I have all the area and soil that I can use.
Nice! Well sounds like you are off to a good start! As Ive said many times, cannabis likes rich well drained soil so I use raised beds or mounds and never dig holes do to drainage issues. Far better to let cannabis grow down into native soil. I dont use pots outdoors, so my plants cant be moved. I use dry ammendments throughout the growing season with seaweed and kelp extract periodically that has humic acid in it. Plants love that stuff. And I use a cover crop of crimson clover and hay during veg. Really its pretty low effort to be honest.
Scrog is a great way to spread your bud sites and maximize bud productivity. To a lesser extent I do it sorta using rancher wire. Its pretty tough to scrog 10 foot tall plants lol. So the wire contains the inside of the plant by ofdering support to the outside of it. The branches are also guided through the ranch wire slots. I havent used ranch wire for a couple years, probably will this year though.
Lol, yeah that would be a hell of a job trying to scrog a ten foot plant. I said earlier that I tried growing trees and I do try to. But after looking around and finding out you grow 10 foot plus plants mine is more like a sapling lol. I have grown a 12 foot plant before it was in all day sun and it was a gorilla grow but that was the only one like that I had. My average is around 8 to 9 foot. But sometimes they just get 6 foot tall some are just naturally shorter. At least that’s what I keep telling myself, lol. I have never started plants this early in the year. I always waited until 1st of June to put seeds in the ground and I always put my plants in the ground. The only way I will put one in a grow bag is a have to case. But I have never tried to mound a hill of soil up to put one in or a rised bed. That makes sense though. Would you walk me through the steps that you take on your outdoor grow to get 10 foot plus plants?
Yeah sure! I basically use natural soil from a farm where they cut ditches through an existing cottonwood forest. Its already pretty rich in organic matter. It compacts though so I add compost to fluff it up. I lije the growth I get under difuse poly. I raise the bottom for airflow and have 2 foot high vents all along the top to allow heat to escape passively. This way I can control if I want rain on my plants or not. Also protects from hail!
Outdoors, I dont like plants much over 8 feet because they are a bitch to cover in the fall, but hey if they get bigger I try harder. Lol. Honestly, I really dont do much. Once I move the plants into their forever place, I let them establish and then plant clover. I also place rotting hay on the soil to encourage worm action.
Set to watching - welcome to the community! have you considered taking the 40 viable seedling you already have and splitting 20 for the sog in the 10x10 space and 20 to go outside when weather permits?
Thank you, At first I was going to put all 40 in the the 10x10. But after talking to you and our comrades. I’m going to do like you recommended. 20 indoor and 20 outdoor. The only thing I’m kindly concerned about premature flowering. At first I was on a 24 hour light schedule then I switched to 18/6 and now I’m on a 16/8. What kind of a light schedule should I be on before transplanting outside to help from premature flowering?
Well definitely don’t put them out this weekend, it’s the equinox. I’m in the north east and I can say from experience that first week of May is totally safe but you are in a much warmer climate than I am and if I were in your shoes I’d be itching to get my plants outside as soon as possible.
You’ve been growing outdoors for a long time, I think it’s safe to say don’t put any of these plants outside any sooner than you normally would for outdoor. Depending on your timing for switching your indoor room to a flowering schedule you may need to get those plants Destined for outdoor out of the room and keep them under 18/6 Lighting for a couple more weeks before they can go outdoors.
I liked your initial post about routing clones that you gain from defoliating. That’s exactly how my current grow is going, and that is actually my plan for next weekend as well. I’ve got a couple of plants I’m starting from seed for outdoor but I’m going to do a few from clone as well.
I will take some of the shoots gained by defoliating and stick them in my aero cloner. They should be ready to transplant by the end of the month into soil and in good enough shape to go outside by early May.
I did this in reverse Back in August. Just before my plants started the flowering outdoors I took some clones and set them up to flower inside starting in the fall. Back in November when I popped some beans specifically to grow indoors I did the same thing over again and defoliated and cloned what I took off. That all timed out really well because 10 weeks after taking those clones they were routed and planted in pots and have grown to a size where the last crop finished up a week ago and the new crop of clones is going into the flowering room and will only need to veg for another two weeks before the lights get flipped.
Before I flip those lights next weekend though you better believe I’m gonna defoliate and clone the results and some of those will go outside in May.
It’s nice having extra clones, it’s rare that any of my friends would turn me down when I call to give away my extras. I love giving my friends clones and then comparing our results.
This will be good to watch. The smallest area I can get by with is about a 20"x20" area. And that is if I flip at 4 weeks old. I am in coco though. You have some of the better soil growers in here all ready
That will be one nice tent once these get to growing ![]()
