Almost ready to start my very first time! Soil question

Hi! I just got my tent all set and ready to go! My seeds were schedule to arrive today but then never came. Tracking said running late. I’m so READY to start!!

My biggest question right now is, I have a p4p box with soil and such for 1 pot. I am going to try to start 3 since I bought 3 strains. What kind of soil can I buy from menards that is safe to use?? I was looking at “container soil” which some feed plants for up to X months and I’m not sure that’s good for this??

Thanks!

Hmm menards I d go with peat moss ,perlite ,and mushroom compost to mix it yourself. You’d have to ph it lower but I wouldn’t trust any soil that’s supposed to last all summer for control reasons

Just as an aside, the “on light” on your power strip needs to be taped over! Believe it or not it can cause a problem in flower.

Oh thank you!!

Looks clean bro , that solar system , looks like a great start , carbon not needed until flower , will last longer

Also good to know! Thank you very much.

Covered the switch and the light on my heater with electric tape. Zipped myself up inside and powered off. Found a light leak at one of the vents from the velcro having a fold in it. Got that flattened out and it’s totally dark inside.

Hey @Newbs
Welcome to the forum
If you are in a place large enough for a Menards then you have someone selling Fox Farms soils.
Happy Frog is a great place to start.

I bought a vent, vent cover and 4" hole saw. I’ll be adding the duct work to the house when it stops raining so it will vent outside. Since I’m in MN, if the fan/carb is off, do I need to worry about the cold air sneaking back in? Or should I just let the carb exhaust vent into the basement where the tent is? I just REALLY don’t want my house and clothes, my husband and kids clothes to smell. I’m worried since we live in it we may not notice the smell… So outside is better right?

Do you happen to know why the ph would need to be lower? Does it mention that in the grow bible how to grow in home made soil?

If that’s your exhust it will never need to be turned off, so positive air pressure should stop air comming in.

Personally It won’t smell until the plant it’s bigger , so you have sometime to figure out what will work out for you , but once in flower carbon filter should be good enough, then it’s gonna be stinky ,New Mexico ?

This.

I don’t have Menards around here but looking on their website it seems like they carry mostly Miracle Grow and the like in terms of premixed soil. JMO but I wouldn’t try and mix my own for first time growing.

You can get fox farms on amazon.

Because it doesnt have soil to naturally buffer the water ph down

Can you zip tie your power strip up higher like on a tent support or something? Your gonna have water in the tent & you’d be safer with it off the floor & it’ll give you something else to think of for a min. er two while waiting for seeds. (don’t stand next to your mailbox all day either)

I’ll follow along here. I’m a learner too

Agree 100%
You want to minimize potential problems everywhere you can. A bag of Happy Frog can be found locally here as low as 15$ for 2 cu ft. 19$ if its not on sale. Its showing up everywhere now.
Its worth the time even if you have to drive a bit. There are a lot of fine soils and mixing up your own would be fine. But in 2 months If your plant starts showing issues it would be nice to eliminate a soil composition issue as a problem. Soils makeup are complex and each ingredient effects ph in the root zone. For instance Peat Moss will move pH toward the acidic side so it needs something that will help control that. Unless you are growing blueberries that like acidic soil.
Simply put you will have your hands full on your first grow so why complicate matters.

I only use Fox farm compost now. It’s the best in my opinion.

I didn’t realize I am limited to the times I can post or reply in 24 hours since I’m new, so I was blocked from replying until now!

@Spiney_norman thank you for the welcome and input! I didn’t realize we had stores who sold fox farms so I checked your find a dealer link and they do have locations listed! However, when I searched the store locations for the products, they do not carry any fox farms brand soils. Could be because it’s not legal in my state?? I was able to order fox farms ocean floor soil at 1.5 cu ft for $35.99 a bag on Amazon. That’s not really my end goal though for continued growing…:sob::sob:

@Audiofreak thanks for the tips. I do have my fan and carb hooked up as my exhaust so it is going to be running at all times. I did turn the entire thing on and closed up the tent and the actual tent started sucking itself in like a vacuum seal. Will I need to always leave a vent open to let air flow through? I feel like that will let light in…?

@pillsbury I am at my limit for cord length on that power strip so I might need to figure something out for getting it tied up so it isn’t at risk of water from the floor. Very good advice and thank you.
P.s. I can hear our mail man coming down our road so I wait at the window for my seeds and again I was let down today. Per tracking they arrived in my city this morning so I think I’m going to have them tomorrow!!

@AoteaGrower welcome! Have you started growing yet?
