Exactly what I have done. Just about to finish the last two.
So I ended up with 3 good top clones and 3 slightly lower - and smaller. Thought I’d try them before tossing them
All three girls are now topped - pretty close to the same height. Not quite sure what to expect because on my clones, the nodes are staggered (offset) up the stem, so my cut ends up above one bud site - not two.
Do I miss out on the split to two colas in my case? Is my only effect topping?
The cloning went pretty well. I have three top clones and three minor clones in their tent with domes and moisture in about 27C If the three tops take I will be thrilled - the lesser ones are quite a bit smaller - but there was no sense in binning them yet.
The clones are now going under 72 hours of light and warmth.
Should the lids be lifted daily to freshen the air in the domes???
Thinking I will see how the girls look in a week and set my mesh…
@beardless @Davyg @Cannabian
I’m gonna tag along, that is if you don’t mind. Looking good my friend

Definitely! The more knowledge and input I can get - the better my results will be. So much to learn on the fly!
I welcome all comment and input from everyone!
I scanned through your journal gonna go back and read a little more. I’ll tag you into my journal, can’t remember if I have already done so, if so, sorry for the second tag ![]()
Please do! I’m not sure who I am following.
Would love to see what you are doing!
Your comment welcomed - there are a couple of questions at the end you might be able to cover for me.
For new growers who don’t want to top or fim, you can just bend the plant over to expose lower branches to more light…![]()

Yes - I gave that a lot of thought. I was tossing up if just lst would get me where I wanted to be. Beiing sativa, I knew height would be a challenge. I decided on topping because I wanted them to expand and strengthen up - hoping that its vertical targets head horizontal. Added bonus of the clones that I wanted to kick off. I will definitely be using lst to organise it better - the offset nodes on the clones tend not to line up.
Thanks for the input though - will be great to do a comparison grow next round!
@repins12 , I’m not sure what topping will give me on clones with nodes staggered, will I still get the double cola?
Yes, anytime you top the end result will be 2 new branches at the top even if nodes are staggered. Your not talking about topping the new clones that you just made are you? You need to hold off on that until they get established/rooted, don’t want to cause excessive stress while it is trying to establish a root system
Dang @Budz420 you’ve been busy.
Nice to see hard work in action!
Cuts look nice, just following along and enjoying the show.
Cheers Mate!
Thanks @repins12
No, only topping the three growing mothers. The clones are as much a test as anything. I only have my tent to flower in - so I will need to hold them back or pick one and nurture to clone again later.
It didn’t make sense to me how the two could appear. It makes sense on a seed because the notes grow in pairs - opposite each other. I can see splitting two into four at the top. But in my case, I am cutting above one branch - not a pair. One to four doesn’t make sense to me.
Thanks mate. Just trying to get my head around the effect on a clone rather than a seed grown plant with @repins12. I can’t see one turning into four lol ![]()
You’ve inspired me with all your dang cloning Budz hahha.
This is from one of my micro buds. Gonna try a fully outdoors clone. No dome, just sun and sky. Might and prob will die, but gotta just gotta try stuff
@DankBank22 That is part of the reason I started taking my clones so early - apart from having a safety net. I thought I could play with them a bit in veg - try stuff. I have to hold them back anyway due to one tent. It will let me know what I am capable of - with a minimal risk/ maximum gain view to it.
The girls still seem very perky after the major haircut!
Still not watered them yet - letting them dry out a bit first.
Okay so
You topped at the red mark. The two branches marked in blue will now become your 2 new main vertical growth tops. Now if you top the 2 marked in blue, you will end up with 4 main branches of vertical growth.
You can also top lower branches and each one of them will then split into 2. It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. On my outdoor guerilla grows, whenever I went up in the hills to check on my plants, I pretty much pinched every top that I could see off. Does that make any more sense my friend?
@DankBank22 Nothing ventured, nothing gained, that’s my motto
Excellent explanation!!! @repins12
What I find amazing is even with one topping, the plant scrambles so hard to push that upper growth back up, not only can she produce 2 new Colas from the topping, she can actually produce many many more. I’ve seen stories of up to 6-8 Colas from one topping. The plant goes a little haywire pushing out those colas, and ends up branching out more all on its own.
I got 3 top Colas from one topping. Can’t wait to see these bad girls grow!!!
Go Budz Grow!
@repins12 - excellent! Now it makes sense! I wasn’t considering them a pair - they are - but offset.
The aim is/ was to SCROG - hence the desire for width. I was only going to top once, put in a screen and guide them through - before tying them down. It seemed like the most efficient use of space - but my mind can always be changed by somebody that has fallen down this hole before.
Pictures help so much!!!
Awesome man, yeah, we all have to leave room for trial and error. Just remember to not let the clones get too dry. Now that they are separated from their water supply, they only have their tiny leaves and little stems to sustain themselves.
I’ll shut up…you know what you’re doing!
That is crazy! And yes - I was surprised- they haven’t even skipped a beat - they are just looking for light. If I want to start guiding or tying branches to aid the spread, lots of bud sites - is it best to wait and let them get over this completely first? I as thinking wait a few days to a week before any gentle persuasion… thoughts @DankBank22
