So, I have been looking to see how people identify top shelf weed. I was curious to know whether it was just appearance and high levels of THC that put it on the top shelf. According to Cannador “Color and texture of well-manicured, tight trimmed and often sugary and stick from trichomes are consistent with high quality top shelf buds (Cannador, 2016). When I first started, I started growing outside and in my area it gets hot. The days can be long which are great for growing, but watering and outdoor elements are just too much for my location. In my first grow I couldn’t say that anything I harvested matched what I would consider “top shelf”, however it did manage to work. My first harvest smelled too much like hay and the bud didn’t have a smell like what you would traditionally recognize as cannabis. I’m currently on my second grow and I am taking great pains to make sure the environment, temperature, and humidity is well controlled for my indoor grow. I never realized how much actually goes into growing and how much care is involved. I thought you could just plant it, water it and forget it. After learning more, I found that there is so much more to getting great bud. My first grow was from some seeds that I found from some weed that my brother gave me. I noticed that it didn’t have any smell and it was very dry, but it was very effective in producing a good high and in fact if helped me with so many things. Sleeping, sex, focusing and creativity. I decided to give it a shot and grow it for myself. I would like to know what you consider top shelf. What makes the cut for great bud or does the whole plant you harvest qualify for top shelf bud?
I care more about flavor and trichome maturity then total THC. For me top shelf is smooth, well cured and well grown. Thc will get you high, lots of thc will get you really high. Nobody wants to hack and cough and be left with a taste of ash in their mouths. High or not.
Until you try that exact DNA 3 times then you can’t really tell how good it is, 1st time will almost always be the most euphoric as it imprints into your receptors the next 2 times will tell you how well you handle it post imprint. Even 2 different seeds from the same plant will have vastly different effects so unless theyre all from clones id be wary of a mixed bag of something like autos. Now as you grow more you’ll find a pattern of terp profile that tends to lead to your more favorable effects, pineapple , mango, and some lemons tend to have the fun euphoric effects i look for and with candy strains tending to be a good 2nd place with high euphoria but heavy come downs.
Now this may sound crazy to everyone here. I don’t smoke, Seriously
I take what I grow and I let my friends sample it.
Not to plug ILMG but i have only grown autos from them.
I always order the high thc strains. I have no idea if I am even getting close to what they advertise, but my buddies are sure loving it.
Not that crazy in fact i think youre the 3rd person here that said that , i dont smoke either im pure edibles, but high thc =/= best strains they just get you stoned slightly faster( and have slightly more bag appeal but if youre looking for that get natural purples)
I had the same with my recent harvest of forbidden runtz, it tastes really nice and gets you real high, but I can’t shake the smell of grassy hay, been curing almost two weeks and that smell hasn’t lifted from the buds, in the bag it smells amazing, take it out and smell the bud and it’s just hay, I have no idea what I did wrong
I don’t smoke either. I grow for my wife. She has a high tolerance to marijuana, so I consider top shelf when the buds smell good, look good, and she says it is really good. I just finished a GG auto she says is very good.
@skipper1 yeha you’re probably correct and it’s my impatient ass, it’s just cos it got so hot here for the week it was drying and it dried in like 3 days, that’s where I thought it probably messed up the terpenes, but oh well, now I know for these next lot
