In my experience, if it does not taste good after a week dry…no cure in world will make it taste good. Time will make it smoother with proper air exchange (burping) but if it aint good, no cure will magically make it taste better. Back in the 90’s when i grew outdoors religiously…it was amazing after a standard drying. Guess what im saying is a good cure will benefit good weed, but a good cure with ok weed, well it will still only be ok weed!

@Oldschool1 what type of lighting and nutrients are you using? Type of medium and avg ppfd? A more potent weed should give you a better aroma and taste. Basically a more dense trichome concentration. Too much and too little light can have negative affects on the smoke.

I had descent results in soil with jacks. I had much better results with coco and jacks. Lm301 diodes are a good thing but more was more concerned with make of light, and ppfd you were targeting during flower, size of footprint grown in and how many watts.

Info tidbit based on the OP question. None of the winners for the Cannabis Cup cured their weed for less than 6 months.

I sample when going from dry to cure. Just a nug. Then after 4 weeks of curing I sample again. It just gets better and by the time it has cured for 4 months it is primo on smoothness, flavor and smell.

Lol…in the 30 years of growing if it taste like hay after a week, no cure in the world is going to make it magically better. Curing has its place but it has to be good in first place. Ive had weed in jars for over a year and it tasted better in the first few months. Im sure what to be said is im curing wrong…its not rocket science.

That’s interesting, I didn’t think most folks got rid of the hay smell by a week after chop because there would be chlorophyl still releasing…? :woman_shrugging:

What i mean is good weed will taste good immediately after the dry. In my experience anyway. I have never had hay tasting weed that burped into a good taste, ever. But will def get smoother.

Had the hay way back in the day…lol
Later found out the “sweating” method in jars (during the cure phase) really did the magic… Top shelf in all directions.
*Slow down your main dry
*Burp jars for the cure, leave tops off when sweat moisture exceeds your target
*Repeat
*Patience

In my experience, hay smell is simply from chlorophyll not being broken down due to it being too damp or not burped properly. I agree that I’ve never had mediocre herb getting much better after a longer cure. It’s still just mediocre. But I have definitely had good weed taste like hay because I didn’t dry properly before jarring it. Pulled it out and dried longer then started curing after it stabilized at 62-58%rh and it was fantastic. But that last part was literally within 2 weeks of harvest. Now I try to do a slow dry over 10-14 days then cure for minimum of 30 days before I try it. It’s usually as good as it’s going to get right around the 6 month mark.
