retiredoldguy can vouch for the cannatrol
I like mine…I just put my second plant into the darn thing today…
I took Miss Maui Wowie down today. While trimming I noticed something odd on a few of the larger buds, seeds! Not many but they are a few here and there. I also found a few what appear to be seed pods that are swollen but empty. It appears as if she hermied on me!
After a bit of research I found that this will sometimes happen late in the flowering cycle. The plant has grown for so long with out being pollinated that it decided to take matters into it’s own ‘hands’. It can also be caused by stress and that could be the cause as well. I have been driving it pretty hard the last few weeks with the light intensity and it has been rather warm, 80-82 degrees, in the tent during the day.
I’m glad I took it down when I did because I learned that if the plant is making seeds it is not putting all it’s energy into building and ripening the buds. I took some more close up pictures of the trichomes and there are more then enough ambers showing. If I had waited any longer I’m pretty sure that the quality of the buds might suffer. The buds are incredibly dense and sticky. The aroma is through the roof.
I popped the harvest into the Cannatrol and started the Dry cycle. I’ll keep everyone informed as the dry and cure process progresses. I will also post some pictures of the harvest when I can get around to it.
Here are the pics I promised:

First pic is just 1/4 of what she gave me. I didn’t weigh the harvest before placing into the Cannatrol but I filled five of the six shelves in the unit!
What’s interesting about the seeds appearing is that this plant has always been the only one in the tent. I only grow one plant at a time due to space constraints.
Nice buds ya have there.
Thanks! Can’t wait for the Cannatrol to do it’s thing and give them a whirl!
Brother that’s some beautiful flowers. Nice and full. There’s nothing better than bulky buds. You harvested just the right time as I see she started to foxtail. Congratulations on your haul.
Time for a harvest update. Buds have completed their dry cycle in the Cannatrol Cool Cure and are entering their 4th day of curing. I used the default settings for both dry and cure and they seem to work quite well in my opinion. I am very happy with the Cool Cure. Glad I took the plunge! It is quite expensive but well worth the cost.
I pulled the harvest out for a weigh in, 5 ounces! Went back into the Cool Cure for additional curing. Figured I’d let it cure for two weeks or maybe more before sampling. I still have over an ounce of my Granddaddy Purple grow so no hurry.
