A New(ish) Cannabinoid: THC-P

First isolated in 2019 and is more powerful than garden variety THC. I haven’t seen it discussed here so thought I’d post it.

To clarify, you cannot buy THC-P seeds. THC-P is a cannabinoid that has always been present in cannabis, but we were not aware it was there until 2019 when they found it.

They have now learned how to isolate it and put it in carts or edibles, so you can buy THC-P specific products.

Yep but in some strains it will be more prevalent as I understand it.
Seeds….
Couldn’t find anywhere what strains they found it in higher concentration or what strains they are using to make those products.
I’m sure things will come out.

Makes sense. Searching around I see THC-P infused flower sold by dispensaries, but no “High THC-P” strains that you could grow.

To date, there are no specific cannabis strains naturally rich in THCP, Cronos Group is actively involved in the synthesis of THCP (tetrahydrocannabiphorol) through an innovative partnership with Ginkgo Bioworks. Let’s explore the details:

  1. The Partnership:

    • Cronos Group, a vertically integrated cannabis company, has teamed up with Ginkgo Bioworks, a leader in synthetic biology.
    • Their goal is to produce pure cultured cannabinoids at an industrial scale using innovative methods.
  2. Why Cultured Cannabinoids?

    • The cannabis plant naturally produces hundreds of different cannabinoids, including THC and CBD.
    • However, rare cannabinoids like THCP exist only in minute quantities, making them challenging to extract and purify.
    • Cultured cannabinoids offer a more accessible and sustainable way to produce these compounds.
  3. Ginkgo’s Approach:

    • Ginkgo Bioworks focuses on building strains that produce eight target cannabinoids with high quality and purity.
    • They achieve this by transferring the DNA sequences responsible for cannabinoid production into organisms like yeast and E. coli.
    • Using their high-throughput fermentation capabilities, Ginkgo produces cultured cannabinoids identical to those extracted from the plant.
  4. Cronos’ Role:

    • Cronos Group has extensive data on cannabinoids and their properties.
    • They determine the best molecular pathways for synthesizing rare cannabinoids.
    • To scale up production, Cronos has acquired an 84,000 square foot fermentation facility in Winnipeg, Canada.
  5. Achievements:

    • Over the past two years, Ginkgo and Cronos have run 8 million tests on more than 10,000 engineered strains.
    • They’ve successfully developed strains with industry-relevant titers for multiple rare cannabinoid compounds.
    • Commercial-scale production of these rare cannabinoids is now underway.

In summary, Cronos Group’s collaboration with Ginkgo Bioworks aims to unlock the potential of THCP and other rare cannabinoids, advancing the field of cannabis research and innovation. :herb::microscope::leaves:
