Absolute newb - Light distance above jiffy pellet?

Hi all,

I have a really dumb question. This is my first attempt at growing, and I have a question regarding lighting above the jiffy pellet once the seed (GSCE Auto) has been planted in it. I soaked the seed for 24 hours, and it fell to the bottom of the glass. I transferred it to the jiffy pellet, but I’m a little unsure of how far above the lighting should be.

I have a generic 225LED light hanging 12 inches above the pellet. The specs for my light (from manufacturer) are:
Voltage: 85-265V
LED Qty: 225pcs
Wire Length: 125cm
Light Panel Size: 30*30cm
Material: Aluminum+Leather
Light Color: Red+Blue+Orange+White
Recommended Height: Within 3.28FT high above plants
Recommended Coverage: One panel per 21.5 to 32.3 square feet

Wavelength:
Blue: 450nm
Red: 660nm
Orange: 630nm
White: 7700K

Thanks!

I dunno much about lights outside of my own. There are plenty here that do. @dbrn32 is a lighting guru on the boards they will likely know what is what with your light. Outside of that, this thread is a master class in light management and requirements for various stages of growth.

Well , sorry to say this light will get you nowhere.
It was difficult to spot because they dont list wattage anywhere but this one picture on the side…

10 watts wont grow anything. For a seedling I would hang it 12 inches up and see what happens. But you will have to buy a real light if you intend to grow a plant to maturity.
These little low wattage panels were designed for houseplants that grow outside and get moved inside during the winter. It just barely keeps them alive till spring. Or possibly to supplement a window plant. It simply wont work for cannabis. Minimum you need a 100 watt light to grow a single plant to maturity and it needs to be a light designed for cannabis.

Thanks for the response. That really bites. I’ll look into getting a different light. But, better to find out now than later on!

And even then it will likely have super loose and airy flowers.

You might post your choices for us to chime in on. If you have a budget or an idea of how much you want to grow let us help out. We dont have any stake in lighting companies. Were all just growers like you but the community has made all the mistakes before and we can help decide the best value.
I myself started with a light like that and had to buy different ones. Its a common trap.

Dont bother with anything that doesnt use samsung LM 301b/H diodes.

I’m just wanting to grow one plant at a time. My wife isn’t very thrilled about it, so I’m gonna try to keep my budget as low as possible. Any recommendation for lowest cost for a light?

Gonna run you at least 100-150 bucks. Spiderfarmer or marshydro has decent budget lights. I grew this just recently under a marshydro ts 1000 light.

Its not a smasung diode light but it worked. The buds are a bit airyer then I like.

If you can see what i mean in this cross section photo.

Yes @Docnraq , I run Mars Hydro too. 2 TS1000 and one SP-150.
I get good results. I dont care if the bud is dense or not. Some of that is genetics. Right now side by side in my tent are 4 plants with two growing really dense fat buds and the other two growing nice full buds that wont be as heavy. I wont throw anything away as I cant tell the difference once its ground up and in the vape pen. The Samsung LM301 series diodes are more efficient and do produce better I am sure but I cant complain about Mars Hydro. In fact I even got decent plants with the Viparspectra blurples I started with.

I run a ts1000 in a 2x2 for veg and an fc3000 in a 3x3 for stretch and flower.

We all know that one day when someone develops the next generation of diodes we will all be wishing we had those instead of those lame old Samsung LM301H ones we used to think were so great.
Wasnt that long ago that Metal Halide Bulbs were the best.

I think Spiney-normam has you pretty well set. Let me know if i can help with anything.

Absolutely. Gonna snag a new light and chalk this up to one of many lessons I’ll come across with my first grow. I appreciate everyone’s help and advice!

Would this work? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09QMFRPND

This is what I would do

The one you posted is still not going to work though it is better than the 10 watt one you have.
The price only hurts for a day.
The wrong light hurts every day.

Great advice for a light on a budget!

Thank you to everyone for your help on this. I did pick up a light (SAMPHON LED) and have had it at 26 DLI. Today marks 7 days since the she first sprouted up through the dirt, and I think she’s looking happy and healthy (in my very novice opinion).
