So I have been growing hydroponically now for almost six years now with three plants in a 40L seedling tank, and three mature plants in my 85L tank. I dropped a Purple Punch, Skittlez, and Godfather on 8/4 and they took off like a rocket. I planted them in clay pellets on 8/10, and moved them to the big tank on 9/10. I like to flip to flower when they reach about 50cm tall to account for the stretch and these were very close. I attached pictures when they were about 28 days old and about 40cm tall.
After moving them to the big tank, I mixed up nutrients according to GH 9 part Late Veg Feed Chart found on line. I like to use additives which get me in trouble a lot, and this time was no exception. To complicate matters, I fogot the list of nutrients in the other room. I use a walker and wheelchair to get around and that paper was a bridge too far, so I added my nutrients from memory. How does that saying go? Ignorance leads to Arrogance, leads to stupidity. Well, I know where I am now on the scale. Here’s a picture the day I moved them.
So I tried making nutrient additions over three days, but Purple Punch was suffering, so I dumped the Rez and that fixed the problem.
Here’s where I struggle the most when toxicity, deficiency issues occur. I can’t for the life of me determine the problem from a picture. I simply don’t possess that skill so many on this site have. So to try and make up for my inability, I figured I would try to incorporate the " Nutrient Relationship Chart" I downloaded off this site awhile back. In the next slide I listed the actual Nutrient content in milligrams I calculated from the products listed on the left side. I compared the results to the nominal “target” values calculated from the GH Late Veg 9 Part Feed Charts and found the difference. Target values for each nutrient are calculated from the potassium content in my nutrient solution. General Hydroponics agreed with my calculations, so that has already been verified.
I displayed the difference of each in the Nutrient Relationship chart and wrote my assessment on the bottom of the page based on antagonism, stimulation AND NOT THE PICTURES.
So what I am asking is for the very knowledgeable people here to look at the pictures in the center of the page and tell me what the issues REALLY are.
Its all listed under conditions. The pH is controlled automatically and stays between 5.9 and 6.3. The EC was 1.2 which is low for plants in this stage. So with a low EC, and the nitrogen content also being low in relation to the potassium content, I believe that contributed to the issue.
Hey @Low , I hope this message finds you well. Last September you posted this diagram and was wondering if you could provide some guidance how to apply it?
The chart posted above, is that your normal recipe or just what you ended up with trying to do it from memory?
Asking because you’re showing what is basically a 1-1-2 npk ratio. Which is pretty much what lucas formula will get you just using micro, bloom, and calmag. I doubt you’ll get anyone to tell you it’s a perfect npk ratio but has been tried and true method for gh flora series for many years.
It sounds like your attacking this as a scientist. So first us like to use additives? Are they all compatible with each other? In my indoor grows I use Advanced Nutrients PH Perfect and any additives comes from them and is designed to be mixed with their products. This is overlooked very often. You should always keep in mind what works for one may not work for another. This has to do with your terroir or environment. The things that make it different could be altitude, mean temperatures, air quality or barometric pressure.
Hey @Low@OH_Ganjier and dbrn32. Shortly after my original post, I was forced to deal with issues from my Lou Gehrig’s decease and then a nasty fall. I’ve learned from my farming childhood to shake it off and get back in the saddle.
I found online several companies that use Mulder’s chart and Liebig’s Law of the minimum to develop nutrient solutions for clients. They stress the importance of first taking baseline measurements to determine the current environment. Then a nutrient solution can be found for whatever target crop is to be grown.
Trying to use Mulder’s chart to determine a deficiency was a mistake on my part. But learning is doing and yes, I make mistakes along the way.
A couple of grows ago, I grew some ILGM do-si-dos that were dripping in resin. I used GH Purpinator in that grow and wasn’t sure if it was the genetics, or the Purpinator. I plan on incorporating this product into the GH 10 Part Flora Series NPK ratios to prevent any nutrient imbalances BEFORE I mix the nutrients. This is the proper way of applying Mulder’s chart.
My plants recovered in 4 days after I did a nutrient exchange. I attached some pictures on chop chop day.
I kind of feel like plant fertilizer is something you’re trying to keep simple as possible or all the way down the rabbit hole. Anywhere in-between those has much greater potential to be treacherous territory. Liebigs law should be something more in tune for base nutrient manufacturers and isn’t something typical home growers can differentiate with basic tools, inputs, and setups. So it’s mu opinion that you should start with a trusted and/or proven base nutrient program and reference recommended mixing instructions. Getting a soil test is great, but if you’re feeding regularly the test results will change all the time and be difficult to keep up with.
Mulders chart is kind of a different animal but again is somewhat easily used in context of other data to draw a reasonable conclusion.
I struggled a little with organics but find using synthetics consistently to be relatively trouble free. As such, tend to be on the side of not fixing things that aren’t broken. I will tinker a little but don’t stray to far from a pretty basic recipe with ec around 1.9. Finding most issues I see to be related to missing a feeding or increasing/decreasing feeding frequency.
I meant to say that companies use Liebig’s law in injunction with Mulder’s. I wouldn’t have a clue how to apply it. I wasn’t very clear about that.
