Cold-tolerant strains

I’ve grown off and on for a few years and found the most difficult thing to keep consistent is temperature even in a small space. In the summer, I can utilize two 6 in. duct fans at varing speeds to keep the temperature as low as needed but dark periods are a different thing. Even in the summer time during my plant’s lights out time, the temperature sometimes gets as low as 61°F. Regardless though, I’ve had harvests that turned out “fine” but I almost always lack the density I look for in excellent quality weed which is dissapointing.

Just that I refuse to turn the heat up and ruin the perfect temperature for everyone in my house. Also I will not run a tiny 1500 watt heater while my ever so powerful grow lamp uses only 315 watts. I stress enough about the power bill as is.

So question: Are there any cold tolerant cannabis strains that you know of or have come across? Thanks.

That’s a great question, wondering what strains are better sorted for colder climate.

You can grow some nice Sativas or Idicas with those temps, my only recommendation would be the early veg stage. If you’re looking for good growth up front the plants needs warmer temps in the seedling and early veg stage, after week 4ish you could lower the temps back to your norm :love_you_gesture:

This could only be a problem for closet sized grows when running an electric heater doesn’t justify the means. I could grow me about a pound of what I call “food-grade” weed in a closet for less than $50/month which is good enough for me but it’ll still be of worse quality than the lowest grade you can find at a dispensary because it lacks density. I want rock hard nugs. But with the right strain… one that doesn’t give a damn about temperature… i’d imagine I could get dense nugs everytime.

Brassinolide is a plant hormone that, among other things, makes cannabis better able to withstand cold. It dissolves in water and can be applied as a foliar spray.

A good source for it and other useful plant hormones and chemicals is https://www.powergrown.com/. It’s a one-man business and the owner is quite knowledgeable about what’s useful for what. He’s worth a phone call.

It sounds like you’re dealing with some tough temperature swings! Luckily, there are a few cold-tolerant strains like Hindu Kush, Durban Poison, and Northern Lights that can handle lower temps better. These could help you get the density you’re after, even when the temperatures dip during the dark cycle.
