First time grower in need of assistance

Hey all,

First time grower here! Hoping to soak up some information from some more experienced growers. Would appreciate any tips or suggestions. I’m also curious on how exactly a grow journal works, and if thats something I should be doing. Thanks again!

Also, my profile tells what I’m doing, and how I’ve done it thus far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to ILGM forum. You definitely should consider a journal. Being a first time grower you will probably have a lot of questions. By starting a journal you will have one place to ask questions and get answers. It will allow people to follow your grow and give advice. You can basically document your grow and be able to go back and find info about everything you have done. On my first journal everything was going well and I had put up pics of plants. Someone noticed something in pic that I hadn’t noticed. It was a minor issue but I was able to deal with it before it got out of hand. I looked at your pics and noticed that seedlings was outside. Are you growing indoors or out. Also your stems are stretching a little bit which could become a problem. That’s usually a indication that they are not getting enough light. So if you are indoors you should consider lowering light. Good luck and if you start journal tag me in.

Thanks for the info/response. So they’re currently in a bay window, and the weather has not been ideal. I did order lighting for while they’re indoors as seedlings, but the shipping has been delayed due to all the covid-19 problems. Should be arriving by Monday, should I buy something in the mean time? Also, their permanent location will eventually be outside. As for the journal. Should I just be writing down all measurements of nutrition and things of that nature? As well as taking photos as I go?

Seeds were put in soil on the 22nd.

Really, just do updates on your grow once a week or so or as often as you like. You have basically started a journal here. As far as lights, how soon can you put them outside. Hard to recommend to buy expensive lights when you intend to be growing outside. Hopefully what you ordered will get there on time. If you want to get someones attention just type @ symbol and there screen name. Like this @Tucci they will get a notification that you tagged them. Don’t hesitate to tag someone on your journal here, and invite them to follow along.

New grower here, I had the same issue with light delivery. Delayed a week and a half so my seedlings did have a little stretch but once I got them under light it made big improvement to the plants. Massachusetts weather as been 60% rain this April so the lights are like magic.

Hello and welcome to the forum looks like he’s got you off and going. You will love this forum so many growers just wanting to help everyone have best grow that they can have. I have used fox farm trio and boomerang and sledgehammer flush last 2 grows and really like them and recently got the fox farm powder trio but haven’t used enough to see yet. I also just started using recharge in the water I give them about every 4 watering. I’m going to set myself to watch your grow I really enjoy watching others grow. :sunglasses:

I’m in New York, so I’m suffing the same weather (more or less) as you. With the weather we had in march and early April, I was assuming the light wouldnt even be needed. Now we have endless rain, and more coming this week. @Bulldognuts I’m curious if either of you have used CFL lighting? From what I’ve read it seems to do fine in the beginning stages of growing. The daylight ones is what I was thinking, just until my light arrives.

I haven’t, I’m going to tag @dbrn32 he’s the lighting guru. He can answer questions about what you can do until lights arrive or you can get plants outside. @dbrn32 can you help @Tucci out on CFL or something he can do until lights arrive.

Welcome to the forum!

How many party cups with plants do you have? Cfl’s in 5000k will work, but you may need a couple of them

I really appreciate all the help. This forum seems like a great environment. Now I’m even questioning whether the light I bought was even right. Yeah, the solo cups are a bit shabby for sure, but I’m for sure giving it a solid go. I have 5 total, all are just under a week. I’m really new to everything. I’ve been reading as much as possible, but theres so much information. Also, i did purchase a PH meter, but I’m still a bit confused on the process. Thanks for all the help guys. Also, heres a screenshot of the light I had ordered. Sorry if I don’t respond right away, I’m only able to respond a certain number of times!

Nothing wrong with party cups, most of us use them. The light you ordered will probably work for seedlings, but not really best thing you could’ve purchased.

If you had something like a multi way bulb splitter and daylight or cold white (usually around 5000k-6500k) cfl’s will do it. I would look specifically for the 23 watt variety or larger. 3-5 of those should keep plants alive and well for a few weeks. You could do same with led bulbs and diffusers removed.

If you’re into the DIY scene, you could also source higher end led modules from electronics distributors.

Awesome, so Ill just go with the CFLs for the time being. They’re just super affordable for what I need at the moment. Thanks again for all the help guys! I’m open to any suggestions you have along the way. I’ll purchase the CFL lighting today with a multi way bulb splitter

@dbrn32 would these do the job?

Or is the wattage too high on these?

Those should be the 23 watt bulbs I mentioned. You can check description to be sure, but as far as I remember 23 watt cfl is 100 watt incandescent replacement.
