Recap: Bag seeds, soil/river rock/mulch/coffee grounds/dried egg shells, bag seeds - mostly sativa dominant, under HPS 315watt and two LEDs 600W and 1000W. C02 DIY yeast/sugar. 4x4x6 grow box. There are about 10 plants in one large planter…
Question: Did I just cut a healthy developing cola off, or did this hermie? I had a couple others hermie at the end of veg. I forgot to turn on my space heater one evening during lights out and temp dropped into 50s and the plants drooped really hard. Came back fine - but I think that stressed them out… Trying to stay on top of hermies when multiple plants in one pot is next to impossible with LS net training.
Sorry, looks like a hermie to me.
Yep boy balls
Thanks for the confirmation. At least I did not whack a healthy cola. I don’t have any experience with managing hermies. I am pretty sure some pollen sacks opened. Is there anything to do other than keep a close eye out for more turning? Do hermies release as much pollen as males? I am two weeks into 12/12 with some really nice looking flowers, but I don’t want to waste time finishing these up if the remaining females will produce buds full of seeds. Again - thanks for the confirmation and any insights into managing hermies is appreciated - I am searching the forum now…
I have been fortunate to not have had any hermies or males (I grow feminized seeds) but my strategy for both would be early detection (frequent inspection) and immediate disposal to minimize likelihood of pollination of remaining plants.
Appreciate it, Merlin. The rest of the plant looked all female so I just lobbed off the top - the balls showed up the stem below the cola… This one is easy for me to see - I want to see if the plant shows more balls or stays female below where I chopped.
Bag seed is always a risk. They are most likely the results of a hermied parent , and those genetic hermie traits get passed on to the next generation.
They release enough to pollinate a whole grow . A tiny amount of pollen and air movement is all it takes
That is what I figured. I am pretty sure I am going to finish the grow and see what happens. Keep them until I can tell if the buds are full of seeds. I am 100% some sacks opened.
Interesting thing is that they were high quality dispensary flowers from an outdoor grow. Still could be from hermies - but the buds were perfect with actually very few seeds for an outdoor grow.
From the pic you posted I don’t see any open sacs . Unless there are others I can’t see I’d say you caught it in time.
Agreed!
I had one donthebsame thing 2 weeks in, and I plucked every ball I could see and thought I saw. As of now still growing, and I dont see any seed formation. The buds aren’t big as the other girls, but still a nice formation.
I disagree with the bag seed being herm probably…I’ve grown over 100 bag seed and never had 1 herm and only 6 males I believe it’s on the environment of the germination process favorable perfect seed conditions favor females disruptions and unfavorable low oxygen things like that favor males …hormones push female I believe as well…hormex I use every seed never get males might be my luck might not but that’s my experience and deduction
Have you checked the accuracy of your timer… if its mechanical they fail all the time digits can to but mechanicals malfunction all the time I had a light go off on a on period (good thing I run 4 big lights ) I barely noticed it if I wasent in the room I wouldn’t of known but ur light comes on in middle of night could easily do that … if not is your grow space black out dark …light leaks biggest herm trigger
It’s just not logical to me. Every single fem seed has a herm for a father, whether you make a herm by accident or on purpose where does the difference between them come from. Both herm are caused by stress and pollinated a female plant. Bag seed that is of any quality is probably grow with other female plants and that’s probably why you are lucky enough to get almost all female. Males do sneak into grow rooms and that’s why you’ll get a male seed here and there. It’s all simple logic
Dont throw your grow away. Hermies will drop just as much pollen as a male. I had one herm on me my last grow, put a few seeds in the closer branches and nugs. Not the entire grow. The weed is still potent.
Im collecting the seeds, ill try a couple. Had a random bag strain growing that is easily the most trichome rich, potent buzz ive ever had, and it definitely was not that good in the baggie. Now ive got a few seeds of it too.
I had another plant hermie on me just a few days ago. But i believe that one was because i didnt cover up the led light on my humidifier, it sat right next to it for 3 or 4 nights straight right before they went to flower. So thats probably the reason there.
Sorry for the rambling. But check anything electrical in your tent, if it has a tiny led “ON” light, cut that wire, cover it with tape or something.
Excellent - thank you. I have a crowding issue I’m dealing with too - so I just killed off the 3 herms. Out of about 15 seeds that popped - 3 hermed (2 were male) - but I did hate killing the hermed ones off - they were really healthy and full of beginning buds.
And the bag seeds were from outdoor controlled grow - beautiful buds, very few seeds, naturally pollinated = wide genetic variability. And if Darwin is right - wide genetic variability is best (just like the best dog is a mutt).
Yes - I have checked for light leaks - none. And when lights out in tent - lights are also out in the garage where the tent is… I think I stressed them by not turning my heater on heat (had it on fan mode only by accident) and temps dropped into 50s and they drooped bad…
