Doing the Deed - 1st Plant Harvest - Questions

I have a few questions before I pull the trigger. I’m harvesting my 1st White Widow Auto (HGCC) TODAY :sunglasses:. I have too much amber showing on the plant, but so be it (sleepy time goodness).

So here are my questions @Retiredoldguy @Reed71 @CurrDogg420 @LongtimeListener_FirsttimeCaller @Highwayman420

  1. Can I cut buds/branches rather than the whole plant (to hang) – to see if smaller colas will grow more? Or isn’t it worth it? Just cull, dry, cure and be happy (should be a song title)
  2. Do you like to wet or dry trim and why?
  3. When you trim the buds what do you do with your trim? (freeze it, dry it, Levo it)
  4. When you weigh (before you dry) – do you measure the whole branch, plant, bud?

Blessings my friends. Have a wonderful Sunday afternoon. Headed to the outside veggie/flower garden for a while.

Absolutely.

A lot of folks do this but I’ve never seen any real gain when I tried it.

It depends on conditions and how the plant looks. I just used a bowl trimmer for the first time and will continue to do that as most of us hate trimming. Usually I’ll go in and remove a bunch of leaves a week or so ahead of harvest just to cut out the tedium.

I remove the big fan leaves and save sugar leaves and larf to go in my Source Turbo. You can do edibles in oil with it too if you like.

  1. I cut off the top colas and let buds below grow with more light for a couple of weeks. Why not?
  2. I do wet trim. I’ve always heard you waste less trichomes this way. It’s stickier, but that’s what I’ve heard from the majority so I do it that way.
  3. I am interested to hear seasoned vets chime in on this one. I am curious what do with it as well. I usually just burn it, but I feel that’s a waste so this time around I am going to do more research.
  4. Just the buds. You’re not smoking the branches, right?:joy::joy::joy: Your dry weight will be basically 25% of your wet weight.

Hahaha you’re probably right about the underneath growth not really benefitting, but I still do it!

What’s a source turbo?

It’s a tabletop distiller to reduce alcohol tinctures down to oil for dabs or edibles.

There’s 5 grams of dab oil from the first QWET run, from 30 grams of DT/C99 flower.

That is straight awesome.

I harvest the whole thing, and wet trim. Just easier to trim to me. I also do a bud was after trim. I throw my trim in the compost bin. If I weigh wet, I weigh with the buds on the branches like I’m going to hang them. You’ll lose 75 to 80% of wet weight.

@GrnyGrows you can dry it anyway you can it’s what ever makes it easier on you as long as you slow dry it .i perfer putting all the sucker leaves dry also for butter and i let sugar leaves on let dry but i have homemade shacker it pulls all the dry off

My thoughts are right about here. I’ve left the lower colas to grow but in hopes of achieving more ripened trichomes, not really any notable bud growth/weight gain. Only other reason I would do it is if I were making seeds. Longer on the plant is a more developed seed for germinating later.

Bam – this is all where my head is at. I just don’t feel like I’m going to get more from the plant if I selectively cull. Have three to harvest over next 10 days. It’s going to be fun.

I picked up a LEVO II and I’m loving infusing everything. I just can’t let precious parts go unused.

Tell me about the homemade shacker ?shaker – intriguing

U can but to be honest I’ve only really noticed when partial harvesting that the tricomes mature more and the buds really don’t get any bigger but more matured for better taste and smells ect.

I like the more mature angle. Doesn’t hurt for me to keep them in the grow room a while longer – and quality is a wonderful thing. Plus, I think it will keep me from screaming in pain as I cut those first few colas away from my baby. Shadrack is #1 of the #1 grow. There will never be another one of her. Dang – that’s so cool.

God bless Shadrack and her bounty :champagne:

I broke down a couple of weeks ago and spent $150 on a bowl trimmer. We ran two plants through it last week and instead of half a day per plant it was more like 45 minutes. Most of that was hand trimming the big tops just to keep them intact (I like big buds, I cannot lie). All of the smaller stuff went into the bowl trimmer for 15 seconds and done.

Beautiful garden grny.
I cut and hang main branches. I remove anything with long stems before hanging them.
I prefer dry trimming. There are only a few leaves to deal with after drying. Trim up the buds to take off most of the sugar leaves or I also use a canna brush. I cure the sugar leaves separately.

Dried and in the trim bin

I used scissors on this pile

A jar of sugar leaf trim

Fabulous…

I won’t say I’ve “never” smoked stems – in times of dire need. Don’t now – but then you never know.
