I’m a newbie… with solo cup questions

Clear cups can be problematic because roots are supposed to be in total darkness. I’d suggest red ones in the future, but for now, you can place them inside the red ones.

Also, do you have drainage holes in the bottom? I use a cigarette lighter and melt 4 slots on the bottom rim.

I use clear cups placed inside of opaque cups. That way I can see when the roots start getting to the container walls.

@merlin44, I read an article a few years ago that suggested if you use a clear cup inside a colored cup you should make sure to darken the rim around the top of the clear cup with either a non toxic marker or black tape. They explained how the clear rim around the top of the cup would get hit with light and reflect it straight down the clear plastic sides of the cup and expose the roots to light even when it’s placed inside a colored cup.

This is my first plant. I start with a solo cup with Happy Frog Soil. I transplanted my Grand Daddy Purple feminized seeds. Started with 2 seeds and only 1 rooted for me. Transplanted seed into solo cup on 9/21. The solo cup is clear and I can see the roots growing to outer cup. I have my light on 100% and 18hrs on and 6 hrs off. I have only been using distilled water in spray bottle.

welcome to growing and the community. This is a great place to learn, a lot of folks here willing to share their hard earned knowledge on growing. I am new myself and I Dont do any transplanting so im afraid I cant offer much on the subject. plant is looking good, well done! ive heard great things about happy frog. what soil are you going to use for final pot? I use ocean forest by same company as happy frog with great results. some folks do say oceanforest is to hot for seedlings and suggest the happy frog. Lookimg forward to seeing your girl come along.

I’m ready to transplant into 5gal black cloth planter. I was going to use Happy Frog soil. The same as I used in the solo cup. Is it too early to transplant? If not I will make drainage holes in solo cup. Thank you for your advice!

I suggest transplanting right away. They have been struggling in those solo cups.

In general the rule of thumb is transplant when leaves extend over the edges of the cup, but your leaves are small and plants are way past due.

I when I transplant my gdp fem into 5 gal pot, how much water do I feed her for the first time?

The plants are small they don’t need a lot of water. about every 3 days water in a 6 inch circular pattern away from the plant about a pint of water for now. As the plants get bigger they will take more water. Hope that helps good luck !

No clear containers I tried them this past season they grew but had issues with the plants.
Stunted root system. Then root rot.
My plants in fabric pots grew great, but next year I will grow in black 10" pots and put directly in soil.

I did this because I wanted to see the roots so I’d know when to transplant.
I also used pea pods for planting my seeds in. I think they worked well for seed starting.

Has anyone else used these?

The only thing I don’t like about them is, the membrane holding to soil together doesn’t decompose.

Here’s a trick i learned last grow. Split the clear solo cup top to bottom in 2 places so when you transplant it so easy to get the plant out by simply spreading out the cup.
