For those that get that strong hay smell during the dry and cure, here are 2 things that could contribute to that.
-
Nitrogen is still required in flower but needs much less once you get past the stretch. If you have the smell once you chop and you fed her with high nitrogen nutes from weeks 4 to chop, this can contribute or be responsible for that smell.
-
Drying too quickly - If the chloro does not have time to offgas and your bud is dry within a few day, it locks in that smell.

Water feed only the last few weeks can help mitigate the first one

Thankyou both for that info this is my first grow and my autoflowers are almost in 9 weeks total so 4 weeks in flower almost maybe less since im counting in preflower. When do i know or figure out when the best time is to start feeding water only

I look for the finish of the swell week 7ish of flower. I then guestimate 3 weeks remaining and start checking the trichomes with a mag glass. Their appetite will also diminish the last few weeks as well. Long story short I estimate 10 weeks of flower and start the water feed at week 8 but again the trichomes are a great indicator. When they’re all clear you can almost estimate 2 weeks left or more

Awesome thankyou so much! Im excited for this first grow ive learned so much so far and motivated to keep going. Also if you have the time (id understand if you dont) i just got a tds meter that reads ec and ppm and i was wondering if you could explain how it works, what should my numbers be going in and out in each phase, and how to increase or decrease. I tested my well water and it says my ppm is 238. Is that good or should it be much lower a friend of mine told me that whatever nutrients increases whatever my water ppm is and that i have to hit a certain spot in that/adjust. Sorry for all the questions i just know its a crucial part and id like to learn before i come across that problem. 2 of my 4 plants have some kind of problem where my buds have been in a standstill and ive flushed with no difference and i believe the meter will help me out with that

Ppms per stage
250 for seedlings
600 for veg
1000+ for flower
These are ballpark numbers.
What your friend said is if you are targeting 800 ppms in late veg and your water is 250, then you add the diff in nutes. 550.
Also those numbers above increase each week. The older she gets, the more she eats. And we pay attention to what she says.

As to say maybe my runoff is way too high how do i reduce it

If you feed and lets throw a number of 1900 ppms out there. You could let it ride and water with 300 ppms and no food and she will eat. Or you could flush and reset but that is only if she needs it.

Awesome! Seems simple enough thankyou for your help

If it keeps going up, locked out. Leaves will look really bad. Usually ph related in lockout

Good morning Grow Bro, good recommendations from @Bonjoyle. Your water source of 238 PPMs isn’t too bad. My water source is 160 PPMs and I don’t consider this as part of my feed numbers. I feed consistently around 90% of the recommended amount. You’re feeding the medium and if you’re growing in soil I would recommend a drench to drought routine with liberal run off 30% minimum when using synthetic fertilizer. The run off helps rinse the salts that accumulate from the previous feeding keeping the medium healthy around the root zone

Thankyou! I just checked the 1 that isnt doing well and she was at a ph of 5.7 and 1700 ppms!! You and @Bonjoyle telling me how to work the tds i got it to 6.4 ph and 1046 ppms now so hopefully thatll help start her bud growth back! I appreciate you guys so much

So i need to keep my runoff consistent then thats the most important. Being my first grow ive learned now theres way more factors than just watering and glad this forum has guided me in the right direction bc im sure i wouldve lost my plants by now haha. I hope you guys have a good day

Feed to run off each week after the dry cycle, let most run out and catch the last remaining sample for testing. If you’re lower than the input means they’re eating. I would feed at around 800-850 PPMs with a PH of 6.5. The PH has a range of 6.3-6.8 for soil and should be measured going in and the run off. If the PPMs are over 1000 go with a water feed next round and adjust the PH up or down depending on the run off. Make sure to discard the run off and not let the medium wick that back in, it’s full of the salts from the fertilizer and can tank your PH

Hey man i just now gave them calmag both had decent ppms so i just gave water and calmag one was ph of 6.2 and 891 ppm (runoff after feed) and the other was on the higher side but i think will be okay at ph 6.1 1056 ppm (runoff after feed) are those numbers ok? Those are my gals that are doing fantastic not the ones that are at a halt in growth

Quick question, towards the end of flowering, my main stem has good bud but all other bud is small. Can I cut the main stalk and allow the rest to grow and fill in??
Thanks. I am a new grower
