you’re welcome! please keep updating this thread so we can see how it’s going
So, the hairs on the GSC buds are starting to change to brown. Here’s an overview and the closest pic I can take. Any thoughts on how much more time?
I took the girls down last week, there were a few spots of bud rot, presumably due to the cooler weather and shorter days. I felt it didn’t make sense to keep going and risk the entire crop (of three plants). The trichomes on the GG were around 30% amber, the GSC a little less so. I could only approximate these values because I would need a microscope to get a confident feel based on my limited experience. The pistles were 95% brown, and I tried the GSC the prior week for affect, with positive results .
I cut out and disposed of anything that looked like rot, in some instances where there was some spreading, I cut the entire limb and disposed. In total I’d estimate around 30% disposal rate.
The denser buds, generally on the GG seemed to be more affected, but there was a couple sections on a few of the GSC. my guess is the looser bud structure of the GSC may it a little less susceptible to mold.
The remaining plants I took down in branches or sections of plant, after removing all the shade or water leaves. I also did a mild trimming of remaining leaves to improve air circulation, but not a full wet trim.
For drying, I hung what I could fit in the basement shower, where I had a small fan and a/c and a dehumidifier. The plants in the shower dried quickly; a little too much so for me, ready to jar up in about 4 or 5 days. I put them in a large cooler to slow them down, but I didn’t like them stacked in there.
The bulk of the plants went into my yard shed with the windows open and a fan. Humidity was low and temp cool for most of last week, so I got lucky there. A side effect of drying in the shed is a daily increase and decrease in the moisture in the buds. In the AM they are measuring about 14% with my amazon wood moisture meter., and 6/7% on most afternoons.
I have found that 7% moisture in the heart of the bud on the wood meter is yielding around 60% rh in the jars, so that seems like a reliable method of estimating when to start the cure. Sometimes though the buds are a little drier or more moist, which I came up with the technique below.
I did a closer trim of the buds before going into jars. I I removed all remaining leaves withe stems and cut the sugar leaves close to the buds. It’s not high grade trimming as there turned out to be way more bud as a result of these autos reverting to photos, and I was moving quickly to get these into jars and get better control of their environment. I also noted most of the buds are pretty fluffy, not dense. I’m guessing it’s due to limited light in the yard in Oct . Once I began to understand the rapid change in moisture in tge buds, I started to try to time my trimming sessions for a time of day, and rh level. Of course sometimes I just went it it when I had time.
As noted above, I noticed the moisture level in the buds can change pretty quickly with the humidity in the air. What I started doing for curing is opening the jars which are a little low in humidity outside in the morning, allowing them to absorbed moisture from the air. The jars which are too high I open in the house. Most of my jars are steady at between 60% to 62% after a day or two.
I have performed initial ttess of the GG and GSC for effect, they both taste GREAT, but the GG is the best tasting bud I have ever vaped. Period.
The GSC is second. All the other commercial bud I have vaped is a far far less quality experience . The GG high is very calming with very little couch lock or sleepiness. There is not much euphoria. Very chill, nicely done. I don’t feel much improvement in the high with alcohol, just a little more subdued. My wife says she barely notices that I am high. The GSC seems mildly euphoric, good cerebral high, with a little energy elevation. There is some mild anxiety, but not to rhe level of paranoia. The energy seems to go better with a little alcohol, nd would be a good high for a party or concert. The wife definitely knows I’m high with the elevated energy and talkativeness.
Here are a few pics.
