I’m using coco perlite and my seedling is 4 days old ,when should I start on feeding it ? Thanks
Some will say when the cotyledons go yellow. I feed front to back.
What do you mean front to back ? Sorry
Feed every time from beginning to end. seedlings every few days until their roots get stronger. Jumping the gun on daily feeds drown and stunt plants. Can also lead to stem rot.
Thank you !!
No problem. There are several coco growers here so reach out anytime. Lot of ways to run coco. I suggest starting a journal to keep people in the loop and you can have all your info in one place.
Can always tag people by putting an “@“ sign in front of user names to get some direct help on a topic.
Like this @Brett_420.fatbuds
I feed the coco before I plant the seed in it.
Coco has zero food. So just like in any natural soil, there should be some nutrition even as the seed sprouts. It can start taking it in whenever it wants that way.
Yeh I thought I’d have to feed it straight away but the seed company said no and I was confused . Thanks for your input
I condition my coco prior to planting, then feed every watering throughout, i stop nitrogen at the end and go light on the feed at that point
Welcome! Has the coco you are using been buffered with Calmag?
Like the guys above, @Low and the rest, I feed start to finish, and as @Spiney_norman says, I “precharged” my coco. (Both of the guys with the @ in front of their handle will get a notification, like Low was saying.)
I use Cannacoco bricks and hydrate them in a tote with full strength Jacks. Over a few days I kept “turning it over”, fluffing it, to get it to a damped consistent texture. The corners of my tote were a little soggy.
I didn’t use Cal-mag when I started and after a few weeks one of my girls started showing Mag deficiency. I used up the remainder of the cal-mag I had on hand, and the issue went away, once the ca-mag was gone, I went over on the Epsom .5 gram for every 5 gallons. Not sure if it was really enough to help anything, but it made me feel better and the girls didn’t seem to mind.
First couple of days, while still in cups, just a table spoon or so, around the seedling. Coco was already damp, and I was keeping the humidity up. after a few days, any time I saw the top starting to have dry spots, I watered / fed. As soon as I transplanted to bags it was daily feeds to runoff.
A wise man convinced me off the importance keeping an eye on runoff numbers. It matters.
This the basics, may seem complex but it’s not. And as mentioned above, plenty of folks here are running coco and will glad to help. I learned tons of stuff from the guys who posted above. Some just from reading their journals and some I asked direct questions. (I frikken love this place)
Now at week 10, I’m feeding 3x a day. As I’m logging my EC runoff numbers it allows me to watch for salt build up in the coco. I’m close to needing another daily feed / fertigation event.
I can agree with that in soil, but in coco I agree with you, right from the start.
Right from there web site.
It is washed and prebuffered and maintains a pH range of 5.5 – 6.5.
I’d still precharge it with nutrients, but you should have to “condition” it. Some folks may do it anyways, up to you.
Thanks so much for that! I find a lot of the words not familiar with make growing seem really complicated but I’m slowly learning and becoming familiar with things . I didn’t understand what you meant about counting runoffs ? Sounds important!
I actually just feed them for the first time but only a little just to give them a boost they are looking pretty healthy at the moment but thought it couldn’t hurt if I don’t have any in my medium. @1LuckyMF
@1LuckyMF does that mean I don’t have to worry about the ph level?
You still need to monitor the PH & EC of your nutrients and runoff through the entire grow.
It just means it’s not going to throw off you PH.
Dang, that should be “shouldn’t”
What is ec? And do you mean you measure the ph of the run off ? Still confused about that bit you mentioned about counting it ?? Thanks man you are really kind and helpful!!
