Help building led grow lights

Hello I’m new here and wanting to get back into growing. I was recently given two 5x10 grow tents which I would like to use. I have not grown for about 15 years now and it seems many things have changed especially with lights and I think I would light to move to using led lights. Im trying to save on cost as much as possible so I’m leaning towards trying to build my own lights. I still have not decided if I should use one tent for veg and one for flower or set both tents up for complete cycles I guess that would come down to the cost of building the lights. I see HLG have a QB132 board which they say does not require any heat sink which would also help with build cost. I’m not sure how many QB 132 boards I would need for flower and veg and if I should also use supplemental lights in the UV spectrum or far red. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

@dbrn32 is our light guy, I know he has built lights too. Mabey he will chime in when he can.

Thanks Growdoc🙏

I can help you get a build squared away. You will want to size these according to plant canopy or build out cover the entire tent. How do you plan on using?

DB will lead you well on this :flexed_biceps:t2::smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
I’ve been using his suggested light build 3-4 yrs now and love them.
Low wattage but they do the job :green_heart::sign_of_the_horns:t2:

Current run and a couple past runs

Hello thanks for your help I was planning on put 8 plants in the 5’x10’’ tent I would like light coverage over the whole tent I’m guessing the plants would be around 4’ tall. Does that number of plant in that size tent sound about right?

Wow that looks really nice thanks for sharing :folded_hands:

Yes that’s plenty reasonable plant count. Do the tents have doors on both sides?

No unfortunately they only have doors on one side. I was also planning on running co2 I’m not sure if that makes any difference to the lighting from memory I use to run around 1500ppm.

Welcome to the forum @Benno .

I wouldn’t mess with co2. If you’re planning on building with qb 132’s and no heat sinks will be hard to push that kind of light anyway. I was asking about doors because it may be difficult to reach other side of a tent that size once well into flower.

Did you see the qb-132 available somewhere? I just checked hlg and didn’t see them listed.

Check the price for 4 boards
Makes me want to build another light :person_shrugging:t2::cowboy_hat_face::green_heart::sign_of_the_horns:t2:

Awesome! Not sure why I couldn’t find them though. I feel like they were $100/set all day last i remember.

12 boards on two hlg-320h-c1400a drivers per 5x5 would be pretty solid. Normally I would probably opt for drivers with remote dimming capabilities but the models with built in dimmer are usually good for some extra current, and this would be pretty ideal application to have some extra current.

I used the search bar :green_heart::sign_of_the_horns:t2:
QB 120s was $99 for 4 and 132 was $149 :exploding_head::exploding_head::exploding_head:

Were you around when I ordered custom boards? They were basically qb 120’s but had barrel connector on one side like hlg-65. I had drivers with matching connectors and splitters to make them plug and play at 60, 90, and 120 watts. This is how smokingranny was able to diy her own light.

Sorry for the late reply the system said I reached my maximum number of reply’s and have to wait :joy: Yes it will be hard to reach across the tent in flower hopefully I will not need to mess around much during that period. I will be using co2 because the tent will not use fresh air intake or extraction. I previously used a split system in the room last time I grew but this time I will be trying a chiller coil for cooling. Would adding some supplemental lights help boost the power so i do not drive the QB132 too hard? No I do not have access to these boards I had seen them on the HLG site  There is a place in Australia that also sells led strips and boards called cutter electronics they have lots of stuff it’s just I found on forums people seem to talk about HLG more often so thought getting advise maybe easier with HLG. And cutter have heaps of different boards it is a little confusing for a novice

You will need co2 then for sure. I’ve purpose a lot of stuff from cutter, but it’s been a while. Mark is a good dude and on the cutting edge of led tech. I’m not sure what his latest and greatest modules are but I’m sure they’re legit. Mark can probably give you good applications for everything they have, but I’m happy to help if you need it.
