Please tell me you didn’t say that out loud - that would be Strike 3 for my 1st Grow ![]()
It has every ability to have male parts. Photos would help when you get a chance. Up close on a few of the spots where the branch joins the main stalk. The nodes are where male parts will show up usually
Okay you lost me there, but I will google b/c I don’t know what that means, sorry. ![]()
She’s got pistils - those small wispy white hairs. She’s lookin like a lady. Back to the waiting game!
Edit: specifically here
Hey there
thanks for your input. The one that was drowning is deceased - shi##y way to learn, but learning. Everyone here has been very helpful and I appreciate the help. I just posted some pics of my one and only “LOVE”. Got what I ordered to correct the problem, put her on 12/12, now she is really ![]()
OMG I love confirmation and for the picture w/illustration - that helps so much! I’ve read so much and the more I read the worse I got
Not a perfect science and every plant is different; which is fascinating and I actually love all that I’m learning even though 2 are deceased. So today my Dad comes in to check on me and his “medicine” and as he turned to walk away he said to me, “LOVE IS THE GREATEST OF ALL
” Sorry - I’m rambling
Any time. I learned best with photos and demos on real plants. Theory is one thing. So are opinions. None of those are ever as good as having a mentor along the way. I’m happy to offer what I have when it becomes relevant for you - I try not to overload new growers. I remember learning everything too. It was overwhelming and often times I’d just check out because I didn’t get the lingo.
Thank you so much for mentoring me - the only reason I haven’t started any new seeds is because I don’t do well when I split my focus, especially now!
What method do you use to dry (harvesting)?
I just hang my plants in my bathroom. Bud wash and hang dry.
Perfect
Will I need to trim any of the fan leaves b/c there are many, if so, how long should I wait before trimming? I ask because there is a lot going on down including the new growth which is trying to grow pistils?
I don’t run nets so I may be of limited help here.
I remove almost all of my fan leaves or all of them when the plant begins to flower. The appearance of pistils is a sign of maturity- which is a good thing. Flowering should be close - still give it a week or two but it may not take that long.
Anyway. Evaluate which fan leaves are obstructing air flow and remove them. Usually oversized fan leaves are the first to go, then anything in the center of the plant and bigger leaves towards the top of the plant.
Some growers remove any foliage on the bottom 1/3rd of the plant.
@HappyHydroGrower is a hydro grower who uses nets and does pretty beautiful defoliation- perhaps he can weigh in as well. ![]()
What do you do? This is my 1st time to use the net and I used it to keep them from leaning. I started with 3 and they were pretty good size before they died. I like it because, I can be somewhat clumsy and that net has saved their asses from my ass numerous times
seriously. I’m 60 - I’m allowed, at least that’s what I keeping tell myself
.
And yes quite a few leaves blocking air, not all are big, but they still block airflow
Essentially, as little as possible. Seriously I’m probably the laziest grower here. I’m not kidding. I’m also not sure whether to be proud of that or ashamed of it.
My plant room looks like this right now - only one of them is in DWC like yours at this exact moment. I’ve been procrastinating moving my RDWC setup into the room and actually just put a clone machine where the RDWC was supposed to go ![]()
When my branches get too heavy, I use plant yo-yos to tie them up to my lights. It keeps the buds from falling over too badly. I also use yo-yos to do LST.
As far as your leaves go, I’d suggest going through and removing a third of all the fan leaves, more or less. Maybe a few more than that. I like to take off anything that overlaps other leaves too much, anything that looks funny (usually old and crispy because it didn’t get enough light), or anything that is damaged from a deficiency along the Grow - I’m far from perfect and still run into magnesium and phosphorus deficiencies from time to time - it’s the perk of being lazy: my plants get hungry. ![]()
Hey brother, appreciate the tag. Not sure how much more help I’ll be. You seem to have nailed it all on the head.
Sorry I haven’t had a chance to reply before now. Life is kicking my tail… lol BUSY BUSY!
Hey @angelique1 welcome to the community!
Everybody does things a little different at times so you just have to listen learn and take in as much as you can, which sounds like you are.
@Graysin has you covered on pretty much everything. I usually use a screen of some kind for scrogging, either pvc with screws and string or wire screen of some kind. A trellis net is better for support.
I’m actually experimenting with a scrog made out of pvc and craft wire. I like to have a little more stability than what string gives me.
Now to address the fan leaf removal. A general rule of thumb is on photos, you would trim off all leaves at 21 days and 42 days after flip to 12/12.
When I ran my last autos, I trimmed the leaves about a week and a half after pistols started forming. I would trim everything off of the bottom third of the plant. Then slowly trim a few leaves every day which included all leaves that had a stem that protrudes more than an inch from the stalk.
One good thing about hydro is, there is hardly ever a recovery time. Soil is deferent but in hydro, they just don’t seem to need as much of a recover time.
But, with that being said, autos are another story. You still have to be careful not to stress an auto too much or you’ll take a chance of them hermaphrodite on you.
I run a two site rdwc system and scrog every plant. It’s just me and my wife and we don’t smoke a lot. After this grow I imagine we’ll be throwing a bunch of weed away because We’ll never smoke it all. Each plant we grow usually averages about 10 - 14 oz. Point is, I would highly recommend getting away from those buckets and going with totes and a diy rdwc system. If I can build mine, so can you!
I run Jack’s 321 nutes and IMHO, you can’t beat its simplicity and its the cheapest out on the market I think. I would highly recommend it!
I’ll be watching! Good luck and keep’em growin! ![]()

Hi spyonyou! Wow…that is a wealth of information!! Thank you so very much for sharing it with me! I had actually trimmed the leaves (over 1/3 of the plant) prior to reading your suggestions though I will definitely go with the 21 and 42 day trim on my next grow. Fortunately, the plant recovered well and is doing great but I have to admit… I was a little worried. Throwing weed away?? I can’t wait for the day that I have that issue. lol
Hi Graysin, Ok, I’m getting a little concerned. I use GH and fed Monday using their feeding schedule. I also trimmed the plant a bit more than you advised (oops) and today the plant looks alot less green and droopy. I don’t know if it needs more nutrients or what?
Do you have pictures?
How low is the water level? ![]()
![]()
Same question as Spy.
What’s the water level?
Water temp?
Water pH?
Room temp?
Humidity level?
And “according to their chart” means what in terms of PPMs?
We’ll get you sorted. ![]()
