I live near the ocean and these little S***s get in sometimes, when I leave the screen door open to long. Then I gota hunt them down like a madman. I hate these guys with a passion!! I use only a little soil and a lot of worm castings in my grow and microwave the soil and worm casting a little at a time, then a little more, rinse and repeat until my pot is full. With this gnat phobia, is there any soil that rids them pre-market or anything that is less likely to have them? I soil grow only don’t have the knowledge or room for hydro.

Coco or peat dont have bugs in it. They can still be attracted into the grow but they dont have bugs in it cause it’s not real soil. One of the reasons I’ve never used soil seems like one of the negatives of it.

I use promix its peat base with perlite mixed in it.
Will write that down in the beginning if this grow journal, I take notes all the way through all grows. And will go to Peat or Coco next time thanks, I sooo hate them little *******

Yep there always seems a chance in using real soil. I read alot of folks on here fighting them more so with real soil when I was learning about all this. I’ve only used the promix never used coco but it’s similar to what I’m using.
Promix is Peat?
And alot of the mixed have beneficial fungus added to them to help the roots.

Yes its peat based they make several different mixes but I’m using promix hp.

You could also pick up a bag of ( nat-nix ) I believe it’s called…
Supposed to keep them from getting into the soil…

I do have a bag of Nat-Nix, was something I bought pre grow lol. I don’t have a gnat problem this grow, even have the yellow sticky’s…Just was hoping to get some info for next time. Seems like you all got me covered for next time.

Now you will have to use nutrients because there is nothing in the coco/peat but you have alot more control over what they get and how much. I’m becoming more interested in hydro recently might give it a go next year.

In peat or Coco there are also no nutes. Growing in coco requires a completely different watering schedule. Growing in soil you need to have a wet/dry cycle when watering. If the top inch of soil stays dry most of the time gnats usually go away. You can also put an inch or 1 1/2 inches of coco on top of the soil and it helps the top of the pot stay dry

Only on my second grow, but had them little shits on my first grow, was told it was from keeping the top of my soil wet. I used mosquito bites, yellow sticky pads and some de on top of the soil, no more fungus gnats. Good luck

Gnat nix works if you have a thick enough layer, but when you water it moves and thins out, therefore being less effective. It’s also a bit pricey.
For less money buy BTi. Bt var. israelensis ( Bti ),
It’s available on eBay for under $20 and actually works.
