Duke's Grow Room Build Out

So i tried to start a grow room about 10yr ago and life got in the way. I am back to it and excited!
I am on the 2nd floor. I currently grow in a 4x4 tent but have been clearing storage out of our house and will convert into a grow room or rooms.

The thing that I am questioning currently is the limitation of my “storage” room.

  • My Storage Rooms height is only 5’ 11". Can i use it to flower? Do I need to increase the ceiling height or lower the floor for lights?

This room opens from my bedroom and is over our kitchen.

This is what is directly under the room, the kitchen ceiling.

this is a sketch of the house with the bedroom and storage room connected.

Here is a view of total restate I’m working with. The Storage room is 19ft long by 9ft 4in wide by 5ft 11in high.

Here is a side view of what the room looks like. I had to design it in a app because im still clearing everything out lol.

I am still clearing it out and starting to rip up carpet.

I really like your CAD program, what is it?

depending on how you plan to grow this is sufficient for most indoor growing techniques…do you run out of room in your 4x4 tent during flower?

it is called “Room Planner”. its an app on from apple store on iphone. I’m using the free version which is limited.

I have yet to completely flower in my tent. im on day 59 White Widow, ak-47 Autoflower.
but i aleady feel cramped in the tent

Right now would be the time to lower the floor or increase the ceiling height by 1’ or 2’ ft.
My other option is Flower in my closet or put up a temp wall in bed room and lay a grow tent out flat as a wall.

I plan on growing max amt i can. all i do is sleep and get on computer in my room so i want to deck it out as my man grow cave.

I have a 4x4 and 3x3 in a bedroom…I had to take the exhaust fan and carbon filter out of the tent and place on top of the tent so I had the room inside I needed if I got a tall girl

if you plan to only grow auto’s then as a general rule they rarely get over 4 feet tall, most stay below 30 inches

I forgot to list my goals lol.

  1. Have a perpetual harvest.
  2. max amount of growth for space without feeling like a mouse in a maze.
  3. easy of use ! this is big i want to do the work now and make growing easy from now on(easy as possible).
  4. Have fun on my DIY project and share.

I have the 3 rooms/spaces . bedroom / storage / closet.

  • i want to install a wash basin or large sink that drains directly out of the house and dumps on side.
  • i want to install a floor drain incase of floods.
  • i will be running water line
  • electrical is done. as far i a can foresee.
  • also Vertical Farming, i was wondering if that is do-able with 10’ ceilings.

To Be Less Confusing:
What do yall think about the 5’11" height in storage and limitation for flowering?

exactly enough for me to hit my head on.
I always seek out short stocky growing strains if I can. There are some very nice and heavy 2.5’ plants so I see no prob with 5’11 space

I like it, and will tag along if you dont mind. Depending on how you train them the height should be ok. With perpetual harvest i assume your growing auto flowers and those tend to be smaller. At the same time if you can do it i would increaee the height, would hate to regret not doing it.

There are some pretty amazing cultivators on here that can show you basically how to take a 5’ plant and stick it under a 3’ net. I personally am still learning these and am not the best person to ask.

I have a grow room in my basement, but i like to grow huge photos, I just love seeing huge bud plants, and get about a pound per. I have an 8’ ceiling down here and mine is about 40 x 14. In the center i built a 110 gallon hydroponic recirculating deep water culture.

On about day 21 from planting seeds.

My light wouldn’t be good in the 5’11 flower room, it’s a hot-running cheap blurple and I always leave at least a foot above it, scared to push it right into a ceiling. One of them thin profile lights or detachable drivers now different story

DUDE NICE BUILD! do you have a forum thread on here where you built it?

Yeah im thinking i need to extend the height. I have the main bedroom i wash thinking about putting a wall up. i have 9ft ceiling here.

then i have a closet i can use with 9’ celling , but it has width limitations. room is 5x5 with 9’ ceiling but there is a slant that follows the roof.

Man what are some of the main things that made your job easier? like wash station , drains, etc… that i should be installing first?

I have the Commercial Vertical Farming lights by HLG. I have the Diablo Scorpion and 350R Diablo. So if i can a fan over them i wonder how close i could run them to ceiling?

Looking for images and descriptions… googleing

They look slim and I think those board types with them good diodes don’t get as hot as mine. I know if I had one of them types I would get another foot out of my tent.
Edited to say, I think those are the ones that don’t have built in fans, bercause they dont need them. A couple inches or whatever you need to reach your hands in there.

yes they are passive cooling. i have a fan on the diablo in 4x4 and its almost cool to the touch.
there is a good 18"in above it though

Im currently planning to upgrade to either the new HLG Scorpion lights, or Mars Hydro FC 6000. I do have a grow journal, but i didnt document the build because I actually discovered the forum after. I am on grow #5 currently.

I dont have a water outlet down here, so i use a carbon RV filter on my hose and fill a plastic 25 gallon trash can. The dehumidifier i rigged to drain into the trash can also and this serves as my convenient water source. I have a 650 GPH pond pump and some 1/2 " tubing, i plug it in and fill a 5 gallon bucket. All my top ups are in 5 gallon applications.A water line and drain will be very helpful, a worktable and storage cabinet for nutes and stuff also helpful.

I also ran a old hot tub 50 amp 220 line in there, but only used one phase and ran 110, so each light had it own outlet above where it hangs. When i upgrade my lights im going to purchase them wired for 220 and use that. The lights pull some amps so a good dedicated breaker is ideal if your going to have a lot “i have 6”.

I also am a black sheep here and do some things differently like activly filter the nute solution, add fish tank bacteria to keep it clean, and never change my res water the entire grow just phase in and out diffrent stuff for flower.

Some pics of the plumming -

Inside res 2000 gph recirc and 1600 gph chiller pumps

1/2 HP chiller and 900 GPH Aquarium Canister filter.

Outer res, 3/4 " PVC hose fill inlet, plumming for chiller and recirc line side.

Outer res back 3 " main drain return line. 3/4 " Main Feed line.

13 gallon bucket 3" main drain, 2" bypass

1/2" PVC to 1/2" NPT quick release feed lines.

Old thumpy 6500 GPH air pump with 12 outlet manifold.

40 liter dehumidifier

The Cheif 5 gallon cool mist humidifier

If you have the abilty to get more height i would definitely do so. 60" isnt really alot. But with strain selection and training techniques you can make it work for you. I run a few HLG lights (Scorpion Diablo and 3 350R’s) you can safely run them 12" from your canopy. And as far as how close to the ceiling, as long as you have a fan blowing across the board and driver you can run it as close as you want, imo.

Just your plumbing alone looks great man!

So i think spider farmer had them but Samsung had a new led that is specific to plant growth “Samsung’s innovative plant-centric spectrum LED”, (i believe thats what i was looking at) . i wanted to get some lights with those running there new leds . because the diablo isnt built with them.

i am getting by ok electrical wise but i have thought of installing a sub panel breaker box in my room. did you do a subpanel or anything? i have a 220v line powering the diablo now, it has a water heater on the line also but i don’t see any issues so far. there is another unused 220v line i will tap if i see any problems.

OKAY SO i have like 9 aquariums and a 20 gallon sump.
i have to be honest i havent look up shit about fish shit haha. I have everything i need to do a system like your res.

What is the gauges hooked to your pvc coming off your res? Also i never thought about filling the res with water from the dehumidifier! is that good? i guess it would be mineral free?

:+1: thats what i was thinking with the lights.
what height would you shoot for if you could pick the height?

  • i was imagining making a small box to house the lights. the length of the flower footprint i want for the room and a exhaust out the top.

I have 2 other rooms tho… what do you think about flowering in main room using storage for veg and closet for clone? or have clone and veg in storage and do 2 stage vertical in main bedroom?
see im trying to design this room and the others. so if i can utilize this room for something and flowering would be better in another room… i dont have to do anything with the ceiling in the storage room.

Its a water flow meter to measure how many gallons ive filled the system with. Then i used this to make 5 gallon increments on the inner res wall with paint marker so i knew when to add top up and how much, keep track of how much water plants are drinking. Also have marks for where bottom of the net pots are.
