So what I ended up doing, was basically just flushing my plants, because when there was feed water in the plant, the low pH at the root zone, mixed with the nutrients was creating sulfur of some kind because my whole grow tent smelled like sulfur, so I rinsed all of the nutrient water away. We’re just pH Calmag water And I’m letting them dry out I purchased some dolomite lime powdered version and I’m going to top dress with a few tablespoons of that. I know it takes a week or two for it to start taking effect but I think if I baby the plants and keep them in veg they should bounce back. What do you think?
I do not have any sledgehammer, but I’m definitely gonna be getting some
@Covertgrower isnt sulfur smell associated with anerobic soil?
@Budbrother probaby has better experience with soil.
It could be, but I don’t really know.
If your soil stinks, then it’s most likely overwatered and has gone anaerobic. The smell would be a mass die off.
The last time I watered it before the smell happened was a week prior with a gallon of water in a 5 gallon fabric pots and I keep the fans going and the temperature controlled with ink bird it happened. When I thought I needed to feed the plants so I gave them feed water and about an hour later, maybe even less the smell was coming from the top of the plants new growth, but wasn’t coming from the soil. That same day I flushed the plant because I was worried they got overfed, and the smell went away anyone ever see this happen before
1 gal into a 5 gal pot is a lot. Well above field capacity, in most cases, but I don’t know your plants. This could be reasonable in transition - wk3.
If you watered and the smell came from the buds, you’re probably smelling terp profile. Then you flushed? Seems like a lot more water to hit it with.
They are still in veg I haven’t flipped them yet and really I didn’t know that 1 gal of water was too much there in fabric pots and usually only get a little runnoff
I run living soil, so I don’t water to runoff; and always keep 55% moisture in veg. I also rarely fully dry my pots out. Different grow style, so I’m tagging in @low @OGIncognito @Skydiver to assist you better.
I’ve never dealt with the smell before but I mostly grow in coco.
Just searched and there were limited answers
Potting soil can smell bad because of factors such as bad drainage and lack of oxygen which leads to the anaerobic decomposition of organic material. This can lead to the production of bad-smelling gases such as ammonia and hydrogen sulfide. Soil should have an earthy scent and any variations from this should be checked.

Without all the history and reading up the post on the low run off PH and flush what was the final flush PH? Did you test the PPMs? The plant issues are most likely PH related. I’ve never experienced the sulfur smell and can’t offer any advice and would follow a drench to drought routine with liberal run off if using synthetic fertilizer. Periodically testing the PH and PPMs in the run off. Target a PPM range of 800-1200 with a PH range of 6.3-6.8 ![]()
Update so I purchased some calcium 96 by down to earth and used about half a teaspoon in a gallon of water and then pH down from 9.0 to 7.7 to raise the pH that was at 5.5 And my runoff came out at 7.0 so I fix the pH problem waiting to do another watering. Will keep you updated.
3 years today huh. Wow
Dropped two watermelon OG autos into soil last night. 1 in a 3 gal fabric autopot and the other in a 5 gal regular fabric. FINALLY! This grow wont be in my home just setting up some homies growspace and running it for him.
Good to see seeds hit the soil, even if they are elsewhere. How’s work going?
Work is good but Im exhausted. Its been pretty muggy and its taxing to work in the flower rooms under the lights when its super moist like that.
Oh I started em here, just gonna move em over there once they get established. They need too much attn this early on for me to check on em elsewhere.
That is madness!!
El dorado right there!
