Best light for a 4x4

Awesome! Sorry I missed this earlier, but if you get the opportunity to tinker with this fixture some maybe tighten board spacing up a little.

I’m a newbie and after lots of research I think this setup on Ebay looks like a great value

I can’t see how to insert or link to photos, so here’s the item name on eBay:
4x4 Grow Tent Kit w/ 1500w LED Grow Light or 315w CMH, Duct Fan, Filter 48x48"

Summary copied and edited:

  • 4x4ft All Metal Frame & Corner Grow Tent (48x48x78")
  • **315w CMH/LEC Grow Light with (2) 300w LEDs
  • **6 inch 400 CFM Duct fan with speed controller with all CMH Kits
  • **6 inch Carbon filter with 315 watt CMH/LEC Kits
  • **8ft 6 inch flexible ducting with 315w CMH Kits
  • Timers with enough outlets for however many lights and fans are included
  • Adjustable Light Hangers for All Included Lights
  • Grow Room Glasses with interchangeable blue HPS (HID) Lens & green LED Lens
  • Digital in/out Temperature & Humidity Monitor

About $650 delivered. Ships within US.

So far I can’t get seller response about light manufacturers/specs. LEDs in particular seem wimpy, but I’ve learned simple wattage doesn’t say it all. Also some forums indicated this CMH alone can power a 4x4.Seems to me it should produce for at least a couple of crops. Seller has 1300 positive reviews, and a couple of ā€œnon-responsive to complaintsā€ in there.

Later I could add to my light collection when I learn more from experience.

Am I overlooking anything. Any ideas about my odds of decent harvest success with this setup?
Thanks

@JMN67, a CMH 315 is on the low side for a 4x4, better suited to a 3x3, going HID, a 600 watt HPS/MH would be much better suited for a 4x4 and yield considerably more than the CMH 315, and costs less, and has more air-cooled reflector options.

That sounds like good advice. Underpowering seems to be a #1 handicap. I’m going to price out a component approach rather than the package deal and see how it looks. I was surprised to see this combo had both LEDs and CMH. CMH is said to have the most ā€œnaturalā€ light frequencies, and I was anticipating the LED would add more red for flowering. Any thoughts on that?
Thanks for your time.

My thoughts are they’re throwing in a couple cheap LEDs lights, because no one really wants them at this point.

CMH spectrum is good by itself, I’d rather have 2 CMH lights than 1 CMH and those LED lights.

I’m now looking at a package with a two bulb CMH setup that houses 630w. Total 4x4 tent kit cost is about $650 after buying bulbs, which are not included. Being new to growing I’m guessing that ongoing harvests will lead me to reassess convenience of the two bulb in one fixture. And this setup has no dimmer.
Think it will work? Shortcomings?

another thing to consider is u have to replace bulbs fairly often, LED’s last years.

Only issue there is it’s going to be hot, you’re going to have to exhaust a lot of hot air to keep temps in check, due to a non air cooled reflector, harder to cool than a 600 watt HPS with a air-cooled hood.

No doubt, came home to a dead bulb/no light in my flowering tent just yesterday, good thing I had spares. I think my Mars Hydro 300’s will last hundreds of years, sitting around not being used.

Yes, best lights are the latest tech of LEDs (blurples not included), but you pay at least twice as much over HID. Take the TS3000 (not state of the art, but decent and better than blurples) mentioned above, 450 watt LED light costs $520, if that is not in someone’s budget, they can get started with a 600 watt HPS kit for $159 and the 600 watt HPS will grow just as much bud as the TS3000 light.

Hmm. Yes I can get that. I was planning on a 400cfm inline fan. Would that be adequate? I’m planning to vent into an unused 2nd flue on our chimney. Another forum suggestion off ILGM for a 4x4x6.5 tent is Mars Hydro TS 3000W. shopping around shows I can stay close to my budget if I use this. I’m drowning in options. There are so many types of LED, ranges of quality and so forth not to mention opinions. What’s your opinion of their light system for this 4x4 app? It appears to have the color and power to maximize harvest quantity and potency. I’ve also read that LED can produce odd bud color.

Bottom line: what would you select for this tent size? I’m shooting for about $500 for lights.

Thanks very much for your time.

If I was buying lights for a 4x4 tent right now, I would buy 2 HLG 260 XL rspec’s. It goes over your $500 budget by $200 though ($350 each so $700 for 2). If I couldn’t buy both right now, I’d buy one and start growing/vegging and plan to have the 2nd one by flowering (a couple months).

With this, you get the best LED tech, without having to deal with the higher heat of a 630 watt CMH or 600 watt HPS, good quality components and an american company to deal with if you need customer service, parts, etc…

Or I could use two of these in my 4x4 and roughly stay in my budget

BESTVA SAMSUM Series 2000W COB LED Grow Light Full Spectrum Grow Lamp for Hydroponic Indoor Plants Veg and Flower (6 Dim Infrared Rays)

Help, I’m drowning in information!!

Yes, you could, but those aren’t latest LED tech and they’re blurple, higher end blurple but still blurple and blow hot air all around due to the older design of internal fans. A friend of mine recently picked up a spider farmer SF-4000, and she’s quite happy with it, just $100 over your budget, check that one out.

I started out with a budget 600w hps that got me by untill knew what I was doing by that time I had saved enough to upgrade both my tent to a 4x4 and my light to ts3000 I’m just about to harvest my 3rd run and start my 4 with everything I have upgraded to over the time

I still use HPS/MH now, certainly an option for anyone to get started cheaply.

Hey @Hellraiser, and whoever, for a 4x4 I’m pretty sold on the Quantum V3 550 with the LM301H led’s going for $505. Meanwhile dimmable driver. Claims it’s equivalent to 1000W HPS. It’s listed on eBay as:
QUANTUM GROW LIGHT V3 550+660nm(r spec),w/Meanwell HLG-480H,SAMSUNG LM301H, LED
being sold by HyGrow.
Any problems, suggestions, ideas about using this? I’m ready to pull the trigger. Unless…
Thanks again,

@JMN67 I use two HLG 260xl rspec for my 4x4. This was a recommendation from @dbrn32. Best investment ever. :+1::+1::+1:
