Badge for replying by email?

I noticed this badge but don’t know how it’s possible to reply to a post via email, or why doing so would merit a badge.

What am I missing?

When I first joined this forum I had inadvertently allowed notifications to the email address I used to setup the account and replied to a post that way which is how the badge is earned. I decided however that I didn’t want the email address displayed in my replies and turned off notifications. Not sure actually if anyone besides me could see my email address but thought best to err on the side of caution. I personally think of badges like smiley face stickers the teachers would put on a graded paper and not really motivated to try and catch ‘em all like Pokémon.

I have notifications enabled on several forums and find the feature quite useful.

Your reply prompted me to look at the notification email it produced and I noticed “or reply to this email to respond” next to Visit Topic for the first time. That isn’t an option on my other forums.

I took the badge to imply that it’s possible to send emails to others on the forum, which surprised me. Not to mention the mystery of how the forum software would know.

My guess is that your email address was visible only to you and perhaps a few people who have the required privileges. Hopefully, someone who knows will tell us.

Meanwhile, I’ll go back to ignoring the “reply” option. Thanks for cluing me in to what that badge means. :+1:

That is correct.
Your e mail is never shown to the public.
And all meta data is stripped from pictures displayed on the forum as well.

Thanks for the confirmation. Was speaking of my mindset when I was new to the forum and unaware of the no personal info policy, that it’s definitely enforced, how strong their security was, etc, even though I am in a legal state. I was pretty confident at this point that it was only visible to the account owner but not :100: sure.

Because of this post I had to try it. I turned on my email notifications…someone tagged me in a post with a question, I got the email with the question…replied to it…showed up as a post…I earned that badge.

I replied to a post via email out of curiosity after this thread and lo and behold I got the respond by email badge. Another badge to add to my scout sash :rofl::rofl:
