CygnusX1’s first Grow - ILGM Gelato Auto

I have the Source Turbo. The thing I’d suggest you do is determine how much plant material you intend to process. The Source will do around 2 oz at a time while the ETOH Pro will do 5 zips.

The quality of the finished product is entirely dependent on how good a job you do with your wash. Short duration (QWET) in -40F (5 minutes) will deliver gorgeous oil. A second, longer wash will extract the bulk of the rest of the oil for things like edibles.

You want to avoid extracting chlorophyll as it’s bitter and nasty tasting. Doing your due diligence at the front end (cold wash) is where the rubber meets the road.

@Myfriendis410 , have you ever tried with AVB? Clearly would need a good water cure / wash first and the taste wouldn’t be the same as using fresh bud, but besides taste and lower returns this should be equally effective, yes?

I’m probably going to wait a while before using fresh bud for anything but vaporizing / burning until I have at least another grow complete to build up my stash…

We just went legal for growing here and are probably ~2 years from dispensaries, and I’m pretty confident I’m not going to want to go back to “street” bud to supplement any time soon.

The Source would certainly meet my needs from a capacity perspective for some time to come…

You have to use 190 proof ethanol. No denatured, no Isopropyl etc. You want a food grade high proof alcohol for your extractions. Cold temperatures are used to preferentially extract good oils, leaving the nasty stuff behind. There are folks that take it down colder than -40. Dry ice is a good source for getting plant material/alcohol to temp before doing a wash.

Sugar leaves, larf and trim work just fine but the yield will be less. When you do a first run for dabs the potency will be around 800 to 900 mg/gram of THC regardless of the quantity extracted. Second wash will yield in the 500 mg/gram but will be loaded with other cannabinoids and chlorophyll. That said; the second wash is what I use for edibles and compared to cooking plant material in oil for hours, this has almost zero ‘weed’ taste or aroma when used.

Yeah, I do have some Everclear 190 on hand, and plan to pick up some extra in the very near future during a planned trip to a neighboring state where its accessible.

Love the simplicity of the source and cost savings / convenience of being able to reclaim the Everclear, especially since I need to travel a bit to restock.

All in all I’m happy with it although higher capacity is always nice. @AfgVet has the ETOH Pro and uses the heck out of it.

They say 95% recovery but I don’t think that’s possible. More like 80%. But seeing as how I have a couple of gallons of GNS I’ll be good for a while.

Anything is better than the 0% reclaim I got in my small test without hardware.

There are a few additional items you can get although I am getting great results without: a buchner funnel and 120 micron filter paper, small vacuum pump, heat mat and silicone mat, dab tool, etc.

This is worth it’s weight when doing extractions:

Once you have timed out with your wash you must get the plant material separated quickly: the screen mouth does a great job. Then I go into a #4 cone filter twice before putting in the crucible.

Here’s an example of first run oil: did this from some Durban Thai/Cindy 99 flower.

The stuff is dangerous it’s so potent. Delicate floral note, no throat hit. 5 grams from first run of 30 grams of flower.

That’s some beautiful oil @Myfriendis410

Alright I’m finally commenting on this thread and setting it to watch because I need to know how wonderful these Grove bags are that everyone keeps taking about.

I’m thinking when I get to harvest I’ll go Grove bag. Awesome grow and information here!

I’ll post an update after some time in them for sure. All good so far, but only a few days in.

If you haven’t found it already, hit the search function and look up grove bags. There is a fairly lengthy thread on them, the only negative I’ve seen was a bad batch where some of the “zippers” were not properly attached to the bags which they replaced very quickly.

The only thing I’d really say is go mostly with bigger bags (the 1/4 lb are great). You don’t need to fill them and the smaller bags tend to flatten the buds a little early in the cure process. I’ll give those another go once curing in the larger bags is done.

Last step before my patience gets the best of me for a smoke report…

Took the final dry weight tonight. 2.2 oz. I’m plenty happy with that for my first grow and for an Autoflower.

It’s currently split between 2 of the 1/4 lb Grove bags just to leave plenty of room for them to cure.

The bags are holding RH perfectly, floating between 62-63% so right on target given any margin of error in the hygrometers anyway.

Thanks again to everyone who helped offer advice and assistance through the grow! You’re all awesome!!!

Will report back in here when my patience dissipates and we sample the crop.

PS, if you haven’t, don’t forget to vote! Some nice ones again this month.

Ok, so, its time for the smoke report (if you want to call it that…).

Lets start with a reminder that this was my first grow, and that my state just went legal so I don’t have any true basis of comparison other that “street” bud.

When we travel to legal states I typically just get carts / edibles for convenience so haven’t had dispensary flower.

That’s not to say there hasn’t been some pretty darned good stuff over the years, but none identifiable by strain.

Buds have been curing in Grove bags for 3 weeks now so there still may be a little improvement coming, but all of the “hay / grass” smell from the chlorophyll is gone.

This is the first time that I’ve been able to detect anything but typical “weed” smell and there are absolutely some pretty strong citrus notes, and maybe a little bit of “spice” in there as well.

I did intentionally harvest a touch early as I wasn’t looking for any couch lock at all.

Effects come on pretty fast and VERY strong with a nice heady buzz and more of a body high (but not sleepy) than I had expected which is nice.

Seems very well balanced as it was enjoyed this weekend while getting stuff done around the house and equally to sit and watch a movie in the evening.

Really happy with this first grow and I can say for sure there’s absolutely no going back, especially considering the mistakes I’d made and that it should only get better from here (almost hard to believe).

Most importantly, THANK YOU to everyone here who helped me bring this plant to the finish line. Sure is nice having some home grown bagged up and accessible during the current grow. Makes things FAR less stressful for sure.

Cheers!

I suppose now is also a good time to do this, just for continuity:

Thanks! Yeah, I made a few mistakes but the gang here helped turn her around and get me running.

Can’t wait to see what the second Gelato Auto does in the current run. She is absolutely loving the Coco…
