Hydro vs soil outside grow

I need some advice please. I want to grow a few plants outside. I have no experience growing. I live in Tucson Arizona and I think I should be planting by March 1st. I can purchase some six each clone starters from a licensed seller. I think that would help me to get a good start. And they are only $40 each.
My question is would it be easier for me to put them in 5 gallon hydro bucket system or in soil? Any advice to be appreciated. I’m learning from this website and also from YouTube.

Thanks Forrest

I would go with soil. You are going to have a big challenge on your hands managing reservoir temps outdoor in AZ in the Summer.

Welcome to the forum.

Check out these 2 outdoor threads. Both of these guys are very active members growing in Arizona. You will have similar challenges. It looks like the links jump to the end of their threads. You will have to manually scroll to the beginning if you find this useful.

Ck your light hours for that date, may be to soon :green_heart::metal:t2:

March is too early to put plants outside and a little too early to start seeds outside unless you’re growing autos. Not enough daylight hours. As soon as the plant reaches sexual maturity it will strat flowering too early and then reveg and then switch back to flowering. I start mine inside in April and transplant them outside in June. If I start seeds outside I wouldn’t start any earlier than mid April If I lived in southern Arizona. Im up north and at 5000ft elevation. 1st of May can work if you can keep them warm.

Welcome to the forum @DirtMan101 your in the right place.

Hi @DirtMan101 welcome to ILGM. As @plumbdand stated. Do an auto, start indoors or wait til April/May. You got plenty of time to get prepared though. Good luck!

Ive started seeds outside 1st week of June that got huge over 2lbs of buds dried and cured but I’ve had plants that I started inside in April that gave me over 4lbs and one 5lb plant. I transplant them into the ground in June in a living soil I’ve been working on for years. Southern Arizona your gonna need shade and a "green zone"around your plants. They call them covercrops. I use clover and buckwheat but there’s a bunch of others that work well with Mj. If you grow in soil you want to use white grow bags or white buckets with lots holes all up and down the sides and the bottom. 5gal buckets are too small, IMO, for outdoors. Hydro outdoors in Tucson would not work very well.

Wow! I guess I don’t know half of what I should know. I definitely need to do more research. Thanks everyone for all the tips please keep them coming. If anyone has any links to good tutorial videos I would appreciate that also.

Thanks Forrest

Well I have come to the terms that I don’t know a damn thing. And now that you guys are suggesting that I plant later I think that’s going to make it more difficult for me to babysit them since I work a 12-hour shift graveyard. It will be a little difficult for me to babysit them during the hot part of the day.

So now I am looking at doing a small grow tent in my house. Here is the one I found on Amazon hopefully the link will work can you please give me your opinion on this?

VIVOSUN Grow Tent System Amazon.com: VIVOSUN GIY Smart Grow Tent System 2.7x2.7, WiFi-Integrated Grow Tent Kit, with Automate Ventilation and Circulation, Schedule Full Spectrum 150W LED Grow Light, and GrowHub E42A Controller : Patio, Lawn & Garden

I have this exact tent. If you are interested in any questions fire away. I started on hydro and unless you get an auto pH system 12 hours alone will not work out. In natural soil with natural nutes now. Just flipped to flower.

I run 90% hydro and go days without adjusting.
No automation for Rez :green_heart::metal:t2:

Yes I definitely need help. I am brand new to this world. So being that I know absolutely nothing would I be better off starting off in soil or in hydro? I’m only planning on doing two plants right now

Soil for many reasons. Organic is just a little slower than other methods and honestly hydro is very much faster in veg but not much different in flower and a plant spends more time in flower.

The tent you picked is the same one my wife picked out fore as a gift. She has seen the activity on the Amazon account and bought it happy birthday
Ok 2.7 x 2.7 x 63. That is 6.7 square feet. A grow where you get righteous buds and fills the tent and 2 plants will fill this tent needs 40-50 watts per square foot. That means your light will cover a little more then 3.4 feet for about 43 watts per foot. This is enough light for one plant.

So I bought another one of the same lights. Mounted them at the top of the tent and adjusted the light by the Vivosun app and lifting the plants on 5 gallon buckets. The second thing I did was adjust the light using a simple lux meter. We use lux as a reference point but we watch the reactions of the plant at lux levels and we document changes and reactions. Move the lights on the tilt using pop sicle sticks until the light power is level across the whole tent. Now no light in the way and you have a steady light as lights on a long string ( provided in kit ) wobble in the air.
The tent is well made and has a strong zipper. There tent also bags up and is very loose. A great stoner hack is a plastic clothes hanger in the corners. It spreads the loose tent fabric. Boom 3x3 tent!

My first grow I tried to do cheap with a humidifier in the tent and reptile bulbs in the ceiling for added heat. I put them both on the same Inkbird outlet controller and it kept pretty good numbers. I could get to 80 degrees and stay within 1.5 degrees. Humidity control sucked. Best I could do was 3 up 2 down for humidity control. This led to an outbreak of power mildew that was corrected but due to control I had to lower the humidity. This out my numbers out of reach. This is what I mean.

This is the app screen for Vivosun. You can see from the app the temp and humidity and what is called the Vapor Pressure Deficit. Another word for VDP is dew point. Vdp is important because a cannabis plant has a broad range that it will grow in but a more narrow range where it delivers good yield and potency. I am in early flower at 1.1 vdp. Here is the same screen at night time. Lights off and lower heat but the VDP is the same for both.

The tent is small but will do 2 plants well if configure properly. I am sure you saw the picture of the air handler and carbon filter in the tent.
Gads that’s stupid. Cut a piece of wood the dimensions of the tent pole top and mount it on the roof to pull air out. This frees up so much room. The tent will hold over 100 lbs ( in the manual) and it prolly weighs 25 lbs.
The tent has many 6 inch holes for running stuff in and out of the tent and a couple of cooling panels that can be opened that have built in insect screens. The tent holes also have a very serviceable light exclusion system using simple draw strings. Works fine.
My reconfigure of the system included an ACi 68pro controller and the heater box and 15 liter humidifier. This was the best move I have made. I can dial down to a .4 degree wave and humidity is 1 up 1 down. The humidity and temp numbers on the Vivosun app track the same as the ACi controller. It’s just another duplication that I rely on to maintain the tent environment

Here is the current grow. While widow bought from this place. 45 days above ground and just flipped to flower on Thursday.

I am using for farms happy frog and ocean. Forest 50-50. 3 cups perlite for drainage. Placed in 5 gallon fabric pots that come with the tent. When needed I top dressed with a mixture of fox farms soil conditioner with added Earth Worm Castings or EWC around here and some vermiculite for water retention. Now that I am in flower I am using organic pour nutes. The only thing you need to do with the pour nutes is pH after mixing like you should pH your water when you give the plants a string. 6 3 ph plus or minus .1

I have a lot of stuff I bought trying to balance the environment. The added light is about $100 bucks on sale. The heater box was $99 and the humidifier 179. ACI pro controller $70. That pretty much. All ai should have spent. Now add extra controllers and a DWC system ( do not buy those make them OMG if you do hydro in this little tent you will hate it). Hydro should be a 4x4 tent.

Now the best place for information is here and growweedeasy.com Look for grow journals and follow from start to finish. This will show you both success and failure although the punks who fail just bail out. My first journal was closed as a fail and I documented what happens so no one else will make those mistakes. My journals are on another board as I started it there cause I did not know this place existed. Bought the seed from here and am 8 for 8 on germination.

Any other questions just ask. Do some research. The folks here will help but if you need to ask for help use the support ticket available on the forum splash page under grow support. You will need basic information and knowledge. A lot of guys here will not bother is we have to explain how to pH freaking water or someone who thinks a 2000 watt burple light will deliver the fire.

Good luck and again just reach out for questions.
Ps look around for the tent. My Amazon has it for 319. Also the Vivosun app comes with a portal for purchasing products. If you look at stuff for a while it lowers the price or sends you coupons LOL

That’s a lot of info thank you very much!
Can you recommend a book on Amazon?

Just for fun I searched on my library app. They list several books but none in inventory.

I did about 80-100 hours of research before popping my first seed. Mostly spent on GWE and reviewing more than a few university masters thesis on Cannabis. There are a lot of videos on growing pot but the more I learned the more those videos seemed contrived and fake.
GWE is very user friendly. It has topics and pictures. It has tutorials on low stress training and high stress training of cannabis plants. The nutrient deficiency / overload pictures can help diagnose problems.
