@Packof3 Plants are looking great! Any advice you would offer for a first time grower with a similar climate?
When did you start your ladies or have you? I started mine indoors on Feb. 14th. I’m fairly new as well. 3rd summer growing. I don’t mess around with nurltrients too much other than I do feed them but not too techy that way. I just watch how they are responding to whatever I’m doing. I topped my girls early, trying to max the number of colas. These ones are very different this year. Just some seeds I got out of some bud. Can’t recall the strain so calling it Mystery 1. Last year I grew horizontal, did alot of LST and Supercropping but said I’d just let them go this year with little manipulation. I check them in the morning and evening before dark. Right now I’m giving them about 4 gallons of water mixed with some “grow/veg” nutes once a week. Seems to be working. They are in full flower which is wierd but in think it’s due to when I pulled them outside. They were under 18 hours of light/ 6 hours dark so I think when I brought them out in early May the days were short and they flipped to flower. Kinda went back now to a veg state. Like I said I’m fairly new so the last 3 years have just been experimenting. Got about 12 Large mason jars of decent mugs last year so not doing too bad. That got me and the Fam through to about March so didn’t have to buy and it was pretty good. Didn’t lose any colas to bud rot last fall so that was great. Can’t say the same for the previous year. All the top colas were full of bud rot which would make a grown man cry. My recommendation would be to not overthink it. These are at the end of the day weeds and have grown without mans intervention for centuries. Just watch em grow and learn from what they show you. One thing is if you happent to get a male toss that fucker (far away) as soon as it starts showing signs. I had 1 that I had toss this year. Shoot me off some pics of your grow.
Yeah, pure green horn presently, i’ve been working off the basic plant husbandry knowledge, internet research and common sense. So under that guise please don’t be too hard on me
The ladies, 2 ( Fem’d so no worries) were sprouted and went into solo cups on May 24th; later I would if there were any planning involved, but this was went the “project bell” went off in my head lol. Now in 2g pots maybe 6" tall and growing quick.
Not over thinking things is a good moto to follow, i’ll try to work by that.
Sorry for jumping into your thread, I just wanted to get your input. I have pics and can elaborate, but rather than further invade your thread, is a ‘grow log’ the appropriate venue do you think?
Yeah, no worries, just wanted to get some conversation going with whomever to see what others are up to in the general area or similar climate. I think I got lucky with these “Mystery” seeds as I’m very happy with how the ladies are doing. Just realized this morning while checking on the girls that I need to start feeding them some Bloom nutes (Plant-Mod MJ Bloom). My little ladies are still in solo cups outside, seem to be taking forever to establish. Like watching paint dry. I’ll likely be a little more on the ball with that grow as I will move them inside this fall to finish off their bloom phase. Let me know if you have any questions. Like I said, I’m new to growing but have done quite a bit of research. I’ll help with what I can. Feel free to ask whatever.
Appreciated thanks . I’ll write up a grow journal for mine shortly and tag you.
Looks like you’re finishing in 15g pots, and using soil, correct? Curious to know a bit more about what soil you’re using and what you might have added to it.
Also, approximately how many hours of direct sunlight are they getting?
If I’m reading your tags correctly, your solo cup girls are roughly the same age as my two ladies. This is excellent as it gives me a general frame of reference.
My soil is a mix of compost, and some triple mix. Amended with some bone meal and a bit of Plant-Mod Grow. They are outside now all day. Just put them in some gallon pots today with some Promix BX. They are tiny (just starting on the 3rd node) but they seem to be liking the full sun, so full sun it is.
Kind of similar is what I’m doing. If ya wanna throw in your advice I’d love to hear it go to the outdoor section and find “Kansas First time outdoor” anything is appreciated guys!
Switched the ladies to some “Bloom” nutes this evening when I watered them. They are in full flower so want to see how they respond this early in the season. For me it’s all trial and error. I just observe their response and adjust accordingly.
I ended up with 5 that survived all the squirrels in the yard. Put them back in under my grow light (18/6) for the next couple of days as the weather is windy/rainy. Once it clears back out they go. They are at about the 3rd node now. Taking forever to establish, but even just today under they grow light they seemed to stretch a bit.
Ladies got a defoliation today. Opening up for some added air flow and so I can watch for pests such as aphids a little better. Followed by a good watering and feeding with Bloom nutes.
This one is stacking up nicely but a long ways to go. The other 5 are further behind for some reason, but coming along.
Babies are coming along nicely. Had to bring them back in to the garage as the squirrels got into them on Thursday afternoon and ripped 3 of the 5 out of the ground. One didnt survive but the other 3 bounced back.
@Luckyrider How are things going in the garden?
@Packof3 So you take off most of the leaves from the lower half of the plant? For outdoor plants this is usually done during the flowering stage to force activity upwards to the buds, right?
I didn’t realize squirrels were tempted by these plants, glad to hear that most recovered. These were planted in late May if I recall correctly, so they’re roughly the same age is mine. I’m surprised by the apparent difference, so maybe they’re younger?
@Unicron that’s kinda my logic. Seems to work. Took off all the fan leaves, but the bottom and inner canopy had been previously stripped out. I see it as more light to the flower sites, and unobstructed air flow to be a good thing. They are well established and finished veg so I believe the Bloom nutes should drive energy/food to those bud sites. I’ll keep you up to date with picks as to how the colas are building. Fingers crossed from my end.
My 4 little ones will stay inside under light for another week or 2 until they get a little bigger (5-7 nodes) then they will be moved outside in their finishing pots, and some cages around them to keep the pesty squirrels out.
@Unicron oh and the squirrels dont eat them, they just like to dig in the pot to bury nuts. My plants are in my neighbors yard and they feed everything from squirrels to raccoons to birds. The squirrels seem to like to bury nuts and then dig them up later. Buggers!
@Packof3 Ah okay, that makes sense. Hate those little bastards regardless, but if they’re getting fed… at least they’re not climbing the stems to eat your buds. Thankfully I don’t have any feeders in the area so no temptation hopefully…
Pretty clueless to the forum thing. I just tried adding you to my grow journal. I update it weekly. I’ve been reading a lot around here and comparing photos of different grows, sometimes I look behind the curve and other times I’m encouraged. On the whole I’m pretty happy with how this new experience is going. Weather for us has been outstanding, assuming the same for you.
@Luckyrider yeah can’t complain about the weather for sure. I was looking back at photos from my grow last year and I’m stoked as last year my girls were pretty small that the time, and my ones from this year are in full flower and huge (to my standard anyways.
This was last years grow at the end of June
Following is how I trained those plants once they matured a bit.
And this is how they looked late in flower
@Packof3 I can see why you’re happier with this years grow. If I end up with anything close to your last years then I’ll be quite happy.
Not knowing how my autos were gonna do I have been very timid about fussing with mine. Next year I will get much more serious about lst etc. Yours from last year are impressive and something for me to strive for!
