I have done so much research over the last few days for my first grow, I am now starting to second guess everything. I want to grow one plant at a time. I will be using Girl Scout Cookies Extreme autoflower. I live alone but rent the house so am afraid of maintenance or repair people needing to come in. I plan on using a 45"x66" closet. I am concerned about the heat if I use a good light setup like the HLG 260. I had a thought that perhaps I could just leave the closet door open all the time (unless I need to hide the grow from prying eyes). Since autoflowers don’t need the 12/12 light cycle would this be an issue?
No it should be fine. you can plug a fan to blow hot air out with the door open. I wouldn’t rely solely on the door being open unless you have a thermometer to monitor the temp
Good to know. I will start with the door closed and monitor the temps. Up to 85 degrees should be ok for autoflower? I have central a/c and usually keep it around 74 at the hottest in the house.
I was thinking of having one fan in the closet aimed toward the top of the door opening to blow out the hot air and another fan in the bedroom blowing cool air in at floor level. Not sure if the air currents would hinder one another with this method.
I’d start with the door open because fresh non stagnent air are important. What I’m saying is don’t assume the door open is enough. Buy a fan ahead of time and make sure you keep it around 70-77
No two fans is even better. The more fresh air and co2 you bring in and out the better.
Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.
will smell be an issue?
I’m with @pptrsha1 I would be worried about the smell. There are times during flowering that I open the ten5 for a few minutes and the entire house has the fine smell of cannabis in the air.
I have already ordered a one gallon pail of Ona Pro odor remover to put in the hallway. I know not to put it in the same room as my plant. I am also looking into carbon filters to use in my central a/c. I have come to the conclusion that growing in a closet with no ventilation will not work, so don’t have much choice but to leave the door open.
Use a 6" ac infinity fan with a short duct connected to a charcoal filter. It can be just recirculating and doesnt have to be exhausted out of the main room. That will be sufficient to clean the odor.
Great idea! I looked at them on Amazon. So how would I set this up. Would it work to simply mount the fan in the closet with the exhaust coming out of the fan, through a short duct, into the filter and then pointed toward the closet door to exhaust the clean air? Also this will be a single plant grow. It looks like a 4" might be suitable?
There are also wire rack shelves mounted along two walls. Could I set the fan on one of those and as you said just let the air recirculate in the closet?
It’s not impossible, I have similar situation and I grow in a closet, my old led lights get it warmer than I like, but just using a 6" fan. But I also add Co2 bag because I have to keep door closed.
It does get a little stinky when they are in flower, but I also have tons of house plants, and all I have is a foot of extention cord with timer outside the closest, anyone rings my door bell I unplug throw timer and cord in closet, maintenance man can come in to change battery in smoke alarms etc no problem… and I grow up to 3 plants at a time.
I ended up buying the 8" infinity fan and filter. The 6" filters are out of stock everywhere. I also bought 8’ of duct as that was the shortest I could find. Can someone help me with how to arrange these 3 components. It seems like I should be able to set it up to intake through the filter or exhaust through the filter. Which method do you guys/gals use? Also I assume the duct needs to go between the fan and filter, I can’t tell if the filter can connect directly to the fan or not. I am guessing not since BetrayedSoul said to get a short duct.
When answering please remember I am recirculating the air within the closet and have no way to vent through a wall since I am renting my house. Thanks.
edit: Would it make more sense to intake air through the filter so that the fan is receiving clean air? Better for fan longevity?
would be fine
Make sure to intake through filter and exhaust out of fan for best performance.
if you’re filtering for odor put filter on exhaust
Thank you for the excellent advice BetrayedSoul. I read as many articles as I could find and the consensus is to pull air in through the filter and exhaust through the fan.
I’m still not sure where to put the duct. Should it be between the filter and fan or attached to the exhaust side of the fan? Thanks.
Connects fan to filter. You can also add a piece on other side of fan so you can adjust where the air direction blows
