Cured product doesn’t smell correct

My topic is curing. I hope I’m the correct forum for this topic. My problem is my product after a seven day dry and I trim and put them in jars with Boveda packs and I burp for 3 to 5 weeks. The end product is it smells like a strong medicine smell or strong earthy. It’s not molded and the taste is very harsh. The effects are okay but the smell and taste is not right. I can supply strain Upon request. I have some new plants Ready to crop and I don’t want this to happen again. Please help.

you need at least 2 1/2 months curing for it to smell and make it smoother i burp my jars and use a vacuum sealer for with a mason jar attachments and suck them down every time I burp it has helped me out alot by doing this also some strains will cure longer than others to hope this helps you

also another thing to consider is how much do you have in your containers you don’t want them packed full just kinda loaded up but still has room to move around a little bit

did you hang dry till the stem snap then jar

What’s th he strain. I have granddaddy purple that smells weird compared to the rest.

Thanks very much @ThcinKC. I haven’t been been burping that long but I only fill the Qt jars about 3/4 or 2/3 leaving at least 1/4 of the jar clear for air to exchange. I have a vacuum sealer so I will seal as you recommend and burp longer. Man I hope this helps. It’s embarrassing when bag weed smells and taste better than the product that you’ve worked on for so long.

Also if your stuff is to wet just sit it out of the jar for a hour and put back it in my beginning burping I do it for 20 or 30 minutes till the outside of the bud is crisp and it bounced back when squeezed then i go to 10 minutes burps

An important and often overlooked factor when drying and curing is ambient rH in the drying area. I keep the rH in my drying area at 50%. If your rH is higher than 60% or so it will take much longer to get a proper dry and cure. May also result in mold, etc at higher rH.

I live in the pacific northwest, ambient rH swings from quite low (< 30% at times) to 100%. I use dehumidifiers and humidifiers to stabilize the humidity in my growing areas and drying area. I started out unaware of this important consideration. My first harvest dried much too quickly and didn’t smell right. My second harvest was a different time of year and dried too slowly, was in danger of mold.

I hung some for seven days and never did get the small stems to snap but the bud seemed like if i kelp hanging the buds were started to dry out so i went ahead and jarred them. The strains vary.
Gold Leaf, banana Kush, OG Kush, AK-47, White Widow. I have some Acapulco Gold and sour diesel almost ready and I don’t want to mess the process up with them.

@merlin44 is correct. Wait until the small stems snap next time before putting them in jars. It helps speed up the cure because you won’t trap as much moisture in your buds if you jar once they snap. I would also recommend not putting the Boveda packs in your jars until they have been curing for around a month. :v:

Thanks so much @MattyBear I can use all the advice I can get. I’ve done two grows now with the same results so I know that it’s something that I’m doing wrong or something that I’m not doing right. I really depend on the advice of all you good folks that know what you’re doing. Thank you so much and any advice is appreciated and put into action immediately. I think that I’ve been watching too many Utubes and getting a lot of conflicting advice. Thank you so much ILGM for this forum and all the good folks giving advice. Thanks Y’all

There is more than one way to effectively grow cannabis. The problem is that many of the techniques that work well for one setup may be completely wrong for another. I decided early on to stick with the ILGM growing methods. Another method would likely work just as well. Mixing and matching should be delayed until you have knowledge and experience of your own to guide you.

i have found if you bust down the big buds into nugs it helps with cure…lol
i used to want to keep the huge buds for trophies i guess…when i started to bust them down my cure was better all theway around.

Properly drying and curing large colas is a bit risky and takes extra time and care…but I just love whipping out a 6" - 8" cola to give to somebody, blows their mind :+1:

@BIGE is correct though, much easier to cure smaller nugs, especially until you have some experience and understand the process.
