Grow Journal: ILGM Blue Dream (fem) and a bag seed!

Well after weeks of research, reading and spending money I am finally presenting my grow journal here to ILGM which has been an invaluable resource for me. I used one ILGM Blue Dream seed and a random bag seed from some high quality bud to compare. DNA/sex test pending for the bag seed to see if it gets to stay for the long run. (editors note: I have since tried germinating my remaining 4x ILGM Blue Dream seeds and nothing happened… I guess I got lucky with the first!) Well that’s my preface, here goes:

GERMINATION/SEEDLING TENT SETUP:
• 1x ILGM Blue Dream feminized seed
• 1x unknown bag seed
• 24"x24"x48" grow tent
• T5 light fixture
• Fox Farms Happy Frog soil
• rockwool starter pods
• portable humidifier

MAIN GROW TENT SETUP:
• 32"x32"x64" grow tent
• HLG 300 V2 R-Spec LED light board
• Fox Farm Happy Frog Soil
• Fox Farm Ocean Forest Soil
• Fox Farm Trio nutrients
• 5-gallon fabric pots
• 6"x16" Terrabloom carbon filter
• 6" Terrabloom inline duct fan
• 6" clip-on oscillating fan
• pH Up + Down
• pH meter
• PPM meter
• Exhale CO2 bag

  1. First I had my seeds blessed by my cat and a conjuring gang of pewter wizards. (do not skip this step!)

  1. I dropped both seeds into a jar of tap water for 24 hours.

  1. I placed the seeds in a damp paper towel and wrapped it all with aluminum foil. Placed foil on top of internet modem for warmth and left it for 36 hours.

  1. Once the tails had broken through the shells I transplanted the sprouts into rockwool starter pods which had been soaked in distilled water at 5.5pH for just about 3 hours. The rockwool pod was gently emptied of excess water and the seed was placed tail-down just below the surface and then gently covered. I wrapped the rockwool with foil to discourage algae growth.

  1. The loaded rockwool pods were placed in my germination tent under 24-hour T5 light fixture at ~80% RH, ~78F.

  1. After about 48 hours both plants had sprouted through the rockwool. I then placed the entire rockwool pod with sprout into a solo cup with drainage holes in Fox Farm Happy Frog soil and placed back under the T5 light on a 20/4 light cycle.
  2. It has been 10 days since planting into solo cups (about 2 weeks since dropping), these pics were taken today:

So that’s where I’m at! I am awaiting my DNA kit for the bag seed to determine sex (fingers crossed). I hope to grow both to flower (topping and LST) in my larger tent under the HLG 300 V2.

When should I consider transplanting them to the 5-gallon pots to place them under the bigger light? Should I top them before transplant?

Thanks in advance all!

Looks like a nice start, good symmetrical growth, no stretch; keep on trucking.

As far as transplant you could go a couple of weeks at most before tap root starts to poke through. You do NOT want to damage that so that’s my cue to pot up.

Nice presentation! Fingers crossed the unknown plant is XX.

Sweet! Good luck with these on this grow. If you still have seeds that didn’t pop, send a picture alomg with order # and describe what happened to customer service in the seed shop. They may be able to help you out.

Also, you may not need to pay for genetic testing to sex you bag seed plant. If you wait til its mature, you can take a cutting and place it into a glass of water, then put it somewhere on short light schedule like 12/12, the cutting will usually show sex in 10-14 days.

You definitely did your research.

Looks like your journal will be a fun ride!

Thanks @dbrn32-- the test is fairly cheap so I figured it would be worth it to find out as opposed to spending time and resources on a lost cause!

Haircut day! I topped the Blue Dream plant just after the third node:

Then I moved both plants into the larger tent where they will live to flower. I’ll be transplanting into the 5-gallon fabric pots in another 24-hours, I wanted to give them some time to take in their new environment and light before shocking them too much with the transplant.

~3 weeks since sprout. Both plants are on a 20/4 light cycle with the HLG light at about 65% intensity. I’ll be switching them to their 18/6 cycle very soon. Still just spray watering the soil’s top and running a small humidifier once or twice a day.

I’ve also mailed out a DNA sample for the unknown plant so fingers crossed we have a girl!

Hi guys-- having some serious drooping on both plants since moving to new tent… any ideas?

Might be ready to pot up, have you had a look at the roots? They look pretty wet, too. May just be that. They don’t need a ton of water at this age, especially after you transplant. It’s very easy to over water a small plant in a large pot.

thanks @elheffe702-- I just watered them before picture, they were a little dry before that. Haven’t looked at the roots, planning on pot transplant tomorrow.

Water logged and root bound look very similar, but in those cups it’s very easy to slide them out just a little and have a look. Give them a few hours and see if they are happier.

Looks like they are ready to be transplanted in my opinion. I just transplanted 2 last night that were just starting to get their 3rd set of leaves and I could not believe the root system

They are the 2 in the front

I honestly cannot tell if these are underwatered or overwatered. I transplanted them to larger pots and gave them each about 1/2 gallon of water a few hours ago. Anyone out there who can diagnose?

You may want to back off on the watering a little. At that age I don’t water a 1/2 gallon. My plants that going into week 6 of flower only get a gallon and that lasts for 2 days. Where did you water them? At this age the watering should be done in a circle around the plant close to the edge of the pot. You want the roots to search for the water.

That’s good advice! Looks a little water logged, but it’s probably mostly just transplant stress. Give them a few days to recover, if that, and they’ll pick right back up. But try to let the soil dry out quite a bit this go round, let them stretch out those roots. They will likely lose the sickly looking fans on there, but those new shoots (which look nice and healthy) will take off and you’ll have 6-8 branches there.
