Hey everyone, I’ve just got into growing and have already had more failed attempts than I can count. Im having trouble getting plants to survive past the seedling stage and I’m really not sure what I’m doing wrong.
This last round made it the furthest but I think they’re both dead or dying now. Both of the plants are about 3 weeks old but very small. I think the plant on the right experienced some light burn a week ago and hasn’t recovered since…not sure it will. The one on the left had stunted growth from dehydration but bounced back and was doing fine until last night when it just shriveled up. Not sure what caused this since nothing changed?
Im using a 3’x3’ grow tent, keeping humidity inside the tent around 65%, light is 24” from plants, VPD stays around 0.8, and I’ve positioned the fan just above the tops of the plants so they don’t get wind burn, and they’re on a 20/4 light cycle. I’m using ocean forest soil which I’ve now learned can be too hot for seedlings so I’ll be switching to happy frog for this next round. Then transplanting to ocean forest when/if they get past seedling stage. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, any advice would be a huge help.
I’ve attached pictures from the last few weeks. Most recent ones from this morning are the last attached.
I would mix ocean forest and happy frog 50/50. I would also put clear solo cups over seedlings and use a spray bottle to wet the soil a little every couple days as needed. The solo cups will hold in the heat and moisture. A seedling heat mat will help as well. Good luck and welcome to the community.
Watering of the soil should be avoided if using a Solo cup done. If using a humidity dome, the plant can get all of the water it needs from the humidity in the dome. A dome is actually a really good option.
Thanks, I’ve got a spray bottle that I mist them with twice a day. Once in the morning and again in the evening about 4hrs before the lights go out. I took pictures after watering except for last ones so they look a bit wet.
I’ve been doing about 5-7 sprays per plant per watering. Just measured this and it equates to about 7ml of water. So 14ml per day. Is this too much?
Seedlings only need a few ml of water per day. Direct spraying of the plant foliage should be avoided. It invites more problems than it offers in benefit. The only time a cannabis plant should ever be sprayed is if absolutely necessary to treat mold or bug problems.
I’ll try a humidity dome to see if that helps. I’ve seen a lot of people say that auto flowers shouldn’t be transplanted. Would you recommend starting them in their final fabric pots or trying again in the smaller pots then transplanting?
A lot of auto growers put their plant directly in their larger pot, permanent home. Transplanting induces some stress and stressing autos should be avoided since they may flower early. It’s not good to stress a flowering plant, and you have no control of when an auto may flower.
Thanks for letting me know that. It’s something I’ve done since my first grow and I got that information somewhere but there sure is a lot of false information out there that can do more harm than good
Alright so a bit of an update. I’ve got an AC infinity humidity dome kit with lights. I got this setup to try and finally get past the seedling stage. I planted these seeds about a week ago and this is the growth so far.
My concern is that since they’ve pierced the soil there hasn’t been much growth. The leaves have remained the same size. They don’t appear to be stretching too much either. I haven’t watered the soil since planting but it’s gotten wet from humidity. I put about an 1/8” of water in the tray to create humidity and the mugs have 4 holes in the bottom of each so should be draining. I’m wondering what’s going on? Any advice/thoughts?
