Here is a very easy way too remove old roots from expanded clay grow stones. Since they will float. I put about 10-12 inches of water in a large tote, and then put about 2-3 inches of the root encased stones on top of the water. Stir the top of this gently a few times in about 24 hours. The roots will become waterlogged, and sink to the bottom of the tote.
After a day or so just dip the stones off the top of the water, place them somewhere to drain. I used an old bucket that has a cracked bottom, (I know all of y’all have one these also).
