Change from 24/0 to 20/4 -- is that ok

OK, it’s getting really hot here and keeping the grow room cool enough during the hottest time of day is getting difficult. Is it ok for me to change my lighting schedule from 24/0 to 20/4 – or do I have to wean the plants into the cycle. Growing autos, in soil, indoors (obviously).

Thats fine.
18/6 is a good spot for autos.
20/4 works too.

You can switch the cycle to where lights out are at peak daytime temps.

I’ve bought into the school of 24/0 so hard that I don’t think I could drop to 18/6. Do they need weaned down – say 23/1, 22/2, etc.?

That’s what I want to do. I just need to know if I can make the change in one day or do I need to make the change over a few days. @Reed71 @Newt @nmgeo chime in. And, when it’s dark, can I still go into the room? or will any light leak freak the plants out?

Nope. Go for it.

I would turn them off at 1:00pm or 2:pm and back on at 7:00pm or 8pm missing most of the hot part of the day. You won’t disturb autos in flower imho with a quick exposure to light.

Photo periods might be a different animal and revert to veg with exposure to light. Personally, I would not worry and take the time to gradually switch I would just do it. Might even do it myself Lol … :v: :sunglasses:

@GrnyGrows 6 to 6 lights on at dark that’s what I run more oxygen at night and it won’t bother plants going in lights off as long as not doing it all the time

What do you mean… I’m not following.

I don’t recommend 24/0 for anything except re-vegging. All living things benefit from a rest period, and most of what I have read about 24/0 is that it doesn’t help enough to justify the additional cost of electricity. If your plant are autos, you can change their light schedule anytime, including during flower.

Vegging photoperiod plants will continue to veg until extended dark periods trigger them to think it is fall. A lot of growers run 6/2 to help manage heat in the grow area.

I’ll translate. Reed is on a 12/12 schedule, but has his lights on period during dark hours outside. This can also help manage heat because it is cooler at night, and In a lot of places, electricity is cheaper during nighttime hours.

Awesome guidance, as always. I’d like to adjust more for the heat than anything. We’ll be 100% solar in the next few weeks, so cost will drop. But the heat will never cease.

Do what ever you have to do with your lighting / heat management. Once you pop a auto flower seed it’s timer is running and it’s going to do what it has to do regardless of your light cycle. Just make sure they get 18 to 24 hours of light a day and they will march on.
