This poor girl has a badly broken stem. More than half of the stem’s support fibers are snapped. I rinsed the dirt out of the wound and wrapped the stem snugly with hemp twine to keep the wound closed then tied it to a support rod.
QUESTION: How long will it take for this girl to mend? I don’t want to remove the twine too soon and risk reinjury nor wait so long that it cuts her circulation.
I personally tape them. I have broken several over the years. Worst was a full squash from big lights falling. Is it auto or photo? Have a full picture of plant?
She’s a photoperiod. I wrapped with natural twine to allow some breathability and so it can get wet without unraveling. Tape may be better but I don’t know.
The plants have long leafless lower stems because I remove several sets of lower nodes as plants grow. I’m experimenting.
She’s the one circled in red. Photo was taken before her fall.
These plants were six weeks old from seed yesterday and are 10cm taller than they look because that much of their stems were buried when I transplanted them into their current pots.
Waited a little late for supports? I’ve done that too. I’ve had stems and branches split and I just tied them together snuggly.
I thought his break would be more traumatic for the plant due to the many broken fibers but so far it hasn’t phased her noticeably. I hope she continues to do well.
