Hello everyone! Just wanted to make a new journal for my first attempt at SCROGing some Gelato feminized seeds from ILGM!! I love hearing everyone’s input if you guys have any tips/tricks/etc! This is only my second grow so please share your thoughts I am eager to learn!!
Right now I am a little bit confused on which shoots/leaves I should be removing to encourage air flow and light exposure. On my last grow I ended up pruning more than I believe I should have and ended up with a relatively small yield. So this time around I am trying to prune less, but now I feel overwhelmed with how much growth is clumped together. Maybe it’s fine and I should just leave it? Or maybe it’s too crowded and there won’t be enough room for the colas to grow nice dense buds? What do you guys think?

Nice pics, thanks for sharing. Nipping and pruning seems to be a matter of opinion. Me personally I couldn’t help nipping a leaf here and there and before I knew it I had a bag full of trim.i wish I could have resisted the urge. My wife resisted and her sprig is 2x as full as mine ( same plant and lights) she didn’t constantly nip leaves and leaving those leaves worked every time I took leaves the growth slowed down.

A couple comments about a scrog. I might be absolutely full of it since I just kind of wing it, so wait to hear from others in case I it’s coming out my ears.
I train my branches to the scrog by tucking them underneath and tying them down to the net and trying to get the plant canopy even and spread out over the growing space as much as possible. When I’m happy with the coverage I flip to 12/12 and let them go from there.
Any leaves, buds or branching falling short of the net I consider cutting off.
As for @Allinherhead ‘s answer, I read a recent study that is out for peer review that suggests that taking off fan leaves to expose bud sites is counter productive. The buds will grow bigger and better if you let the plants leaves process the sugars and fatten up the buds then it will to cut the leaves off to expose the buds. I’ve been trying it with minimum pruning and noticed big improvement in harvest. Trim with a purpose!

Im a complete noob but love yhis forum and the people here are awsome. Its nice being able to watch someones progress and learn from it. And to be able to contribute in some small way is a great reward. Keep sharing your grow ill enjoy following along

Well let’s just see here…
This is 3-10 (2 days after seeing first buds).
And 3-12 after defoliation.
And now today 4-4
I like to tuck under, over, crop, pinch limbs, whatever it takes to keep the canopy even as it grows. You just do the best you can and you learn more and more each grow.
Not quite sure

Looking good brother!

Am I supposed to prune these types of side shoots when doing a SCROG?

Anything that doesn’t make it through the screen is not worth keeping.

Imo until your screen is as full as you want it before flower I would let her run and keep tucking until flower and then only to promote airflow and light. Then after stretch anything that didn’t make it above the net.
I’m still a noob so don’t do anything based on what I offer. I’m sure lots of experienced people will chime in.

I am already in flower. I didn’t want to stretch her two far since I’m running my one light this time. I usually have two in this tent. Today is the last day of week 1 since switching to 12/12 so I’m in the pre flower stretch right now

Week 1 of flower officially done. She’s getting really crowded, stretching like crazy. She’s starting to get a little uneven but I can’t decide if I should do anything about it, possibly add another net. I’m feeling really intimidated by how many leaves there are and how I should go about trying to defoliate her because the colas seem like they will be a little close together. Happy with how vigorous she is growing! What do you guys think??

This is wifes scrog. Very little pruning. She wants to harvest the top when ready then get a second harvest of lower buds. She has to drag me away because of my desire to get in there with some snips lol. In my mind shes gone againt all the norms. In coco she waters to run off and then lets it soak back up. No top no prune. And yet this thing just keeps getting better everyday

That would be my only advice as well. Keep pulling those outer branches to the next square and fill it out. Force her to go out, instead of up for now

Thank you guys for the input!!

I was thinking the same thing about spreading her out but I really wanted to try and get some long colas this grow because they turned out way too short on my last grow because of over-pruning! So I was kind of purposely letting her get tall and only spread her this much because I’m running my 1 light setup this round. But I think you guys are right I’ll try to spread her out some more, I just hope she will still have time to stretch pretty tall. Then, after I finish flower this gelato, I have two other gelatos to move into this tent and I’ll switch to my 2 light setup so I can really fill up the tent wall-to-wall. Thank you friends! I love sharing with everyone involved in this community, y’all crack me up, and really help me push myself to the next level. All input is very much appreciated!!! @CMichGrower @Allinherhead @HappyHydroGrower @Calizona @Myfriendis410
So this is the first day of week 2 since the flip. This is before I’m going to try to stretch her out some more. Thanks for the love!
She’s really starting to stink up and smells very sweet!!

A properly done SCROG will not allow for long colas. Too many tops and the plant can only produce so much flower.

Yea I’ve kinda begun to realize that as I’ve read more and more articles about SCROGing. So I guess I have done more of a skeletal support with my net

@Myfriendis410 then in my case, do you think I should keep tucking to increase yield?

So I like to SCROG: more so I can futz with the plants than anything else. I’ve run plants side by side, upright with topping and supercropping only and in a SCROG. I’ve not seen a meaningful difference in yields.
What I think is more important is to support the plant so it remains healthy throughout the grow. And yes, I would probably do a judicious fan leaf removal from your plant to open up some bud sites to air and light. Nothing major.
