Green Gelato Auto from RQS - Focus on Roots, Nutrients, and LST

My last few autoflower grows have produced some mixed results. From varied sizing and completion dates to lighter-than-normal buzz density, there have definitely been some interesting results that I want to continue to build on!

I learned a bit from my last autoflower (Blueberry Auto) grow, and I want to try and implement some progressive changes to this Green Gelato Auto!

My focus will be on 3 things throughout this plant’s lifecycle:

1. Experiment with products/methods to maximize Root Development

2. Find the best nutrient schedule with Ventana Plant Science, FlavUh, and Stash Blend

3. Hone in my home studio/photography for documentation

Here are some initial specifications for seeds, soil, nutrients, and grow environment:

Day 1 to 20

Focus #1: Root Structure

My last few Autos have had very lacking root structures, and by no means did they maximize use of 3-gallon pots. The root bundles were a bit sad, and I know I can do better! For this grow, I am going to use a mix of Great White, DYNOMYCO, and Mykos. DYNOMYCO and Mykos will be mixed directly in my soil, while Great White will be added at different stages early on in my watering. I added around ¾ the recommended amount of DYNOMYCO and Mykos to do my best to ensure proper support without overkill. I used Great White in full for the first few water cycles.

Focus #2: Nutrients

As I have learned in my first few attempts at Autoflowers, you need to strike a very fine balance with nutrients. Some autos don’t need anything but great soil and care, while others need to be met with specific nutrients at specific times dependents on those classes signs cannabis give. I made the mistake over over-fertilizing a previous autoflower, and I would really tell the difference in general plant health. With Green Gelato, I am going to focus on refining my nutrient process a it, keeping the first 2 to 3 weeks nutrient free (expect for my standard 1 ml/gallon Tribus, which I use in everything).

For my nutrients, I am going to be using Ventana Plant Science (I love the starter kit). These nutrients work great! Like a chef tasting for salt in a tomato sauce or stew, I will be consistently reminding myself that “less is more” and “I can always add, but I can’t take away”. Hopefully an increase in sensitivity towards nutrient feeds will prevent any issues, over fertilization, or deficiencies. It’s all part of the fun of experimentation!

Focus #3: Photography Skills

This has less to do with the actual plant growth, and more to do with some general goals and run! I love taking growing pictures, timelapses, and close-up shots of cannabis plants, they are simply beautiful in their diversity and grandeur. However, my skills are lacking.

Over this, and a few other grow journals I am producing, I want to hone my skills, as well as work on developing my workstation to produce increasingly better images. I have already made some strides in consistency and lighting as well as continued to develop my workstation to make it easier to create some beautiful pictures. As you follow this grow journal, you will be following that process as well.

Here are my first steps towards those goals in a short Day 5 to Day 20 Timelapse video for Green Gelato Auto:

What are your thoughts on my goals, and my growth thus far with Green Gelato?

Stay tuned next week to see my progress and let me know your thoughts!

Welcome to the forum. Your plant looks good. I have some Green Gelato Auto seeds on deck for my next Auto run. It sounds like you have all the right tools. You didn’t mention a heater. I run my Veg at 80f and 80% rh until flower. From my limited experience, They seem to like hot and humid. I haven’t use that soil (coco/peat blend) or that nutrient line, so I have no experience to share there. But I’m open to learn. So I’d like to follow along. Thank you for the post.

Sounds like a good organic/living soil build. A lot of life. Why 1 gallon pots may I ask? 5 seems to be a lower end for my living soils and when I do 2-3 gallon I never achieve the strong biome I want. Just me.

I live in CO. Over the last few weeks, I have definitely wanted a heater!

My wife and I have decided to focus on some financial goals for this year, so while a room-specific heater is on my wishlist, it might be a next season addition. The AC Infinity All-in-One looks cool but definitely up there for price for a personal grow.

The soil is super CO local, found it at a local nursery and it is wondeful, and I can’t say enough about Ventata Plant Science’s starter kit nutrient line. It’s breakdown along with fantatic instructions throughout the course of the grow make it easy tobuse and follow. As I mentioned in my journal, I made some over fertilization mistakes in previous runs that I hope to learn from as I continue to work with Autos.

Days 21 to 32

Hey Folks!

Green Gelato Auto is growing nicely!

I’m keeping up with my Low Stress Training (LST) and have made some good developments to my photography area. Hopefully the black surroundings will make this beautiful girl pop!

Here are some day to day highlights, and be sure to check out my ongoing timelapse video!

Jan 21: Gave the plant 500ml of pH-balanced water with Tribus. No major changes, just letting her settle in.

Jan 22: Started some LST—tamped down the main stem and twisted it a bit to get better bud site exposure. Also, said goodbye to the cotyledon leaves.

Jan 24: Water day! 750ml split between top and bottom, still with 1ml/gal Tribus.

Jan 26: Did a slight LST tweak and cut two big fan leaves to open things up a bit.

Jan 28: Another watering day, 750ml Tribus mix. Plant’s looking solid, so just keeping up with easy LST.

Jan 29: More LST—spread out some stems and snipped a couple of leaves for better light penetration. Growth is looking really nice.

Jan 31: Plant is thriving! Holding off on watering, but continuing with light LST as new stems become available.

Feb 1: Back to watering—500ml (split top and bottom) with Tribus. We’ll let the plant do some more growing before making any big adjustments.

Overall, super happy with how things are progressing. Can’t wait to see how things develop over the next week! I may be adding some Ventana Plant Science nutrients to a dose of water. If I do, I’ll be sure to share what I will be experimenting with, as one of my goals is figuring out the best nutrient levels for autoflowers.

Here is my ongoing timelapse, have a look and let me know what you think!

Great question, @Storm!

I am using 1 gallon pots for this auto as I really wanted to focus on getting fully developed roots. I ran a few previous autoflowers in 5 gallon, 3 gallon, and 2 gallon, and I had yet to develop a root development loadout that maximized the potential of larger pots. In order to experiment, I am trying a few proportions in 1 gallon pots, and if successful, I’ll move to 3 gallon pots and adjust up accordingly.

Additionally, I just grow for myself so I like to focus on smaller plants and really enjoy the training portion of it all. It’s quite fun and relaxing!

I kinda wish I did. I grow for a medical circle of friends. I am the only green thumb and grower among us. If I run out we are all out.
That is why I stay in a perpetual grow with a dedicated 12/12 tent. I personally like 5 or better because I reuse soil. The bigger pots allow me to reammend and cook before I drop another in it. Every second run a pot I put them all in my bin. Take soil that was in bin and replace. Soil now in bin gets a full reammend with perlite, epsom, worm castings, dry ammendments and recharge if needed. More worms then it sits for months cooking. Just my style. It has matured over last few years of organic growing. My friends pitch in cash for nutes, beans, electric etc. Here is all thats left right now. Curing stuff out in a week. Barely made this round. Weed was so good my buddies got greedy :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:.
Leftover

Curing

Plenty in pipeline and 1 more plant days out with 1 hanging.
