Help!! I have lost two seeds already. I am trying to grow indoors, but with ambient light from the outside. I live in the San Francisco area and I have been using Rapid Rooter Plugs. I place the seed in the wet plug and be sure to keep moist. I put a jar over most of the plug to keep it moist and warm. The seeds have sprouted great after about 3-4 days, but then a few days after the roots and shoot show the plants have died. I am thinking that they are getting too cold at night as temperatures in my house get into the low 60’s F and it may be cooler as the seeds sit by my double pain windows. Do you think that is my problem? Or too much water? Don’t use the inverted quart jar? I hate to lose another valuable AK47 seed. Have any suggestions?
Also if you keep them near a window is not like them benefits from the like them are directly under it… Probably them was stretched and very tall… Also overwater is a main problem for seedling … Whitout any pictures is hard for us to give a awnser for this question.
I would say if they r sprouted you need to put them under a direct light and it is possible that young that the temps could stop growth. Under 55 or over 88 they say slows growth almost to a stop. And being that young you don’t want to stress them at all. Seedling Like temps in the 70’s with high humidity. The jars could b cutting off oxygen to if there is no air getting in there. The plants need oxygen to grow. But if it were me I’d put a heat mat under them in a dome with a direct light on them until they become strong trying to use sunlight is useless unless it’s warm and strong IMO!
Yes, it’s getting too cold for seedlings to thrive. Try a heat mat and instead of a jar get a plastic dome or even rig something with some plastic wrap with some holes poked into it.
I am the original poster with the problem. Here are more details: I used rapid grow seed plugs with about 0.5 - 1" water in plate below. I have pictures, but they show nothing. Seeds sprouted great in about 3 days, then after some growth they just shriveled up. The first made it to a stem with 2 leave and the second did not get that far. I reused the same plug. Is that OK? The quart jar was about 0.75" inch above the top of the seed plug. I used a dilute solution of fertilizer for plants liking acidic soil for the water in plate. During the first seed the weather was warmer. Cooler with second. I sort of feel they got too cold, but what is too cold and how can I keep warm? I do not want to put outside at this point.

Sounds like damping off, especially if you’re keeping the rapid rooters in a puddle of h20.
I use rapid rooters. The trick is to wring them out so they’re damp like a gently wrung-out sponge. You only want them to stay damp, not soggy. So, even though they’re sprouting, the excess moisture is probably killing your roots.
Get a heat mat & a domed propagation tray; they’re not expensive. Keep your rooters damp, not soaking. Make sure your babies get fresh air. If they stretch, you need more light, and some air flow to strengthen the stretched stems.
I am the original poster and I measured the pH with pH paper and it was 5 - 6 and closer to 6. This is the pH of the fertilizer solution used to water the seed. Too acidic?
Yes s seedling doesn’t need any food yet. If it shriveled up sounds like it dried out. Or the heat was to much for it. A seedling you want high humidity around 72 degrees. Once it pops it will slow growth to build a root system. If you use a seedling soil like fox farms Light Warrior it will feed for up to 3 wks. By then you should have decent growth if things are right. After about 5 sets of leaves you can begin to feed it as needed. When they r young and fragile try to keep its environment as close to perfect as possible.
ORIGINAL POSTER: Trying with another AK47 seed. Using rapid grow pod in a dish of about 1/4" tap water (pH 5 - 6). Have near window, but with grow light and maintain temperature from about 70 - 77F with heat lamp. Also have under the dish with the grow pod and seed a dish of water to try and provide more humidity. Loosely hung around all of this is clear plastic to try and maintain a constant environment. Been about a week and no germination. Any thoughts? I really tried to make the seed as happy as possible and now not even germination.
