Difference between autoflower and photo besides lighting

In cross breeding the plants will inherit dominant and recessive traits from either parent strain. To get that certain structure, smell, size etc growers will pheno hunt these and clone, self and often back cross to stabilize that one they’ve found and like :love_you_gesture:

Updress is when you remove lower ,weak branches that dont make the canopy line. For me at home that is any branch that doesnt make it half way up the plant.

Not when like pictured above. (The real bad one) extreme foxtails dont develop the same as buds do. Less surface area and density with less trichomes.

The reason you see as many as you do is because they are marketed as beginner friendly. When in fact most people who are indifferent would tell you the opposite. They are good for not having a proper grow space, but not necessarily easy to grow well.

Probably half of the photoperiod plants available could be done in 100 days or less indoors using 12/12 or put on 12/12 when 3-4 weeks old. And there are several very well documented auto grows exceeding 100 days of grow time to harvest. Most photoperiod plants will mature enough to flower by 4 weeks and there are a ton of photos available that will flower in 55-60 days. Not to say you need to change what you’re doing if it works. But just because there is a large portion of users here that like to veg plants 8 weeks or more isn’t the only way to grow photos either.

Thank you for this information I did not know that about photos. I assumed they took the usual outdoor time of up to 6 months, yes my sour diesel in my closet took over 100 days but my Afghan in my tent was close to the 90 day mark.
I will do some research on photos and look at doing one next year maybe

So you just chop it. Does it help the others grow better once thats gone? I watched a vid on super cropping and was like omg. If its not dying idk why I have a hard time getting rid of it.

It helps the plant be efficiant. Outdoors, no problem, lotsa sun. Indoors…tiny mini sun. Grow lights only have so much light penetration. By removing the lower not so tall branches you allow the plant to redirect that energy to the buds actually in the light, your main tops. I know it seems weird but you are letting go of larf for better buds up top.

Right side is updressed and defoliated left side is not. This turns into something like this…

I have a LOT of seeds from him. We did a horsetrade. Still in contact. Superior genetics.

Not weird at all, makes sense. This is my second grow so I’m wanting to do better this time around. I didnt train at all last time. I want a more even canopy and more buds like in your pic. Nice thick buds! I took a screenshot of when you said best time to do that so i wont forget, as I am growing a auto plant. Im just coming into week 4 of veg so I got a lil time till then.

100%. I myself do little training besides a fim mostly. This requires me to stage harvest to ripen lower larfy buds for edibles. I DO defoliate 1/3rd of the way up. I just tend to allow lower bud development for the express purpose of oils. So many ways to skin these cats depending on needs.

Trying my hand at edibles & ended up with some really dank brownies. Followed a recipe and I have to assume it was based on buds of lessor potency. These things are powerhouses, but I’m not complaining in the least. :sunglasses:

So I didn’t get that much stretch going on and it’s fairly short. I was actually a week off so im only in week 5 which idk might be considered week 1 of flowering . I did go head and lay down bloom top dress a few days ago. Any who, I wanted to come back and ask about the defoiliating/updressing.

Would you be removing these thin lil braches like in this pic?

This kinda thing is why I drifted into photoperiod. She looks good though for a lil shortie.

Do something like this. Remove those larger leaves from the very bottom open everything under there up to the light.

With a short plant you could prolly leave those lil branches and skip the updress. Look at it after you clear out those lower leaves and see what you think. You can always take more leaves or branches in another week say if you feel you left too much.

Thanks. One of these days I’m going to do a photo too. I see how these autos can be really random. I had a short one last time but it wasnt this short and I’m pretty sure I didnt stunt it.

Anytime.

Yeah, autos are good for some stuff, like late season outdoor for example. But, after a few years now, I like photos better.
