How do I start clones?

I have a Photoperiod plant that is growing well, and has lots of Nuggs coming on. I want too start a clone, but when I cut off a branch and put it in water for a few days, then put it in soil, it withers and dies. What am I doing wrong?

Cloning a flowering plant is called monster cropping. It can take a while because you will have to wait for the clone to reveg.

Plants that wither and die are most often victims of overwatering.

Its a little harder to take a clone of a plant already flowering but it can be done. Vegging plants will root faster. It also takes a flowering plant longer to revert back to veg.
Are you using any rooting hormones? When you have it in water is it producing any roots before you put it in soil?

No Rooting hormones. No roots in the water.

Cloning can be tricky but it sounds like you’re not letting the clone “root” before planting it.

You need to take clean cuttings, dip them in rooting hormone and put them in hydrated cubes/plugs…or…keep them in hydrated usually with a device that sprays water on the roots.

If you want a fool proof cloning machine check out the “clone king” on amazon. It’s damn near flawless. 2 weeks in there and you’ll have a nice healthy set of roots, ready for planting.

Thank you so much.

Fun fact, you can use honey to root your clones. In my experience not quite as good as clonex but better then strait to dirt. I use local honey I get from a friend.

I have been cloning for a few years. I use a root hormone that mixes with water, 5ml For 1 liter of water. I clip the plant put it in a flower pot and add about 20ml of the root hormone everyday for a week then water. It takes 2 to 3 weeks for the roots to grow. I have had really good results.

When cloning I understand you cut the branch then cut it at a 45 deg under water to prevent a air bubble in the clone since it’s a hollow stem. Then place in a cloning gel then into water. You have more success with a air stone pumping air in the water. My friend clones constantly and this is his method and has many years of success.

Will the clone gel be a waste in the clone king? I wasnt sure if it would stay on or just get washed right off

It does get washed off, but it dissolves in the reservoir and (I assume lol) coats the stalk as they are hydrated? I have no idea if that is effective or not, but I do use the clonex gel with the clone king and have not had any adverse results so far. Anyone else know?

Ive seen they also make powder for mixing into a solution. Sometimes one works and one doesnt, i can take the alka seltzer cold and flu tablets that dissolve in water and they work wonders. Now if i take the exact same product and brand but their pill form, it doesnt do squat. :person_shrugging:
