Hey guys! Been reading the site for years but my first post!
I’m looking to transplant my young ladies but I’ve seen conflicting reviews here and elsewhere about how deep we can go.
I’m growing from seeds and they were pretty leggy. They’ve been healthy and i think it’s time for a bigger pot… 1.5 liters atm.
I would like to bury the stem a little deeper but again, conflicting opinions. I’ve heard to not go any lower than an inch or so from the cotyledons but have also heard it’s ok to ‘pluck’ them, or leave them and go just below the first node. The latter does sound dangerous to me but this advise was given from a local and dedicated MJ grow store.
I let them bask in the sun during the day then give them a few hours of led at night for some supplemental light.
I am sure I’ll get a few conflicting comments but honestly, any and all comments are incredibly helpful and of course welcome.
Some info, I’m growing in soil (of course), they’re about 7” atm and sprouting the 5th nodes. I’m looking to transplant to roughly 3 gal- possibly some advice there too? Also picked up a bag of Happy Frog for the new pots. I’ve read to go easy on watering for a few days, watering the edges more so than where the transplant is located.
Thanks in advance, again, for any info y’all can provide! I know these are great forums! ![]()
Bury them as deep as you would like, i would go up to first set true leaves, as I normaly do when up potting in forever home til chop day!
Photo or auto? Makes a difference. I personally would just upot to 5-10 gallon bags. If photo you shouldnt have to bury the stem. They will thicken up as they veg. If just want to do it to first node. Welcome to the forum.
Yep my bad, only grow photos here and my bad!
You are golden. Up pot them. Shock will be minimal. Dig a hole in new bag. Take the whole dirt ball and drop it in. Water. Roll on.
Well right on! Definitely a resounding ‘go for it’. Awesome guys!
Below the cots it’s pretty thin… above em is looking great. So sure, likely stop at the first leaves. Should i pluck/cut the cots or leave em do you think?
I’ve been thinking of going to the ground eventually though. That’s a factor i gotta figure out going to the next size. It’s an old garden… great soil.
And yes sr, photos. I have 5 going but omitted two for a better photo.
Seriously, thank you for the advise.
Anytime. Pluck or dont. Wont matter. If feel base is a little wesk by all means get to the firm part. Gl. Plants look healthy.
Right on man. Thank you. I’m gunna transplant tonight. A few roots are visible. The stalk is tough but about twice as thick above the cots. Atp they’re growing like weeds ![]()
I really do appreciate all the advice you guys. Definitely some peace of mind
Best policy on growing this stuff is relaxed and patient. Problems can occur fast but repair is much slower. NEVER jump to the most invasive solution first. Always the basics then move through the repairs.
What might you recommend/mean? I know it’s a pretty wide and subjective question but what would be a good ‘go to’ atm? I decided to wait until tomorrow to transplant… they’re dry and certainly must be thirsty. I was planning on a 5 gallon bucket (3 gallons of soil) but decided it might be best to go with a smaller pot for this transplant. Likely 5 gal a few weeks before they’re due to begin their flowering. I kinda get what you’re saying… any kind of shock will slow them down, likely longer than i would expect really…
Intense far red light can cause them to stretch too. If they need more light (looks like they do) and your planning to go outside anyway I would consider putting them out after they are settled in their new pots. They will need to be hardened before going out full time though. If you go with the 5 gal bucket make sure to drill plenty of drainage holes in the bottom and sides. They look pretty good other than being leggy.
They’re certainly a little leggy. Red light? They’re under a decent LED a few hours before sunrise and a few hours after sunset. I doubt the light is strong enough for em but it’s simmering before total darkness. I will be planting the stem for sure once I transfer. It’s been a bit difficult… the last 2ish weeks up here in MA has been a serious heat wave. Other than a couple storms it’s been hitting 90+ every day, easily over 100* in the Sun. I’ve been keeping them on the porch. Where they are in the photos, they get some Sun but really nice shade.
With the buckets, i was scrubbing em today and damn that’s a big container for how they are rn. I think those will be the final containers, likely not in the ground (figure it out as it goes). I’m a little ahead… got the drill and bits together planning on doing the holes but i held off. They won’t be going into the 5s yet but I’ll be ahead of it
Ignore me, some days I can’t read. Idk why I read red instead of led. Even if it is a little hot the extra sun will help combat the legginess. They are probably a little long because they think they need to get taller to outgrow whatever is shading them. I live in NM. It’s hot and dry at the same time, but my plants still prefer full sun at 95 degrees rather than the shade at 80. A 3 gal pot would be a good next step if you want to transplant a couple times.
The bigger pots. One and done. 5 gallon pot
.5 gallon soil. If nice and fluffy it will settle some. We want airy not compact.
I bury my plant’s deep never had any problems matter of fact the stalk will just catch roots and grow
@Gl1tch Nw about the typo, sh*t happens, ya know. Nonetheless the advice is incredibly helpful. I figured those temps would be wildly high. Low humidity i imagine? Not that could matter wildly either but thought I’d ask. About 60% steady here. @Storm Ill likely add a some perlite… doesn’t seem like happy frog has enough as I’d like. .5 gallons in a 5gal? Def appreciate the advice but sounds a bit low, no? Either way they’re getting thirsty daily now so i think it’s time for an up pot. I believe i might go with a 4 gal plain pot, 3 gal soil to make a future transplant easier. @Nip I’m gunna do the same. The lower stem has gotta be 3, 3.5”. Now pushing 9” overall. All rough measurements but that’s about 2” in two days. It’ll still be a little leggy but overall not too goofy. It’s a stout stem… won’t bend easily but still, quite high IMO
90’s is a little hot and 60% RH is a little low, but as long as you give them adequate water they will just slow down a little during the hottest part of the day. I would say that is preferable to not having the energy in the first place. In my grow room I keep it around 75 degrees and 65-70% RH but cannabis is tremendously resilient. The heat won’t hurt it, just slow it down while it’s hot.
92 degrees and 30% humidity and she not the prettiest but shes healthy and growing steadily. I should also add it rained a few minutes ago. Normally it’s a little hotter and drier.
Lol. “5” gallons in a 5 gallon
I always fill to the top. Will settle.
So i went ahead and did the transplants. Roots look great. I was wicked gentle and idk, they don’t seem shocked. I’m getting at least 1/4”+ a day atp. We did bury the stem a little past the clipped cots(clipped with a razor), about 4”. Proud of myself
I’ve grown before, some 20 years ago in high school, well before legalization haha. I didn’t have any of this knowledge or equipment. It didn’t turn out so good. I’m proud of this run so far. Temps have been pretty nice the last couple days, hm about 38. @Gl1tch She looks pretty good. Especially with
the heat you’re getting bud. Have you topped her?
