I have three xtreme haze seedlings and i planted them about two days ago. Two of the seeds keep somehow getting over the soil and also none of them are growing. I keep the temp at qbout 73-78 and have them in humidity domes because the highest i can get the humidity is about 40. This is my second batch and so far none of them have properly worked, am i doing something wrong?
Have they popped through the soil or are you saying they are coming out of the soil without germinating. Pictures are really helpful, so we can see what is going on. Also are you putting seeds directly into soil or are you first soaking in water and allowing them them to crack open and produce a tap root?
I soaked them in water for about 14 hours and then germinated them in paper towels until they had tap roots about 1/2 an inch long. Theyre planted now and just not coming up
Are you saying you plant them, and then the seed ends up on top of the soil?
Yeah like i keep putting a little more soil on top to try to rebury them but they just keep coming up
That is just the shell stuck to the actual seedling. It is the plant growing. Stop covering it, the shell will fall off.
Ill make sure to stop recovering it. Ill also take pictures if it happens again. Heres what they look like now though
One of my friends told me the put holes in a ziploc bag to help wirh humidity. Do you think that coudlve been a bad idea?
You don’t have to put the holes. The bag is already open.
Also, just place the bag over the jiffy cups, don’t enclose the whole cup. Need some airflow.
Like @Borderryan22 pointed out, what you are seeing is the seedlings growing and pushing through soil. Once they emerge allow them to continue, you may need to assist removing shell, but generally the shell will fall off as seedlings start to mature.
Thank you ill be sure to do that instead to try to help the seedlings out
So next time the seed comes out i should just leave it be? I figured it was probably from it growing out i just wanted to see if it could be anything else lol
If you put the bag over the cup then put holes, it’s not going to do much for rh. The humidity will collect better in the bag just setting it on top. Basically making a miniature tropical environment for the seedling.
Yep. If the shell stays on for more than like 3 days, you may have to use tweezers to help the seedling remove it, but like @Bulldognuts said, it’ll generally fall off.
Thank you for the help . Do you have any additional tips like when to water and how much?
About 5ml every other day at first. They prefer wet dry cycles. Don’t soak. In a ring about 2" away from the stalk so the roots chase the water. This will help produce a good root system.
If you have some spare soil and a jiffy cup, fill it with dirt, and see what the weight fills like. Then get it wet and check the weight. Checking the weight of your vessel (except hydro growing) is one of the easiest ways to see if you need to water
Thank you so much, ive been struggling to figure out the watering situation lol. In the post above i posted a pic of the seed coming out, does it seem ok still?
Yep, that normal. When light begins hitting the actual plant developing inside, the cotyledons (first little oval leaves of the plant that will later be consumed by the plant itself) will open and push the shell off. If it doesn’t come off after a few days, put a drop of water on it and try to tweeze it off veeeeery gently.
Thank you so much, i was so worried lol
