Hermie AGAIN :(!

This is the second time I had a hermie back 2 back different strains. The first time I thought it could have been light stress but this time I have my light 2 feet away and the plants look happy. I don’t think it’s light leaks because I check the room during lights out. Could be genetics but both of the seeds came from known seed banks (different strains). My temps are a little high at 82ish degrees but I don’t think that’s too bad. I do selectively take off leaves during flower (the whole way through flower) so that could be it but idk. The balls seem to grow near the bottom of the plants (no bananas at all just balls). I don’t know what’s up. The other thing I just found out is my PH pen was off by like 0.8 which is not good either. I feed at about 900ppm. I’m in coco and feed everyday. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Who are the strains breeders? Some good banks still have been issues. Dark Horse comes to mind…

Temps around 82 won’t really do it unless the humidity is wayyy too low or high.

Ppms being off could be the culprit. But that’ll lead to deficiency more then Bernie traits.

800 ppms is definitely not too much, u less she is a finicky eater. Do u see a lot of burnt leaves?

Pictures help…

And finally the defoil in flower is probably the most likely culprit. I never take more then 10-15 percent of the leaves off. And if I take that high a number, she is given 7-10 days to recover before I even think about removing more. Honestly I do my defoils all veg and a bit early mid flower. After that she is good to grow usually

I know that’s not a good scrog :joy:. This one was a freebie from seedsman the other one was from paradise seeds. Humidity has been a solid 45%. I think it’s cause I’m going to hard with the defoliation. I will 100% take heed to that feedback!! Thanks!!

Have you stood/sat in your tent with the light’s off to check for light leaks its the only good way to check its possible that they are sensitive genetics and aren’t stable i have 4 packs of genetics ive purchased and wont grow due to them being un stable i can grow them naturally but if i do any type of training or manipulation they herm out without hesitation unfortunately not all breeders are the same and actually work there lines

Are these autos or photos?

Yes I tested for light leaks from inside the tent. I’m good there.

That’s a photo. I’m at the top of week 4 of flower.

Hermies can happen naturally with feminized seeds, its in the genes. Ive had them hermy for no reason. Real question is, is it bad? Always on the lowers when i get them and only a random ball on a stick in one or two spots. This is y i encourage trimming the bottom third of plants.

If its not light leaks or environmental stress its genetics then and nothing you can do to avoid it impo

It’s not bad. I found like 4 one opened before I noticed. Didn’t see pollen anywhere unlike last time. I hit the others with water and plucked them off. I really don’t mind if i do have seeds just trying to get information to use moving forward.

Scary man… i just pruned mine very heavily yesterday to get them ready for flower. Im growing in an indoor tent. Im flipping them real soon, this weekend. They look stressed. I pray they make a full recovery without causing them to herm…

I believe that’s okay BEFORE flower. I was doing mine like everyday even though early flower. From what I could fine you can take leaves off in flower but not very many in one shot and most people wait until like day 21ish of flower to do it during flower.

This is what im reading up on. I am growing bag seeds. I have 6 plants that i have no idea what strain or what sex they are. I can’t believe they’re all females, So far… They are over 2 months old. I am expecting to see some seeds actually. Theres no way i got this lucky and accidentally picked out all female seeds when its a 50/50 chance i will have a male.

If balls, there’s nothing you could have done. If your plant is a true herm, meaning it has both pollen sacs (balls) and pistols growing out of different places within the same junction of the plant, then the plant does not possess standard XX or XY chromosomes. This type of herming is both unavoidable and heritable. The resulting progeny will be a mix of males and females with higher chances of true hermaphroditism.

On the other hand, when your plant grows anthers within the same place as female flowers (aka nanners), then you simply have a pure female (XX) plant with a genetic propensity to produce pollen sacs. This might sound the same, but it is not. In this case, the resulting progeny will be females that have a higher chance of growing nanners mid flower, not balls. This trait can be somewhat avoided if the plant stays below a certain threshold of stress.

The reason the use of colloidal silver is completely different is because in that case, the nanners being produced are not stress induced — the silver ions are interfering with ethylene production, causing the plant to produce both sets of flowers by hacking one of its biological processes.

Long story short, if balls, it’s always genetics. Balls do not arise from stress, they arise from the extra sex chromosome the plant carries.

Thanks all!!

Simply great info @CatDadPower.

Well stated!

This helps me understand a little better of whats going on with the plant on a scientific basis. Thank you

If anyone cares lol. I took off the bottom 3rd of the pant and I’ve been checking 2 times a day for balls haven’t found anything. I’m still a few weeks out so I’ll report back if anyone is interested.

I’ve done this before and it works surprisingly well if the herming is only occurring on specific portions of the plant (ie the lowers). Make sure to spray with regular ol’ water in a fine mist once a day. This little countermeasure really helps negate any pollen that has been released. In a 2.5lb haul, I think I only got like 4-5 actual developed seeds. Anything below the trellis net and out of direct light check VERY carefully — this is prime herming real estate.
