I was going to go with perlite …
Coco Coir with about 10 to 20% perlite is a great media for cannabis.
Only thing different is water every day and pH to 5.8.
Fast growth, few problems and great results.
I use Jacks 321 for food. They must be fed from day 1. Its basically a hydroponic grow using the Coco as a media to hold the roots.
Read up on the Cocoforcannabis website.
@Spiney_norman is spot on!
I used cannacoco bricks and run straight coco, it cycles slower, mean I use more water per feeding, but feed fewer times. I’m running 3 gallon bags and each girl is using a little over a gallon a day.
I’m using Jacks 321 nutrients for the first time this grow… hole shite! I’m seriously impressed.
The website he mentioned has details of using coco.
Well that’s two for coco.
I’m #TeamSoil. Something about getting dirt under your fingernails and the smell of earth after water days. Just can’t beat it. Not as fast as coco or other ‘soilless mediums) but the extra day or two between waters works with my grow style (lazy).
Fox Farms Ocean Forest is my go to for a nice body soil out the bag. Their Happy Frog is excellent for starting seeds.
If you are going to ‘bake’ your own? Most soils are decent enough as long as it isn’t full of wood chips and you add appropriate amounts of perlite and other goodies.
I had to use my google, but Coast Of Maine is another brand I’ve heard raving reviews about. If it was easier to source locally (south eastern USA) I’d probably have tried it out by now
I would prefer soil, totally organic, which is what I came from. Loved to do it in a green house. But sadly all the folks in this state want to push their beliefs on everyone else. Oblivious to their own hypocrisy.
Gets like that. I wanted to get in on the legalization here. But the rules are trash.
No outdoor (we are a farming state)
No grow your own meds
No guns after u get a card
Start to finish tracking (makes sense theoretically but literally a way for them to cash in EVERY STEP of the process)
But that’s politics n I try to avoid that here.
Anyway organic. As in as few chemicals as possible? Or living/semi alive, feed your soil type of deal? They are pretty much the same but if you’re going down the living soil rabbit hole, it’s quite the journey. TLDR: microbes, acids (humic, fulvic, etc), n soil health is key.
As few chems as possible is pretty much FF soils and Jacks 321 for the win
Edit: Jacks 321 is NOT organic. But cheap and reliable. Organic I’ve used is more akin to Alaska Fish Emuls and BuildASoil dry hydroxylate, etc etc
I am exactly what this guy says. I didn’t say this earlier because I am pro Fox farm products and that is all I will use for easy availability. So I’m in love with the fox farm. I also been reading on the main Coast soil for the last few years it’s obtainable for me being in New England. But it cost 30 plus percent more than Fox farm soils. When I work at a marijuana grow facility for a little bit what they use was Coco blocks to grow. Like purple and gold set I don’t mind getting my hands dirty and it’s fun to me.
This is for all the Coco lovers out there
Here growing outside is okay as long as no one sees it LOL. Get a marijuana card and losing your gun license is stupid. If they want that I want mandatory hair follicle tests on every state employee every month. So when enough people cry about it hopefully it will make change.
I had some success with FFOF and liquid nutrients. I now use Roots Organic Original with their dry nutrient line with some success.
Edit: @PurpNGold74 asks and receives
These photos are of my current grow which about finished.
I should add that the two on the left are White Widow that were chopped this past Monday. Chop weight of the two plants was 1965 grams and 1620 grams.
The Magic Man himself!! Shoulda dropped some bud porn and a drops mic at the end my friend
Being an old guy, I drool on myself sometimes too.
Valid.
The illusion of freedom is real in the Sunshine state.
I don’t know if Uncle Ronnie even drinks, but somehow I have images of him sipping on a tumbler of bourbon while condemning cannabis.
Even if it passes in Nov, he’ll drag his feet as much as possible for implementation, guaranteed.
Planning my second grow. I’ve been using the FFOF with good success on the first, but did struggle a little with overwatering and felt it was a little hot for the seedlings. I was thinking of doing a FFOF in the bottom with a plugs depth of FFHF on top and a 20% mix of perlite throughout. Seems like you’ve got great experience with the media do just wanted to get your thoughts on that mix?
Same "boat’ for November grow.
30-40% perlite, minimum.
I too, overwater and local soil is clay.
Been a problem learning FFOF, HF, and SW.
LSS, more perlite.
Good luck-
Recently, I Found 4cuft perlite for $25.00 at grow store.
Thanks! What makes you say 30-40 minimum for the perlite? I feel like most blends I’ve seen are 20 percent so just wondering the their behind the process. I’m indoors in a tent and will be using fabric pots again. My current FFOF actually drains pretty well which made me feel like it needed water sooner than it did, but read the perlite would help safeguard a little and just went with kind of the general min rec.
PNW-Seattle- Island-dweller, We are always wet, humid, or cold.
Things never dry, Water all around.
My dry cloth bags grow better than my heavy wet bags.
Gotcha! Yeah took me awhile to realize plants do better in drought than flood but I’m learning. My tent is in the basement with average lung room sitting at 60 RH without adjustment and I recently added a dehumidifier. So I might stick to the slightly lower percentage in my case to keep that 10-20 percent for the amended stuff. I mainly struggled with waiting the 3 days and for the life of me must not be able to feel what dry feels like an inch down. So hoping just a little insurance will put me there Plus I think my local shop has 2.5 cu ft bags and I’ll be doing 2 10 gallons so thinking 2 HF 2 OF and one perlite should be just about right. If I keep flooding them out because of my anxious nature it’s great to know I can bump it even higher if needed.
My de-humidifier water kills plants (when new).
After six months, water is better (went from 4.6 to 6.7 PH in measured reservoir water, even when mixed with city water…)
Yeah I don’t think I’d use the water, too many contaminants. We’re on OK well water, but I just ordered an RO recently because there’s a little fluoride.
I am down with #Teamsoil, but I do love all types of growing. I haven’t made the move yet to some of the other options I want to try. I get less yield than hydro or even coco for that matter but my aromas and flavor profile when smoking is above top shelf. I grow for one reason only, Quality. I use a 10 gallon pot and only do one at a time, although I was dabbling in multiple plants and I lost. I have 2 in the flower tent now and one in the veg tent. Once this round is over, back to 1…I shoulda known I cannot handle more than 1 lady at a time.
I use 3 soils from FF. Ocean, Happy and Coco Loco.
